So how do you actually gain advantage from a deathtouch army? You may already be familiar with the
Viridian Longbow trick; and if we're stable it's going to generate severe long term gains.
But what if we need to kill a lot of stuff right now? Allow me to re-introduce one of your least favorite cards from Theros block draft:
Lightning Volley
. Doesn't looks so bad now, huh?
Note that either of these can allow the Hornet Nest to ping itself, giving us a token without killing the thing. Value!
Wrap in Vigor serves both as a defense against enemy wipes and a badass combat trick if our opponent is actually swinging, likely killing just as much as a
Lightning Volley
when we block an alpha strike. It even lets you try for a big trigger on Hornet Nest without losing the thing!
Incite War
is the less efficient but more flexible glue that keeps this part of the deck consistent. It gets around Hexproof and Shroud like Wrap in Vigor, but like
Lightning Volley
also kills things the opponent isn't (voluntarily) attacking with. Whichever one we don't draw,
Incite War
will usually get the job done for just 1 more mana. Sadly it doesn't interact especially well with Hornet Nest like the others do, but it does take on a whole new upside in multiplayer.
Sparring Collar
is both a very nasty deterrent and allows us to go offensive.
Looming Spires
is generally going to be 3 damage or a dead creature too.
Snake Umbra
is brutal on a flying token or anything we've Equipped, but it ain't shabby just plopped on a
Deadly Recluse
either.
