We're Wolves - Rage Against the Dying of the Light

Commander / EDH Aggro Casual Multiplayer RG (Gruul) Tribal Werewolf

GobboE

Sideboard

This deck has been inspired by my (once standard, now modern) We're Wolves deck. I finally came around to making an EDH / Commander deck that is a tribal Werewolves deck.

Mind: this is by definition a casual deck, not only because it is a tribal, but also because I think that Ulrich of the Krallenhorde is not a competitive commander (and perhaps never can be).

If you like it: please upvote +1

Commander: Yes, with little choice if you want to create a traditional tribal, so Ulrich of the Krallenhorde   it is. His abilities are fun though: one -dayside- +4/+4 to a creature, two -nightside- an Arena ability.

So how best to exploit? Well, this deck is about kicking, hitting, and wrecking really...no time for subtleties. Instead:

Rage, Rage Against the Dying of the Light

Hah, needed to scream that at the top of my lungs: kudos if you get the reference. But yes, that's the direction of this deck. So no keeping them alive with Darksteel Plate, Basilisk Colar and stuff, no sad robots, no mana rocks, but I tried to stay as much in character as I could be.

What no mana rocks?

No, the avarage cmc is low, so I'd figure let's try without it. I did however include Scorned Villager   (tribal werewolf), Urza's Incubator to help cast Ulrich after he's died a few times, and Rhonas's Monument since it also gives +2/+2 and trample which both are very welcome. Moreover, there is room for the awesomeness of the Herald’s Horn.

Ulrich of the Krallenhorde - The Beater

Ulrich's Night ability allows you to take out creatures of your opponents. So I included some cards that can help you keep him alive like Briarpack Alpha , and Door of Destinies.

The synergy between Thriss, Nantuko Primus + Ulrich of the Krallenhorde is obvious.

Ulrich of the Krallenhorde + Ulrich's Kindred : is also a match made in heaven

Arcane Lighthouse + Ulrich of the Krallenhorde : auto include with all the hexproof flying around

Scythe of the Wretched + Ulrich of the Krallenhorde : boost plus control if the target creature is slain, say no more

Transforming

Your opponents can manipulate the transformation. So there's Immerwolf and Moonmist to help you for that critical last attack. Eternal Witness and Regrowth can get them back if need be.

Combat

You'll have wolves and werewolves: so why not Overrun, Overwhelming Stampede, and Pathbreaker Ibex? And Dolmen Gate, nice touch (flavour wise, at least I think so) and it keeps them alive.

Sideboard notes

Ancient Grudge: Flavour! Auto include if an opponent is heavy on artifacts

Belbe's Portal: Normally a staple card for tribal decks. But let's be honest: the CMC of the werewolves is not that high, so I'd only put it in here for some sort of 'flash' effect, plus I can't use it to cast Ulrich.

Coat of Arms: Leaving it out was one of the toughest calls for this deck. Its main disadvantage is that my opponents benefit from it as well...and the non transformed dayside Werewolves are also human... Moreover, since my deck also features wolves and some other critters I can't benefit enough to cope against a tribal soldier or goblin deck (and I encounter tribals regularly)

Neglected Heirloom   : Points for Flavour!! but not very good, its transformed equip cost is too high

Nim Deathmantle: can be powerful...but what bugs me is that the creature type becomes zombie...and this is a Werewolf tribal. Furthermore, the tribal boosts no longer apply
