Why mainboard Dragon Hunter instead of Seeker of the Way or Hidden Dragonslayer for low-cost lifelink with creatures that are still aggressive? Just curious.

This deck's main downfall is a sweeper, not the lack of lifegain. I can't reliably trigger Seeker of the Way (I've tried) and Hidden Dragonslayer has a pretty weak body compared to his mana cost. His only redeeming quality is the built-in removal, but that essentially costs 6 mana and is such a slow, inneficient investment that I feel a regular kill spell would almost always be better. A 2/1 one-drop, on the other hand, lets me get in damage in the early game pretty effectively, usually at least 2-4 per 1-drop before they are able to play out a blocker. This early damage has won me more games than I could keep track of.

Your purposes for Merciless Executioner sound good but in my warrior deck. http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/29-03-15-brutal-warriors/

I prefer Self-Inflicted Wound

+1 vote....

Though I think Seeker of the Way could be replaced with Herald of Dromoka, also might want to consider a couple of Foul-Tongue Shrieks as they work well with Brutal Hordechief

Could you check out my black/white warrior deck at

Foul-Tongue Shriek doesn't do anything special with Brutal Hordechief, it's just a poor replicate of his effect that costs me a card and only happens once. If I have a dead board, it does nothing at all, not even provide a body like the hordechief does.

Herald of Dromoka is cute but underwhelming. I'm putting Seeker of the Way into my deck as a way to have a better gameplan against red aggro and other aggro decks. It works better in this deck now that I've added Secure the Wastes mainboard, but I'm still not sure if he'll stay. It's a relatively big change since I've taken out 3 1-drops and added 2 2-drops and 1 3-drop in their place.

yo phil i was thinking lately whats the game plan vs green/x megamorph or collected company? they just outvalue the 1v1 removal we have. I was thinking straight exile w/ something like ban light, but idk what else. Deathmist Raptor and Den Protector are such good synergy.

May 4, 2015 11:30 p.m.

Goody says... #11

Mardu Woe-Reaper helps against Deathmist Raptor and any creatures that Den Protector might want to bring back. Banishing Light is a bit bad against them since Dromoka's Command is usually in their decks and it can easily 2 or 3-for-1 us as a combat trick.

The game plan is about the same - attack and remove what they play. Mastery of the Unseen is a bit scary but with a fast start it won't pose a problem. Most of their other creatures are fairly slow, and Bile Blight takes care of the earlier ones.

I love the deck? do you have any updates?

Also, I saw you took out Obelisk of Urd. was it not working for you? it doesn't seem to be working in my warrior deck for sure.

What about running Spear of Heliod?

And thoughts on Stain the Mind?

Thanks a lot!

I might update the mainboard and sideboard a bit to further bolster my matchup against aggro/midrange decks, specifically mono red and gw/abzan lists. Adding another Bile Blight and/or Seeker of the Way to the 75, maybe some Radiant Purges.

I think I had obelisk in my sideboard for a while but it just never worked. I think it can work in a deck chock-full of creatures or tokens but this list is neither.

Spear of Heliod is okay in theory but the mana cost is way more restrictive than Chief of the Edge and serves a similar purpose. Attacking is your main concern, if you want a toughness boost Chief of the Scale in the sb is the better option.

Stain the Mind is not very playable. Expensive, tempo loss, and you'd rather spend one mana for a Thoughtseize to remove their card in hand than make sure they don't have access to a certain card in a future where they probabky won't need it to win because of the huge tempo loss you just gave yourself.

Check out my deck, another Warrior build. I think you would like it.

The Golden State Warriors

I would remove Thoughtseizes from yours. I would rather have a creature out.

Great build!

Congrats on another great FNM performance!

Do you have people playing tokens in your Meta? If so, Have you thought about Virulent Plague?

May 17, 2015 12:15 a.m.

Goody says... #16

I've thought about it mainly against red aggro actually. A lot of their nut hands involve Dragon Fodder or Hordeling Outburst with a Foundry Street Denizen in play. It would also work against Goblin Rabblemaster and decks like Jeskai tokens.

My meta's not full of these though, and Virulent Plague hurts my Secure the Wastes, Sorin, Solemn Visitor tokens, and Brimaz, King of Oreskos tokens (I'd rather bring him in against red aggro than Plague anyway).

I can definitely see it brought in for other lists in other metas - it really just crushes some archetypes.

logan700 says... #17

My meta is full of control. So as the deck stands I do really well. Just remove the Bile Blights and put in the other Thoughtseize and, as long as I play around the board wipes, it's not too tough of a challenge.

Against red aggro it seems to work to well if I remove the Hero's Downfall for Ultimate Price and the Valorous Stance for Brimaz, King of Oreskos.

Yeah, although I also side out Thoughtseize against red aggro and side in Surge of Righteousness

In other news Goody, I managed to pick up a Secure the Wastes Today for trade with 3 Consuming Aberrations. Lol. Now when I tap 5 mana mid-game, not only do I have 4 more Warriors for them to deal with that have possible Lifelink, unblockable except by two or more, do 4 damage combined when I swing, or are 2/1s.... I also get to blind them with the light of the sun shinning in their eyes when I reveal the card. Muhahahaha. :P

so i've been seeing a lot of white black tribal decks, and i've even built one, and am wondering how to side for the mirror match. what do all the aggro players suggest?

June 9, 2015 12:59 p.m.

Goody says... #23

I think Secure the Wastes is a big trump card in the mirror match, as well as Sorin, Solemn Visitor. Creatures that dominate the board by themselves can be effective but they can die to removal or be circumvented by going wide or via Brutal Hordechief's activated ability.

I think it's tough to win early in the mirror match as both sides can apply pressure but can also trade effectively - if a game is won early, it's because one player's cards matched up perfectly against the other player's. It's better to prepare for a mid/long game with finishers and any sort of card advantage. Athreos, God of Passage is probably a good one for this.

ok. thanks Goody i have both Secure the Wastes and good ol' sorin, but do not have an Athreos, God of Passage. i appreciate your input

Love this deck! I had a budget black/white warriors deck that worked fairly well and this is a million times better, mainly cuz this is evidently a higher value deck :p 2 things I suggest are mardu shadowspear, good any time for life burning. As well as mardu strike leader to get warrior tokens at each swing. Either way this is great and deserves my +1!
