Welcome to Vintage Izzet Sligh/Burn!
I brewed this deck back when I was a new vintage player and absolutely loved testing this deck! Originally, it was mono-red and it went 3-2 at the tournament. I will say that it was fun to catch people off guard by
Mental Misstep
ping in red,
Pyroblast
ing Jace, the Mindsculptor and
Dack Fayden
,
Fork
ing
Ancestral Recall
s to draw into responses, and
Fireblast
ing while tapped out for the win! My meta was mostly blue mages (Jeskai Xerox, DPS, PO Storm, Tinker, etc) with some MUD, Surival, and various Dredge and Oath decks, but it has changed quite a bit since this deck was brewed. Against any blue deck, the game plan is basically get a Pillar effect out on Turn 1 or... die. This deck does struggle against creature heavy decks like Survival, White Eldrazi, Shops, and some newer
Dreadhorde Arcanist
control builds, but thats just part of the risk for going all in. I'm open to any ideas on how to mitigate this weakness without varying too much from the burn/sligh gameplan. And "play something else" - while good advice - is not something I want to do.
The breakdown:
Pillars:
8 have bodies, 4 do not:
4x
Pyrostatic Pillar
Try this one neat trick that's guaranteed to tilt blue mages!
4x
Eidolon of the Great Revel
Hoses spellslinger decks and can swing in.
4x
Scab-Clan Berserker
Same as above, but hasty, a potentially bigger body, and the pillar effect is one-sided.
I used to run 4x
Mogg Fanatic
s, which was spicy and surprisingly effective. These little footballers kept small bodies off the board on T1, and usually beat for 2+ dmg because opponents didn't want to waste removal on it. these guys got boarded out Vs Oath and bigger creature decks. I did consider running
Vexing Devil
s here as well, but I hate to give my opponent choices. It could really help Vs Survival, Shops, and maybe dredge? IDK.
Interaction:
4x
Fork
Possibly the best card in this deck. Its pretty essential actually, and is best when used after floating RR and then saccing your lands for a
Fireblast
or
Breaking Point
. Copy your Wincon, their draw spells, or their counters.
2x
Null Rod
Helps stop opponents fast mana, can shut off Shops & PO Storm long enough to win if you're lucky.
While I do love the idea of running up to 4x
Pyroblast
main, it seems to be really hit-or-miss. These are going to land in the sideboard after some testing, but the idea of destroying a
Narset, Parter of Veils
brings me great joy. (note that this can technically target anything, but then checks if its blue before resolving)
Burn:
3x Lighting Bolt Set it on fire.
2x
Magma Spray
Low-key good. Helps get around dead draws and getting fate-sealed.
2x
Risk Factor
Testing this out as it's on-theme and instant speed. I'll trade up from a sorcery speed
Browbeat
at the cost of 1 dmg.
Wincons:
4x
Price of Progress
Most common finisher. Hits for 4 at worst, and 6-10 for a win. Most decks run a single basic while we're fetching for mostly mountains. Be sure to have a
Fork
or Pyrobalst in hand to make sure it will matter.
3x
Fireblast
Float 2 mana, sac 2 mountains, cast this on opponent's EOT, then
Fork
it to win. They will cry. You will laugh.
Restricted Singletons:
1x
Black Lotus
For turn 1 Scab-Clan beatings/taxes.
1x
Mox Ruby
&
Mox Sapphire
Free Mana.
1x
Wheel of Fortune
Red draw spell.
1x Ancestrall Recall Obvious.
1x
Time Walk
Fork it up.
1x
Brainstorm
Might delete later, IDK.
1x
Treasure Cruise
Get around our pillar effects and you'd better beleive we're fillin the bin.
1x
Gitaxian Probe
Free cantrip and information.
1x
Mental Misstep
Free counter that helps your forks and pryoblasts resolve.
Mana:
2x
Simian Spirit Guide
Very useful for landing our pillar effects on T1
1x
Strip Mine
Cracks basics and the occasional turn 1
Mishra's Workshop
.
4x
Scalding Tarn
Provides deck thinning and a shuffle effect.
3x
Bloodstained Mire
Ditto. Sweet tech.
5x
Mountain
We run
Price of Progress
and spells that require saccing mountains, remember?
2x
Volcanic Island
Get you one that can do both.
1x
Island
Just in case.
Please get at me with all of your feedback! I'm open to consider cuts/additions that would help it vs creature matchups.
Cheers and good brewing!
