I have toyed around with the idea of Crucible of Worlds . I'm just not sure it adds enough to my game plan to be worth a spot. I definitely don't want to lose an Ensnaring Bridge . Even though duplicates are redundant, getting one out is huge because it can totally lock an opponent down.

I thought about adding some land destruction, but instead I decided to go the Blood Moon route with the sideboard, so I probably want to stay away from adding more non-basics. Its definitely something I will continue to revisit as I start to play the deck more though.

Thanks for the ideas! Always nice to see somebody thinking along the same lines.

Well don't give up on the thought just yet then. If you're looking for consistency, what if you drop 2x Blightning, 1x Ensnaring Bridge, 2x Swamps, add the 1x Crucible of Worlds , 2x Tectonic Edge , and then 2x Dimir Machinations . Then, you can transmute the machinations to find your Ensnaring Bridge, or Crucible of Worlds, or Blightning, or Liliana. It'd offer a lot more flexibility.

i didn't want to link on somebody else's deck i thought it would be rude.

kylothian - Er, linking isn't any more rude than asking someone to visit something, I'd consider it more thoughtful so they don't have to go out of their way trying to find what you're talking about. Just don't be like some of the obnoxious "deck advertisers" on the site trying to get people to vote on their deck and I don't think anybody will care otherwise.

That's actually an interesting idea. I may test out Dimir Machinations . Thanks for the creativity!

please excuse my ignorance to the format, but this is legal in modern, and i thought modern was 8th edition onward, so how is this legal?

kmcree says... #7

swkelly89: I'm confused. This deck is Modern legal. All the cards have been printed in sets since 8th Edition. Is there a particular card you're confused about?

The Rack itself is from a set called Time Shifted. Which has several cards in original frames. There is also a modern frame printing of The Rack but doesn't look nearly as cool.

Haha I actually like the modern framed print better. But I'm slightly OCD and I hate the white borders, so that's probably why. Also, the old border printing's art looks really lame and cartoony for me.

Yea I hate the white frames, or how you're forced to buy the foil version of 8th & 9th edition cards.

Consider Blackcleave Cliffs Instead of dragonskull or crypts.

I also recommend you drop 2xBlightning , add a fourth Liliana of the Veil and add at least another 3 lands.

I'm not really a fan of Scepter of Fugue or Funeral Charm either. Scepter is slow and costs too much mana, and while the instant on Funeral Charm is appealing, most of the time it's going to be irrelevant, and its only other use is as a weak kill-spell you don't need because you already have buckets of removal.

If I were you I'd try to add as many basics as possible and experiment with a mainboard Blood Moon . Blood Moon seems too good for this deck not to try and fit it.

Nice list anyway! I'm a big fan of the discard/8rack shell. :)

I actually like the Dragonskull Summit better than Blackcleave Cliffs because the Summit almost always comes in untapped. I'm not sure if you've playtested the deck at all, but I almost never have mana problems. I know its a very low land count, but my curve tops out at 3 and the vast majority of the deck are 1 drops. The last thing I want is to get mana flooded and not have enough discard.

Funeral Charm is actually great. Having at least 1 source of instant speed discard is crucial, and the fact that I can also get a kill spell out of it is really just extra. The Scepter of Fugue I'm really just experimenting with. Haven't decided if I'll keep it or not. I would love a 4th Lili, but right now she just isn't in my budget.

I'm just playing around with Blood Moon right now. I'll test it in the sideboard and possibly mainboard it if I really like it. The problem is that against some decks it really doesn't do much, and I'm not sure I want to use a mainboard slot on something that can be very situational.

Thanks for the comment and +1!

If it's working then that's good. 19 still seems low to me though. My list runs 22 lands, I don't have to fix for two colours and I have a lower curve. Extra lands aren't really an issue because they just turn on Raven's Crime .

Blackcleave Cliffs is also just better for you than Dragonskull Summit . The top of your curve is 3 so blackcleave will always come in untapped when you need it, while if dragonskull is the only red source in your opener you may have to play it tapped. Blackcleave is only coming in tapped for you when it doesn't matter, because you already have enough lands for your curve. I honestly can't imagine dragonskull being more relevant to this list than blackcleave.

But the thing is, I'm not going to keep a hand that doesn't have a swamp or Blood Crypt in it anyway. And I don't need red really until t3. I've literally never had to play a Dragonskull Summit tapped. So unless it starts causing me problems, I'm just going to stick with what's working.

Dakmor Salvage with Raven's Crime is an amazing engine.

Awesome build. I really dig 8rack type decks. Care to offer any thoughts on Liliana's Love(ly rack)? It started out casual(all I play), but ever since I've joined this site, I've been trying to tweak my builds for competitiveness on the off chance I make it to some event in my meager free time. Thanks in advance = )

I'm not really sure about Dakmor Salvage with Blood Moon , it might not be such a great idea to keep adding non-basics. I also feel like I have enough discard without it.

why not Liliana's Caress or Megrim decks built like urs have been able to win straight up with meg and the caress by dropping a lilies caress 2 times and turn 3-4 by playing 1 blighting and a bolt to finish.

if you go off turn four Persecution (the card not this deck) wouldnt be bade either for a win con sideboard

Persecute would actually be pretty terrible in this deck. Since I only run 19 lands, by the time I get to 4 mana I've either already emptied their hand, or lost. I'm planning on trying to find room for Waste Not once it comes out, but I don't think Liliana's Caress or Megrim really measure up. I can already deal enough damage with The Rack and Shrieking Affliction , provided I'm able to empty their hand quick enough. I can't really afford to spend t2 or t3 without emptying threats. In competitive modern, if you haven't taken over the game by t4-t5, you've probably already lost.

dan8080 says... #22

I kinda dig this. I honestly don't think Waste Not has a place in 8 rack but it's interesting and gives some flexibility. But I must say the use of rix maadi dungeon palace may help me with answering my issue with dealing against Leyline of Sanctity . +1 from me. Would love input on my own Racking it up

Side note: Dakmor Salvage is a good idea. It never gets played what you do is you discard to pay ravens crimes retrace cost and then dredge 2 to draw it.

Why no Blackcleave Cliffs ?? Especially if you only have 19 lands.

kmcree says... #24

I'm hesitant to add any more non basics because it will hurt my Blood Moon shenanigans game 2. I think I'm fine with the current number of dual lands, and I currently prefer Dragonskull Summit to Blackcleave Cliffs .
