There are a lot of strange things going on in this deck.

Main thing is lack of focus. A singleton approach to modern is not good - you do not have good chances to draw what you want at the right time. Also, number of copies in the deck usually indicates how good you think the card is in the deck.

Are you saying that wall of omens is a better card in the deck than restoration angel? I really have to respectfully disagree :)

Try to focus your deck on a single purpose. Have a card that just wins games together with venser. Have a way to deal with aggro that is more than relying on the god draw of rhino + venser. Focus the mana base, the creatures, make the deck not reliant on venser.

Here is my shameless self-promotion:

Azorious Acid Trip

Making Venser the crown jewel and finisher of the deck is the key to having a successful venser deck. Everything should serve Venser!

Thanks for the look through Boza. This is my best causal deck and I wanted to get some feedback to see if I could make it into modern.

The singleton approach is primarily because of two reasons a) those are the cards I own and b) I thought their bounce/appeal was good to warrant inclusion.

To be honest with you, I do think that Wall of Omens is a better card in my Venser Deck then Restoration Angel because I run 2x Sun Titan and can bring it back for free if it is killed. It is a cantrip on a wall which can help clog the field until the big boys come out. Also it is great on a Mimic Vat later in games as the opponent will allow me to drop a throwaway blocker and draw a card for 3.

Wall of Omens also plays a major part in dealing with aggro as a 0/4 wall on turn 2 stops many fast creatures.

Almost everything (with the minor exception of Mimic Vat and Leyline) interacts with Venser. Either the +2 brings value, or the -1 allows for a beatdown.

I have always wanted to get more flying and Flickerwisp would fit that and help with the exile plan. I tried the Blade Splicer route but only having one copy of her really didn't work well for me.

I will playtest your deck and see if I can exchange some ideas for some of my singletons.

Thanks again Boza

Minor update made mostly on the lack of consistency pointed out by Boza

Removed three one-ofs Geist of Saint Traft , Restoration Angel and Jace Beleren and added in three Cloudshift

The only one-of now really is Sublime Archangel and she is being kept due to the fact that the deck is heavy on the stall and I need an offensive creature. Plus she can be copied making it even better.

Yet another change thanks to Clever Impersonator .

In this deck it is a strict improvement over Phyrexian Metamorph

I love the concept behind this deck, and gave some serious thought to it. I've always been a fan of Venser, and have experimented in several different decks, trying to give him good support. I think this is a work in progress, but it is certainly a very good start. If I may make some suggestions, instead of having two Phantasmal Image's, have only one, and add a one-of of Clone. It costs a bit more mana to get out, but it doesn't have that pesky sacrifice catch. Also, buying these cards single, assuming you have none of them, leads this to cost ~$170. While any good magic deck costs around that, I think it wouldn't be that hard to find some cheaper alternatives to some of the cards. For instance, Serum Visions goes for 10 bucks a pop. I know of a a few alternatives that are only slightly worse, and will make for a deck that is ~$30 cheaper. There are quite a few of these if you search. Anyway... I enjoyed doing some research with this, and I may put together a variant of it for personal use. Thanks! [+1]

Thanks Virositae I actually own all the cards in this deck, which is why there are many singletons.

Also Virositae the Phantasmal Images get their most benifit from the ETB effect copying something on the board already. The added bonus is if they are in the graveyard for chaining Sun Titans

Put the Geist of Saint Traft back in, the Sublime Archangel has been a dead card more often then not lately.

Small update.. put Emeria Shepherd in the main deck and moved Sunblast Angel to the sideboard.

Emeria Shepherd has shone to be a game changer at late game for this deck. Even though she is a singleton, with all the card draw/scry I have I can generally get to her. I am not relying on her to win games, but she is a great draw when I have had Sun Titan or any PW countered or destroyed.

Fun list!

have you considered Spellskite for MB. Soaks up a removal meant for Sun Titan or venser spellskite with recursion is always hilarious

umlweatherman says... #15

Thanks Bababad. That is a great suggestion. I should get at least one of them to help eat removals for Sun Titan or an animated Gideon Jura. I rarely turn Gideon Jura into a creature against many decks as he just eats a removal spell.

How does this deck fare early game? (against say naya burn/jund goodstuffs/or BG vengevine)

To be honest, I dont know the whole Modern Meta. This deck mostly plays kitchen table against a variety of decks.

But taking a look at the cards in those decks I could tell you that it would be likely be poor pre-board against burn. The Lone Missionary and Wall of Omens will help stem some of the tide, maybe even Mimic Vat but the Leyline of Sanctity would be a killer in those match ups after board.

It would have some trouble with Jund unless you can stick the Stonehorn Dignitary and keep their combat off.

The BG Vengevine would be a trouble matchup because of the hand destruction. However Leyline of Sanctity would shut that off. The Stonehorn Dignitary would also help this situation.

I think if I ever brought this to a tournament I would MB Leyline of Sanctity as it would really help most matchups.

Its a remarkaly solid deck, for a non-thragtusk, non tidehollow sculler Venser deck. The spreading seas wreck Jund, and some simple replacements- Sunblast Angel and gideon jura For some Path to Exiles and its pretty much there. Perhaps some Suppression Fields and Blind Obedience and the like in the sideboard, but its pretty much all there.

Thank you lagotripha

If I ever took this to a tournament I would likely do exactly what you noted with including something like Path to Exile.

Supreme Verdict over Day of Judgment Also Celestial ColonnadeIs a must have for any control strategy. Sphinx's Revelation is typically a one of in these types of decks

Venser is my favorite "Build around me" card :p I like using Reality Acid as a one of... use that with Vensers +2 and its like ur using his ultimate... lands/creatures/artifacts and enchantments... really devestating to the opponent

That is a nice combo, I would have to think about what to take out to fit one or two in.
