We Could Be A Beautiful Constellation on the Wall

The Purpose

I'm a big fan of the original Theros block since thats when I orginally started playing the game. The ancient Greek aesthetic, the mystical Nyx theme, the dual/mono colored pantheon, it was all great introduction to the concepts of the game, plus it was really cool. So, I come back to it every once in awhile for nostalgia, and this deck is the result of my latest nostalgia trip. Constellation was an ability introduced in this block, and had a precon intro deck made around it. I wanted to give the idea a shot myself, though I'm not bound to only using OG Theros block cards.

Card Breakdown

Aphemia, the Cacophony

  • A cheap flyer, and an enchantment that will trigger our other cards.
  • It also gives us some use from the enchantments and auras we lose along the way.
  • I've found this also pairs great with Athreos, God of Passage. Almost every creature is also an enchantment, so when it dies, Athreos gives them the ultimatum, and if even if they decide to pay the life, you get a zombie out of it.

Athreos, God of Passage

  • Yet another enchantment to trigger our constellation friends, and this one can turn into an indestructible creature at 7 devotion, which can make him a real force on the battlefield. The devotion isn't too hard to get with all the enchantments we're running, though it also means you can lose it quickly.
  • He gives us a great ultimatum for our opponents. Give us our dead creature back, or pay 3 life. Works well with Aphemia, the Cacophony because even if they decide to pay the life and kill the creature, we get to make a zombie out of it. All profit for us.

Doomwake Giant

  • Another enchantment, and this ones a real big guy sitting at 4/6.
  • This is also the first constellation creature we're seeing. With his ability, we can play a couple enchantments and wipe out any smaller creatures our opponents have. Great for dealing with token decks or just anything with a lot of small creatures.

Ethereal Armor

  • An enchantment that boosts creatures based on how many enchantments we have. How can I say no? This thing was made for constellation.

Fatal Push

  • Classic removal, nothing too special here.

Grim Guardian

  • The next constellation creature on our roster. This one drains 1 health whenever we play an enchantment. Not much, but if you get a couple of these guys out, it can add up and every little bit helps.
  • This is probably my favorite of the constellation creatures. The art, the ability, the survivability, its a good one.

Oblivion Ring

  • This is also some basic removal. Works on any permenant.
  • Why this, you may ask, and not something like Path to Exile? Well, because this is an enchantment.

Ordeal of Erebos

  • These Ordeal cards are always a safe bet. You can put them on something tough or evasive and just keep swinging. It'll get bigger and bigger and soon enough you can sack the enchantment for some great effect, in this case we can make our opponent discard a couple cards.
  • Also, another enchantment to set off our constellation creatures.

Ordeal of Heliod

  • Our other Ordeal card. This one does the same thing, but you gain 10 life instead of making your oppoent discard. Can really help keep things going long enough for you to pull a victory.
  • Also, enchantment.

Pious Wayfarer

  • This is our first and only non-enchantment permanent. Crazy. Luckily, he still has constellation and will give +1/+1 counters whenever something else hits the battlefield. Because of this he's actually a decent target for our aura's because he can give the counter to himself and be a bit bigger for a turn.

Underworld Coinsmith

  • An iconic constellation creature. A cheap 2/2 that gives you a little extra life from your enchantments.
  • You can also pay 2 to drain each opponent for 1 life, though I don't find myself using this much.

Other Decks

I’m always looking for advice and suggestions on decks. Here’s some more of mine in the Modern format if you’re down to help me out!
