As someone else mentioned Null Brooch seems like a critical card. Odds are someone will try to kill Volrath after you pump him which likely means you have an empty hand.

Worst case, you just pitch your hand to the broach and just cycle the cards back into hand using Phyrexian Reclamation.

Since you can't run Lightning Greaves or the like you need something else to protect your volrath from being exiled by path or swords, as eventually the commander tax will put him off the table for good...

Good point The_Acid_Drip, I've run into that problem before. But luckily it's usually a destroy/-X/sac spell I run into, or I can sometimes sac him in response with Soldevi Adnate so I can reanimate him again. I've also put Tawnos's Coffin on my consideration list for exactly that reason - but I'll definitely try out Null Brooch and see if it can save Volraths ass in those situations. Thanks!

Hey Asgeren thanks for the reply. As a semi-budget player (my most expensive deck is $1500) may I offer an alternative to Tawnos's Coffin in the form of Safe Haven or Cold Storage.

They do something quite similar and are not $400 on the reserved list...

Please do, I would love to see that freezerboy :) and yeah, but as this deck tends to not have that many creatures out, it would unfortunately probably hit Volrath or key creatures most of the time - a shame because that card is indeed pure flavour!

What the fuck? Everyone is crying about the full og balthor deck but hell. I don't know how I haven't seen this, but as a similar dickhead like u (in terms of og only cards and obviously mono black forever) I have to say that this mf is a masterpiece. Keep it up!

Nice work on the deck. Was amused to see Hypnox mentioned as part of your deck's introduction. Its been a lot of years since I last saw a copy of Hypnox hit the table! Thank you for the nostalgic bump. And it always makes me happy to see Dark Ritual in a deck list. Even though its value is not that great in singleton formats, I remember games I lost or won starting with a 1st turn ritual into something unpleasant!

Been tweaking my Volrath deck quite a bit these days. Think I've successfully got something going with a discard/madness mechanic to cycle options for Volrath. Anything that your deck struggles with? People always targeting Volrath, or graveyard hate?

freezerboy - That sounds like a very cool approach! Some things have been very annoying against volrath, like counterspells , exile removal, stealing spells - but I usually only play him, when I know I can make a kill with him, which so far works well. But Null Brooch is a very nice protection piece that already have saved him or the strategy a number of times! And if I wasn't doing it old school, I would definitely include Imp's Mischief.

Good points. In testing I use his discard mechanic quite a bit, so I prob don’t have an accurate real world feel for the deck. I should prob assume he will get removed a few times, or be the target of most removal spells.
