This was week 3 that I tried this deck at FNM. I have had a challenge the last three weeks with not being able to get past the 2 game hump. Here's how the night played out:
Game 1- I played an intimidating first opponent who has beaten me more than one night. He played an orzhov deck full of Desecration Demon, Obzedat, Ghost Council, and kill cards. The first game was a quick and easy finish. I immediately got rid of his demon and ghost dad with Selesnya Charm to prevent them from overpowering my board. The second game was not as good. I couldn't do anything to answer his big creatures and he sideboarded in deal with the aggro. The third game was another hard-fought game and came down to a close finish. He made a play error and did not kill one of my creatures because he did not see the Ultimate Price he had in hand. I swung and ended the game the next turn and won the match 2-1.
Game 2- A match up with an opponent that I'm familiar with but hadn't played until this point. He typically plays control and I was worried. However, he decided to change it up and played a gruul aggro deck. In both games, I was able to get Voice of Resurgence out quickly and spawn tokens. He had no answer to that and I won 2-0. On a side note, he wanted to see how the deck matched up against his stronger azorious control deck. I won that match up 2-0 as well.
Game 3- Going into this game, I was more than nervous. The last two weeks, I've lost my third round and couldn't get out of the hole again. I was up against a new guy to our FNM. He played mono-red devotion with Boros Reckoner, Chandra's Phoenix, Fanatic of Mogis. I won the first game easily. He didn't many creatures out and my deck moved faster. Game two was in his favor. He got out about 6-7 creatures within a few turns using a Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx. Then he swung with everything, pumped up his Frostburn Weird (which I let through) and he took me out. He swung for 18 damage on one turn when I only had 15 life left. What killed me was that I had him down to two life. I would've pulled an Ajani, Caller of the Pride next turn and used his neg ability to kill him. Game three looked like a repeat of game two. In fact, we had spectators who left during game two and came back to an identical board in game three. In this game, he monstrositied both of his Ember Swallower in two consecutive turns and left me with one land with which I could do nothing. And so my round three curse continued with a 1-2 lose.
Game 4- I got paired up with a kid that I've played and lost to before. He also typically plays control but decided to run golgori aggro with Liliana of the Dark Realms. In both games, I moved fast, kept his creature count low, and attacked as much as I could. He used putrify on creatures during my turn when I had two Voice of Resurgence out which gave me a multitude of tokens with which to swing and defend. I won 2-0 and hoped I would actually place for the night.
Game 5- I played yet another competitor who is the bane of my existence with his mono-red burn deck. He was running a gruul aggro deck that my boyfriend said was pretty strong. I kept my own as best I could, but there's nothing I can do with two Stormbreath Dragon out. I could not do anything to exile them due to their 4/5 and pro-white. Annoying! I lost this matchup 0-2 yet again.
Overall, I did place 6th for the night. The two guys who beat me placed 2nd and 3rd. This was my highest finish. I couldn't be happier especially since my boyfriend went undefeated and placed first again with his new mono-white Modern UW Control deck which I plan to try out myself. Great showing for us this week!
