This deck isn't here to make friends or play 'fun' magic it is built to win in a tournament atmosphere that means low CMC and max value from every spell. This deck is tier 1, a multiple tournament champion that is streamlined and fine tuned. That being said there is always room for improvement. All questions, comments, suggestions, and upvotes are appreciated and welcome. This is a combo based reanimator deck. We aim to fill our graveyard hard and fast with the resources we need to win. By relying on our grave we make most removal less relevant and have the ability to recur and reuse almost everything. Add in a touch of removal to stop our opponents and some counterspells to keep control of game state and you have a recipe for success. So without further delay here is a quick breakdown.
The Goods: combos and synergy
Mikaeus, the Unhallowed + Triskelion = infinite damage.
Mikaeus, the Unhallowed + Glen Elendra Archmage / Puppeteer Clique + Altar of Dementia = infinite mill / Phyrexian Altar = infinite colored mana / Sadistic Hypnotist = infinite discard / Ashnod's Altar = infinite generic mana.
Archaeomancer + Living Death / Twilight's Call / Wake the Dead + Phyrexian Altar + a sizeable grave = infinite mana, ETBs, and death triggers.
Mikaeus, the Unhallowed + Necrotic Ooze + any sac outlet + Triskelion in grave = infinite damage.
Ashnod's Altar + Nim Deathmantle + Wurmcoil Engine = infinite generic mana and wurm tokens / Glen Elendra Archmage or Puppeteer Clique or Mikaeus, the Unhallowed + anything = infinite death triggers / Sower of Temptation = board wipe / Body Double as any of the above
With any of the above mentioned combos Vela the Night-Clad provides infinite life loss for everyone else.
Recursion and Reanimation, this is the heart and soul of this deck. Arguably our greatest resource here is our graveyard so we need to make sure we have constant access to everything in it. Creatures, land, artifacts, instants, sorceries: nothing in our grave should go to waste so we make sure we can get back everything we can. - Archaeomancer, Body Double,
Body Snatcher
, Necrotic Ooze, Phyrexian Reclamation, Sheoldred, Whispering One, Snapcaster Mage, Beacon of Unrest, Exhume, Nim Deathmantle, Living Death, Reanimate, Stitch Together, Twilight's Call, Victimize, Yawgmoth's Will, Buried Ruin, Academy Ruins,
Makeshift Mannequin
, Wake the Dead, Animate Dead, Dance of the Dead, Necromancy
Necrotic Ooze is a great utility piece here. With a plump graveyard he can often have fill several rolls. Valid targets from my own deck include deadeye navigatior, Glen Elendra Archmage, Sadistic Hypnotist, and Triskelion
Counter magic, every bit as good as removal if not better is counter magic. The best fix to most problems is simply to prevent them from ever happening. - Glen Elendra Archmage, Arcane Denial, Hinder, Muddle the Mixture, Spell Crumple
Enablers, these are the things that can help fill my grave with things that I want to abuse through the use of reanimation and recursion. From hand - Dimir Aqueduct, Anvil of Bogardan,
Body Snatcher
, Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur, Sadistic Hypnotist, Frantic Search, Insidious Dreams, Compulsion,
Unfulfilled Desires
From deck Dakmor Salvage, Nephalia Drownyard, Altar of Dementia, Buried Alive, Entomb, Fact or Fiction, Mesmeric Orb
Body Snatcher
with any sac outlet provides any creature from my hand or grave quickly.
Dakmor Salvage becomes particularly effective in conjunction with Anvil of Bogardan, Compulsion, and
Unfulfilled Desires
Tutors, finding exactly what you need when you need it. Tutors let you fully utilize every utility piece you have in the deck when the time is right. - Tolaria West, Rune-Scarred Demon, Demonic Tutor, Mystical Tutor, Lim-Dul's Vault, Muddle the Mixture, Sidisi, Undead Vizier, Vampiric Tutor
Deck thinning, by taking the things we don't want out of our deck and otherwise allocating cards to other zones (grave and hand) we can ensure there are more of the things we want left in the deck. -
Bad River
, Evolving Wilds, Polluted Delta, Terramorphic Expanse, Solemn Simulacrum, Buried Alive, Entomb
These lands are particularly useful with Crucible of Worlds since they then become repeatable.
Removal, as important as making sure you win is making sure your opponents don't. Good removal can be more than just getting rid of pesky creatures, it is also about limiting your opponents' resources and potential. - Bojuka Bog, Puppeteer Clique, Fleshbag Marauder, Sheoldred, Whispering One, Kederekt Leviathan, Sower of Temptation, Triskelion, Toxic Deluge, Cyclonic Rift, Reins of Power, Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur, Sadistic Hypnotist
Kederekt Leviathan can be used and abused with Animate Dead, Dance of the Dead, and Necromancy for repeatable low cost board wipes.
Sadistic Hypnotist is a great way to limit other peoples' options by severely limiting their hand. Several things can give this guy multiple targets to really tear apart hands. Reins of Power, Twilight's Call, Living Death, Victimize, Nim Deathmantle, Wurmcoil Engine, Sower of Temptation, Puppeteer Clique, Mikaeus, the Unhallowed, Glen Elendra Archmage
Card Advantage, a major part of the game here is building resources through draw power and deck manipulation. By looking at more cards we ensure that we have access to the resources and toys we want when we want them. Sensei's Divining Top, Consecrated Sphinx, Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur, Solemn Simulacrum, Arcane Denial, Frantic Search, Rhystic Study, Compulsion,
Unfulfilled Desires
, Anvil of Bogardan, Yawgmoth's Will, Fact or Fiction
"The first time I met Death was many years ago during the great war on Kamigawa when I slipped through his grasp. He left me a warning that none have ever escaped him and there was no place to hide that he could not find me for he did not sleep and would search endlessly to right this wrong. Restlessly he searches for me unable to collect the debt he is owed for I hide in the one place he does not look, within his shadow, for who would be so foolish as to tread where none are left living. He knows my voice now. Always I follow him, whispering counsel unto the immortal and it does not fall on deaf ears. Several souls he has spared, unknowingly on my behalf. As time wares on I find myself praising the thankless job he does, I offer my condolences and praise. When I am tired of living I shall step out from his shadow and greet him as an old friend fearing not what comes next because for millinea I have known Death and he has known me." -Vela, Death's Shadow
