My first attempt at a deck in Fate Reforged Standard, let's go!
The Creatures:
Satyr Wayfinder
- a self-explanatory card advantage engine while also filling up your graveyard for delve.
The Spells:
Bile Blight
- a stronger, but more specific
Drown in Sorrow
that deals with aggro; it can also deal with Abzan Midrange and Sultai Whip threats.
Crux of Fate
- a board wipe that can be better than
End Hostilities
if you boarded in
Silumgar, the Drifting Death
.
Dig Through Time
- a disgusting card value engine that will delve (pun intended) straight through your deck for the cards that you need. Some good cards to grab with this are your late-game planeswalkers (
Garruk, Apex Predator
and
Ugin, the Spirit Dragon
), board wipes (
Drown in Sorrow
and
Crux of Fate
), and removal (
Hero's Downfall
and
Sultai Charm
).
Disdainful Stroke
- a counterspell that stops the ever-present
Siege Rhino
and other scary spells, like
Elspeth, Sun's Champion
and
Dig Through Time
.
Hero's Downfall
- a removal spell that can deal with planeswalkers and creatures alike. Good targets for this are
Elspeth, Sun's Champion
,
Ugin, the Spirit Dragon
,
Siege Rhino
, and
Pearl Lake Ancient
.
Interpret the Signs
- a card advantage spell that has the potential to be greater than
Dig Through Time
, especially since cards like
Ugin, the Spirit Dragon
and
Garruk, Apex Predator
are in the deck.
Rakshasa's Secret
- a disruption spell that benefits us, unlike
Thoughtseize
, while also hitting more cards.
Sultai Charm
- a multifaceted spell that can do almost anything. It kills
Whip of Erebos
and
Tasigur, the Golden Fang
, but can also draw more cards!
Thoughtseize
- a standardized disruption spell that shocks you, but gives you intel on the opponent's plans.
The Walkers:
Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver
- the main win-con of this deck, unless we are facing another near-creatureless deck. Ashiok grabs any and all threats the opponent could throw at us, but the best creatures to steal are
Siege Rhino
,
Torrent Elemental
,
Hornet Queen
,
Stormbreath Dragon
, and so on... Also, Ashiok is terrible against other control decks.
Garruk, Apex Predator
- another huge threat that has many uses. The +1 that will be used most is the 3/3 beast, since we lack creatures in the mainboard.
Kiora, the Crashing Wave
- a card advantage suite that can also end the game for you, if you can get her to her ultimate.
Ugin, the Spirit Dragon
- a diverse walker that can grind away the opponent's health, single-target remove weaker creatures, wipe the board, and, basically, win you the game with his ultimate.
The Board:
Drown in Sorrow
- a smaller board wipe that you bring in against aggro. Replace one
Sultai Charm
and one
Hero's Downfall
for them.
Feed the Clan
- a lifesaver against grindy games, or the mirror. Replace two
Crux of Fate
for them, or one
Sultai Charm
and one
Crux of Fate
if not in the mirror.
Necropolis Fiend
- a beefy beater that can end games; it's functionality is similar to
Pearl Lake Ancient
for both control and aggro alike. Replace one
Crux of Fate
when against control, and replace one
Sultai Charm
otherwise.
Negate
- a counterspell perfect for stopping combos, scary artifacts, and planeswalkers. Replace one
Sultai Charm
and one
Murderous Cut
.
Pearl Lake Ancient
- another giant that can end the lengthier games. Replace
Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver
or
Sultai Charm
for it.
Pharika's Cure
- an early-game piece of removal. Use against aggro, and replace two
Hero's Downfall
,
Disdainful Stroke
, or
Sultai Charm
for them.
Silence the Believers
- a hard removal spell that can be repeated. Replace one
Sultai Charm
or
Murderous Cut
for it.
Silumgar, the Drifting Death
- a smaller
Drown in Sorrow
, but it comes with a body. When facing aggro, replace one
Sultai Charm
,
Crux of Fate
, or
Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver
for it.
Tasigur, the Golden Fang
- a huge threat that can keep the value coming. Board in against control and replace two
Crux of Fate
or one
Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver
and one
Crux of Fate
for him.
Thoughtseize
- another one, just in case. Replace
Murderous Cut
for it.
