Gather round and I shall tell thee a tale. This is a story about a man who enjoys Magic: the Gathering, but hasn’t posted anything new in ages because he’s suffering from severe ’35 expansions per year + alternate artworks + multiple card frames + foils + other random variants + crossover specials is just too freaking much and no amount of CPR can resuscitate my wallet + the fact the artwork in this game has sloughed off downhill like a landslide over the past 10 years and it looks like crap my kid draws that isn’t even good enough for the refrigerator’ syndrome.

One day the man strolled through dense Fog into Forests and Mountains underneath an idyllic Veil of Summer, delighted by the Natural State of the Wooded Foothills, and eventually wound up back at his old Stomping Grounds.

He began digging for water, but wound up finding old dinosaur fossils instead. Ah well, Life Goes On. Just then, a Lightning Bolt struck a passing group of Llanowar Elves and Elvish Mystics caught up in a joyous Cathartic Reunion, and—Boom!—instant Cathartic Pyre. The man scrounged what he could off their charred corpses in a shameful act of Faithless Looting. The dead elves were resurrected and promptly killed the man in an act of Vengeful Rebirth.

Autumn's Veil descends, and our story comes to a close.

Nothing fancy. If Fetches and Shocklands are out of your price range, try substituting things like or Game Trail, Cinder Glade or Cragcrown Pathway   instead. You’ll lose some oomph! but your wallet will thank you.

Stomping Ground and Wooded Foothills allow us to fix mana whichever way we need it, when we need it.

Basic Forests and basic Mountains round out the bulk of the split. Not too much; not too little. Juuuust right.

We have no real offense aside from randomly bolting things or pathetic ping damage from our elves. A playset of Fogs will only buy us so much time. We need to filter through our library for specific cards, and Fast.

To that end, we employ a hearty crew of shovels, augurs and drilling equipment guaranteed to have us knee deep in our library by the 3rd turn.

Faithless Looting was recently unbanned in Modern, and we won’t waste any time abusing it. It lets us draw before discarding, which is most welcome, and that Flashback will prove invaluable.

Cathartic Reunion is similar enough, and gets the job done.

Cathartic Pyre has multi functionality going for it, which is nice, but isn’t super great at either option. Still, diggers can be choosers. Pick whichever choice will help us stay in the game the longest.

Now comes the tricky part. Sifting at the stream isn’t any fun, unless you spot some tiny sparkles in the bottom of your seive. The bits of gold we’re looking for are dinosaurs! Pitch any we come across into the graveyard for later, while we wait to draw Vengeful Rebirth. Once we have it, cast it at the first available opportunity and WHAMMO! That’s an easy 12 damage right to your opponent’s face.

Lather, rinse and repeat.

•Stall for time using Fog and bolt anything that looks like it might pose a problem while you work on ramping up to an eventual .

•Dig. Dig! Dig! Dig! Use spells like Faithless Looting (hello, old friend :3) to work your way through your library to acquire Vengeful Rebirth, being sure to dump a couple Ghaltas or Thrasta’s in the process.

•Cast Vengeful Rebirth once or twice, hurling dinosaurs at your opponent and decimating their life bar.

Just a few odds and ends to help shore up the glaring deficiencies, namely graveyard removal and counter magic.

Veil of Summer and Autumn's Veil are two takes on the same problem; ye olde Counterspell and its brethren. I suppose Veil of Summer is better as the “…can’t be countered” portion is non-conditional, but I included both as isn’t exactly filled with options (and or will be most likely to cause contention to begin with).

Natural State works wonders against a number of artifact based graveyard hate cards; remove Relic of Progenitus or Tormod's Crypt etc before they pose a problem. Also hits Rest in Peace!

Life Goes On is here to help us last a bit longer against Burn or Weenie decks, perhaps just long enough to fire off our big guns.

I am aware there are cards with a higher casting cost than the two dinosaurs I included. Shadow of Mortality, Emrakul and so forth. There are two reasons why I chose the ones I did over any of these; for one thing, there are none with a cmc auto kill of 20, so either way you look at it it’ll still take a minimum of 2 Vengeful Rebirths.

Secondly, there is a slim (ok basically nonexistent, but still technically possible) chance to actually cast the dinosaurs. Both have cost reducing factors in their text, and they’re Modern legal and on color.

I will therefore not be accepting any ‘use this instead it has higher cmc’ suggestions.

”An ungodly man diggeth up evil; and in his lips there is as a burning fire.”
