The Next Evolution —Oct. 29, 2014

I've gone beyond the preliminary testing phases of this deck and I can honestly say that I am very happy with how fast it can be. Don't get me wrong, every now and again, I will manage to find a slow, slow hand, but it's not very often. As it stands right now, I'm looking to test this deck against some top tier decks. Cutting its teeth on some of the hardest decks to beat.

As an aggro deck, I notice that I only struggle usually on the late game. If I let the game go too long, then I struggle in maintaining my board state. Typically though, I don't have many issues with building up my initial board state. My only real issue with this deck continues to be the sideboard. Don't get me wrong, I do well enough without it, but when I need it, it always seems to fall short. I do understand that it is completely based on my meta. My sideboard does have a lot of answers, but using the one-of sideboard method does cause some issue with consistency.

I don't want to sacrifice answers for consistency. I would rather have multiple answers to multiple decks, rather than have 4 answers to the same problem. So any solid sideboarding suggestions or tips are very welcome.

Thanks for your time, and if you enjoy the deck, please upvote. May all your draws be perfect.

I think you really only need 2 Skites for this deck, besides that I dig this version.

You seem to have gone the same path as me. I was "kind of" playing it on a budget and quickly realized I wanted to invest in it and bam here we are.

@brassheart I was running only 2 Spellskite , but for some reason, I never see the things when I sideboard, so I thought since I received the 3rd one as a gift, that I'd give it a shot. I haven't had much play time with the 3rd one in yet, but I'll let you know how it handles. Yeah, it just hit me that I didn't just want to tinker with it, I wanted to actually play this deck seriously, yeah, "bam, here we are" indeed. Thanks for comment!

Just saying, for affinity you want at least one Wear / Tear and like three Ancient Grudge .
Wear / Tear - Deals with enchantments (like Stony Silence and Rest in Peace which deal with parts of your deck)
Ancient Grudge - So I heard you like winning the mirror... Also deals with stray Pithing Needle 's or Ratchet Bomb 's that may pop out of sideboards in lower tier decks, just depending who you're versing.

@ killkong1211 Those are some solid suggestions that I have been kicking around already. I've decided to just swap it out and give them a go in the sideboard to see how they do. I was in the air about Ancient Grudge be decided that the flashback on 2 of them would help me hit 4 artifacts on the mirror, which is probably more than enough to tilt the tables in my favor.

@ Lordslyver66 Thanks for noticing the reference, and I appreciate the +1.

For those following along, I have upon the numerous recommendations, decided to try out the Ancient Grudge s. I suspect that I won't find them incredibly useful except for a mirror match up. I also have decided that I want to use Mana Leak over Spell Pierce . Realistically, Spell Pierce would be more ideal for a control deck, but beyond the early game, it fizzles. I see Mana Leak making more of an impact later in a game, as well as in the early game.

I was also considering dropping one Thoughtcast in exchange for one Steelshaper's Gift . More often than not, while Thoughtcast gives me two cards for one spell, I find myself needing a specific card, and I think that's where Steelshaper's Gift would shine more. Well, that's all I have for now. Thanks to everyone for the support and the feedback.

I would play with a playset of both vault skirge and arcbound ravanger

I'd recommend a playset of Arcbound Ravager and taking out Memnite completely to make way for one more Thoughtcast and one more Galvanic Blast .

Here's my list for reference Viva La Robolution!

I run Robots and I just started playing Thoughtseize sideboard, and I love to side it in when I know decks like UWR will be siding in Stony Silence and Wear / Tear , just to deal with hate before it hits.

@LineDart That is a possibility, but I don't know if that is ideal with this deck. you say you use it in yours? How consistent has it been? Are you running that as a 4 of in the sideboard? I do like the idea, but I'm concerned it won't be as effect as I'm imagining.

@nayaftw Excellent suggestion, I think I may give that a shot over Ancient Grudge .

@Scorprix LOL, +1 for that most awesome deck list.

I don't know if you're willing to splash white, but Dispatch man, a Path to Exile with no compensation.

April 23, 2014 1:33 a.m.

TheGodofNight says... #16

@Zassalis I just ordered a playset of Dispatch to mess around with for the deck. It's a card I wanted to tinker with and was in my maybe board up until recently. I will try it out and get back to you, thank you for the suggestion.

how about Glaze Fiend ? this works well with your 0 drop artifacts.

April 23, 2014 4:05 p.m.

TheGodofNight says... #18

@avrgeboy123 I'll admit, Glaze Fiend is an interesting suggestion, and with all of the 0 CMC drops, could give me an explosive start on turn 2 or 3, although, to be perfectly honest, usually I can play my entire opening hand on turn 1; which can be incredibly hard to deal with for most other decks.

Overall, I am happy with a large portion of the deck, and I could tweak a few other things to make it perfect if I wanted to. I could add the 4th Thoughtcast , swap the Academy Ruins for a 4th Glimmervoid . I could drop the 2 Steel Overseer s for 2 Steelshaper's Gift . The beautiful thing about this deck is that my options are limitless. For now, I'm going to give the Vandalblast and the Mana Leak a little test drive. I suspect for the mirror though, that ultimately, the Vandalblast might actually be too slow. At present, I am extremely happy with the evolution of the deck this far.

Thanks to everyone for all the +1's and the helpful suggestions.

I'm not sure that Vandalblast will be too slow, you have moxes and drums, plus you can get some life back with Signal Pest , which should be a 4 of IMO.

April 24, 2014 8:27 a.m.

TheGodofNight says... #20

@ nayaftw I don't know if I would do 4 of them in the sideboard, maybe 3 tops, because then I have to sacrifice something else that I would sideboard in for another deck. Don't get me wrong, for the mirror match, Vandalblast is great, however, there are only a handful of artifacts in the deck that need to be destroyed to cripple an Affinity deck. Cranial Plating for example, if you remove that from an Affinity deck, the whole deck slows to a crawl, although, to make up for that, Arcbound Ravager with some combat tricks can still win the game, or even an Etched Champion with metalcraft. Ancient Grudge was favored because it is a 1 CMC card with flashback, also 1 CMC. I love the fact that Vandalblast is also 1 CMC, but more importantly the wording on it makes it an ideal board wipe in the mirror. My concern is that since I run less mana than a standard deck, that it might take a little but to get to a point that I have 5 mana available to overload the spell. However, if I do manage to, it would be devastating to an opponent. For now, I am playing around with Vandalblast , giving it a fair shot because I'd really like to use it.

why the hell is blood moon in your deck?

April 24, 2014 1:05 p.m.

@jcmbassist

The appropriate question would be "why isn't it in yours?"

April 24, 2014 1:08 p.m.

TheGodofNight says... #23

@ jcmbassist To be frank, Blood Moon cripples a lot of multi-colored decks. Since the majority of my deck uses colorless mana, and additionally uses artifacts to generate mana of any color, Blood Moon doesn't affect my deck, and is a great choice for crippling other decks. Although, I suppose the shorter answer would be, "Why isn't it in yours?"

@ fluffybunnypants Agreed.

I do Spell Pierce over Mana Flare .It's essentially the same except cheaper, allowing you to have mana for it after dumping what's left in your hand t2 or t3 for those not so explosive t1 hands. It also allows you to refrain from holding back with your man lands, which can mean the difference between swinging for an extra 3.
