I'm getting back into Magic after leaving the game when Kamigawa was released. This is one of my first attempts at deck building with more recent cards. The deck revolves around Everlasting Torment. Torment gives everything wither, and I use the Soul Snuffers , Ashling the Pilgrim , and Flamekin Spitfire to distribute -1/-1 counters on my opponents' cards. The Kulrath Knight then keeps their creatures from attacking or blocking, allowing Ashling, the Extinguisher to attack unmolested, forcing my opponent to sacrifice his creatures. Necroskitter ensures that his creatures become mine once they die. The Ashenmoor Liege and Incandescent Soulstoke keep my creatures from being killed by the Soul Snuffers , and I use the Power Conduit to turn the -1/-1 counters my creatures receive into +1/+1 counters, so while my opponents' creatures are getting weaker/becoming mine, my creatures are getting stronger. Pretty much every card in the deck contributes to the combo in some way, but I haven't been able to test it very rigorously against other decks to expose any weaknesses.

The deck can, in theory, do pretty well without needing every component of the combo in play, and I really only need three lands to cast just about everything, thanks to Smokebraider . I tend to use the Flamekin Harbinger to get either the Smokebraider or a missing combo piece when I need it.

This deck is for casual play, and my group tends to average about 4-6 players per game. I'm most worried about graveyard decks and millers, which are both popular in my group's meta. The other popular build is tokens, which would make my Necroskitter pretty much worthless. Against the token decks I'll probably switch the skitters out for the Rage Forgers to add more counters to my elemental shamans and give them a little more punch on the attack.

So what does everyone think? What cards can I /should I add to combat the mill and graveyard decks, keeping in mind my theme? My budget is tight, so cheaper cards are better, but I could spring for a couple of cards that are a little more costly.

Finally found a group that plays more regularly and ran this deck through some tests. When it clicked, my opponents were left as sobbing heaps on the floor, but when it didn't, I felt it bad. Unfortunately, it only had about a 50% success rate, so I decided to make some changes.

The biggest things I lacked were card advantage and fodder creatures. Also, Smokebraider lost a lot of utility as the games progressed. I found some cards to shore up these weaknesses, and so far it's working beautifully in play test. There are still several cards I need to get copies of, so if you can help me out, check out the acquire list. I'm working on getting my binder up, so until then you can post to my wall if you are willing to trade and I can give you an idea of what I have. Mostly pre-Kamigawa block. As always, +1's are greatly appreciated!
