Have you considered:

Anger of the Gods over Fiery Cannonade

or

Extraplanar Lens over Honor-Worn Shaku with snow covered mountains

gtoast99 says... #2

Yes to both. The discord debate over which creature sweeper to use was, well, fiery! We chose cannonade because it is instant speed and only one red. It deals with most dorks and problem stax creatures. Anger has the up/down side of killing godo, which can be good or bad depending on the board state. Still, there are lots of good options on sweepers, and it's splitting hairs to pick the best.

For extraplanar - losing the land generally isn't worth it. We want to win early enough the return isn't worth the risk. And we run enough utility nonbasics that it doesn't always benefit us there either. Shaku is one I was iffy on until I tried it. Its a one for 3 which isn't great. But on combo turn it will tap for 2 more (godo and helm). And every once in a while for more with Slobad or hammer for example. Don't get me wrong, it's not our strongest rock, but it's better than I expected when I tried it out.

I am a bit iffy about the extra turn cards you're running because the conditional "you lose the game" text is incredibly risky if you're against control heavy matchups and can't pull off the combo. How often do you end up using it as a finisher?

May 4, 2018 8:42 p.m.

gtoast99 says... #4

Yeah, they can be risky, and are better when played very early when resources are low and players may be tapped. Final fortune as an instant is also relevant, since it can be cast when a control player taps out on the end step before them to steal the turn order. The ability to reduce the combo cost so much, or get a second chance at a disrupted combo later in the game, can be relevant. I can understand wanting to switch them out for something like Flameshadow conjuring or Strionic resonator in your own list. These are more lines redundant to one another through hammer of nazahn, however. It's a judgement call, but I have found the fortune effects worthwhile enough to include in the main deck despite the drawback.

@gtoast99 - thanks man!couldnt do it without u guys! Again thanks for making this excellent primer for all of us!

Holy cow, your take on this is much more versatile than mine ONE TRICK PONY - Godo and a hat. You have a couple of instant-combo pieces I hadn't thought of. +1 awesome.

Thanks!! It's a group effort from the fine folks on the mono red discord server :)

Geosurge might serve you as well, pushing to 7 mana for just 4.

Untaidake, the Cloud Keeper comes in tapped, but otherwise is very nice.

Sequestered Stash/Buried Ruin in case the helm gets shot down.

May 27, 2018 9:41 a.m.

gtoast99 says... #9

Great suggestions! We've looked into some of them already.

Geosurge is great, but I don't have quite the density of red Mana to make it reliable enough. If you're running a budget list though, swapping out some of the utility lands (especially expensive ones like city of traitors) for mountains and worse Mana rocks that tap red - in that case geosurge is amazing.

The deck runs buried ruin already, along with Gamble and expo map that can find it. We passed on sequestered stash. As noted in geosurge, we can eventually run too low on red sources. I don't think I'd be comfortable pulling another mountain for stash. It was in the deck for a long time, but we pulled it for inventors' fair. Fair can get you buried ruin through expo map, so while slower it does still get there. But it's more versitile, able to grab other relevant artifacts as well (including helm on a stifled godo etb trigger). If your meta runs a higher than normal amount of artifact destruction, consider swapping stash in for something like scavenger grounds.

Untaidake almost makes the cut. If it didn't have the legendary clause, of course. If it didn't etb tapped, of course. As it is, it's slow ramp for Godo that we can't use to play our our other ramp if we need to. Close, but just a little too far off for me.

Wheel of Fortune and Memory Jar seem too broken of card draw to not be running, even if they do help your opponents

Mishra's Workshop and Helm of Awakening could both be considered for ramp. Even if helm is hard to justify.

Blazing Volley for dork filled metas

May 27, 2018 5:21 p.m.

gtoast99 says... #11

Wheel is in for sure, listed under utility spells. And it usually doesn't help oppnents nearly as much as us. Typically it disrupts those carefully crafted or mulliganed hands. All we need is Mana - I'm happy to dump rocks on to the board and wheel. Memory jar is a bit to expensive to run though. I've been considering trying out reforge the soul but I think that's too expensive too. Neither gets out of a bad mull spot like the OG wheel.

I never tried workshop in my build, but others helping to play test did. Yes, it helps ramp the rocks of course. But theres enough interaction and ritual magic that it won't help with, and it won't actually cast Godo for the win. It didn't play out as strong as you'd think. Same with metalworker, actually.

If it we're instant speed I'd run volley. There's so much competition for creature removal slots. I like the instant speed kozilek's return or the so-called pirateclasm (fiery cannonade) to get rid of a flashed in mindcensor a bit better. But yeah, meta depending I could see that.

Is there a list made up of the core build? You mentioned most godo's in cedh have a core build, I'm a little lazy and don't wanna cross check a bunch so just hoping the discord made one up. Thank you in advanced. :)

Clarifying that is the work in progress behind the scenes. Basically the bulk of the ramp and cost reducers are core to the deck. The balance of interaction (do I need burnout, or shattering spree more for my meta?) Stax (do I cut the moon effects if most of my meta is mono colored?) and some of the utility is where most of the fine tuning comes in.

Gauntlet of Might doesn't find a home in this deck, eh?

hurricane219 says... #15

Would Coalition Relic be a worthy include? You can tap it on the opponent's end step and then you'd have 2 red mana on your turn.

June 10, 2018 9:08 a.m.

gtoast99 says... #16

Coalition relic was in the list for a while, and just came it. It's always just a little awkward and slow, and was agreed that it just barely make the cut. We swapped it out after revisiting Metalworker (which I'm still not sold on), but I guess I spaced in recording that in that in the change log.

Upvoted just for the name.

Lol thanks!

Also, I missed seeing srakin's suggestion about gauntlet of might. There are too many excellent utility lands that add value to the deck, so we don't have enough mountains for it.

hurricane219 says... #19

I hate to nitpick, but could you look at the spacing in the Change Log? Some parts are kind of cramped. Them you for your amazing deck.

Thanks! Forgot my breaks there lol. Should be fixed now.

I know Ruination is on the watchlist for inclusion. What would be cut to make way for it?

Thank you for the amazing deck. I love it.

June 13, 2018 9:33 p.m.

gtoast99 says... #22

I'm glad you enjoyed it! Ruination would be a meta call, so look for one other other cards you see little use in. For exapole, if flash hulk and reanimator strategies are rare where you play, grafdigger's might be the right pull. You could consider one of the interaction slots as well. I worry about Ruination because of the number of utility land slots we use. Fork and argentum armor are also talked about as possible cuts. In fact, Fork may be cut soon for the same reason as reverberate - leaving up double red early is sometimes a challenge, even if it is a powerful effect. The replacement there will likely be Slobad, as tutoring for nature's claim seems to be more common the higher level the meta becomes.

Thank you for the great response. I must say, my Daretti deck gave his life so Godo could infinitely attack his way to victory. I was also wondering about Crucible of Worlds. Would that be an interesting include to get back some of our Sol lands?

June 14, 2018 7:29 a.m.

gtoast99 says... #24

Someone on the red discord was experimenting with crucible, top, and off color fetches. I don't think we have quite enough ways to abuse that ability to make it worth the slot though. I'll see if someone who's been using it wants to chime in here. Or feel free to join us in the Red Love discord for conversation, it's a pretty active channel.
