EternalBrewmaster - Just wanted to tag you to see the final product. I purposefully slowed the deck down because my meta is in no way competitive. I was interested what you thought being that yours was the frame for mine. I decided to keep the Korlash, Heir to Blackblade combo, but the rest is just control through reanimation. Let me know what you think and/or any suggestions. Thanks for the inspiration man.

First of all, thanks for the credit and for putting your own unique flair into this. You have some really spicy includes and I love that you kept the GoT theme but made it your own, especially the zombie dragon and Night King references; Haakon is totally great as the NK!

One thing about my deck: I didn't mean mine was intended for cEDH at all, just that it wasn't a joke deck like most of the previous Haakon decks that just played all the shitty black knights and had no interesting intentional design about them. My deck is totally casual as there is no colorless mana ramp or rocks in it and far fewer sorcery speed tutors than a cEDH deck would have. I just meant that my deck should be able to contend in a normal multiplayer environment where people play high-level casual decks. The main element of these decks that enables that is the resilience created by the graveyard strategy. It doesn't really matter how many times they boardwipe you, you should always be able to come back.

One thing about your description: with Pack Rat in the graveyard and Necrotic Ooze in play you make copies of the ooze, not Pack rat. The ooze replaces any self-referential text in the activated abilities with its own name.

Thanks for the compliments and corrections. I have fixed them in the description. EternalBrewmaster Do you believe this deck can compete in similar metas?

Yeah definitely. Yours is less combo-oriented than mine but still really brutal in the hand-disruption area. You should consider Sadistic Hypnotist, Ill-Gotten Gains, and Dark Deal.

Holy shit, I'm not sure why Sadistic Hypnotist didn't show up in my search. That is 100 percent going in. I'll definitely consider the others too. Thanks man. EternalBrewmaster

Ill-gotten gains is a pet card of mine because like Xiahou Dun, you can get any cards back, including artifacts. It's some of the best recursion in black and simultaneously wrecks your opponents' hands too.

I can't believe a Haakon EDH will actually work. I'm impressed with the list for sure.

Thanks RedJokr. Somewhat delicate with the fact that Conspiracy and Ashes of the Fallen are required to be in play. But I haven't been this excited about a deck in a long time. Since my Rakdos the Defiler deck.

Ever thought of using Grim Discovery as another way to grab Command Beacon out of the graveyard?

NensouHiebara Thanks for the comment!

And I actually did not know that this card existed. It is definitely a maybe. The deck already does a great job of getting stuff out of my graveyard, and I have other retrieval in the forms of Ill-Gotten Gains and Xiahou Dun, the One-Eyed. However, redundancy is good in EDH. Thanks for the suggestion.

Null Profusion? Fits the discard theme, bonus whenever you use the commander's passive ability

oliveoilonyaasscureshemorrhoid thanks for the comment and suggestion. I do like the thought. I've been looking for possible other draw engines as Necropotence's discard into exile thing isn't a possibility here. Definitely a possibility. Thanks!

Difficult commander and thus very cool! Great deck!

Thank you Asgeren! I am looking into reworking this a bit. I was holding back to make it a slower deck, but I've decided that I've made it too slow. Getting the cards to get him out takes enough time. Glad you like it though!

Hey Pheardemons. I've been inspired to build a deck around Haakon, having had him as a side character in a recent black/white deck. Thank you for your deck here, it's really helping me out. How have you found your latest changes to perform in playtesting? Cheers!

FeloniousMonk Thank you for the nice words and upvote sir! One thing to be mindful is. because I don't have a lot of tutors, the deck can stall because the first couple will be to get Haakon. The problem with this is that I may not have any engines online or draw power. If you tutor for the latter, then the deck is slower because Haakon is not out. I could always add more tutor, but then it becomes the same game over and over.

I have been impressed that the deck can function fairly well without him. Sometimes I don't even try to cast him because I've controlled the board well enough. He becomes a late-game close out at that point. Like any deck, it can also stall completely but that is the nature of the game.

While if you build yours, I would recommend upping the land count by 2. I am trying to find a way to cut at least one card (since agadeem's awakening can be a land when needed) because that can be a struggle. Depending on your playgroup, I'd recommend finding a cut for Agent of Erebos, Gate to Phyrexia, and/or Tortured Existence. My playgroups have A LOT of graveyard recursion/play and artifacts are really a problem with this deck being mon-black and I have someone in my playgroup that consistently gets out God-Pharaoh's Statue and the card just hurts. Lastly, I have noticed that I sometimes truggle with discarding Haakon, so I'd recommend fitting Tortured Existence as another discard outlet, as well as graveyard recursion when needed.

Any other questions just let me know!
