I notice you run Mutavault and Urborg in your build, do they help you out? I'm always changing my vampire casual deck and was just curious. I'm highly interested in maybe 2 or 3 Cavern of Souls!

You ever face infect players? Just curious on your strategy against them being a vampire player too.

June 25, 2016 4:08 a.m.

I myself play infect. As an infect player, turn 2-3 wins are much less common than turn 4. Gatekeeper of Malakir is a mainboard answer to infect unless they open exceptionally well.

my local got two new infect players and my poor vampires was already having trouble with the Jund, affinity, and Aurahex player. Lol

I run Guul Draz Vampire instead of the Stromkirk Noble, nice looking 1tap creature tho!

June 25, 2016 4:49 a.m.

Learn to sideboard. Noble is the best 1 mana vampire, besides maybe Viscera Seer.

June 25, 2016 4:57 a.m.

Guul Draz is mediocre. By the time she does anything you should already be in the position of winning anyway.

June 25, 2016 4:58 a.m.

MagickedOne I don't mean to be condescending. Siding is an extremely important skill. I can help you if you need advice.

The only threat is a state champion Jund guy. Though he did get his ass handed to him by an infect deck last tournament. I'd prefer to play my vampires, but over the past year I had to build an Aurahex deck, inspired to build it because an Aurahex deck was a world champion deck last year, and I built an affinity deck just to throw off the guy's side deck lol. The guy really sides in well lol, I actually saw engineered explosives in his side deck just because I guess he thought I was gonna bring aurahex. His abrupt decay really murders my aurahex because he just kills my enchantments and hits most of my vampires with abrupt decay, terminate and the 4 lighting bolts. The first time I brought affinity the dude had a playset of Kolaghan's Command which is an easy 2 for 1 card against affinity. No clue how he knew I was gonna bring affinity since the deck wasn't used at all in months in my local.

Not sure if you played against a really good Jund player but that deck is just a monster! Most of the players don't seem nearly as hard to beat on YouTube (and I look up every Jund match I can find just to see how the deck is played by all the players) as the guy at my local. I actually hate that deck a lot now, guess others hated it too because last year we were 20 strong for modern now most months we don't even play because only like 5 show up. I still go because I'm gonna kick that dudes ass with one of my Three decks

I wanted some advice on 4 or 3 Stromkirk Captain vs. 22 or 21 lands.

Your deck is really giving me a lot to consider for my current go at a Modern Vampires. Holy pricey, though! My wife would have a brain hemorrhage if I used your blue print... However, I REALLY like it. Couple questions for you: Why only one Cavern? I'm currently stocking 4 in mine, just to ensure I have one ready at all times. Also, why not a Dreadbore in there for good measure? Thanks for your posts, and for the deck construct. Looks strong.

July 13, 2016 10:19 a.m.

Dreadbore is only sorcery speed. Honestly I'd rather just run Hero's Downfall if anything. And only 1 cavern because I also run non-creature spells. I would run 2 at most. A lot of this deck's price tag is the fact that I have rarer versions of the cards included in real life (judge promo fetches aren't at all cheap. You can also get terminates for 50 cents, mine are like 15 bucks a pop.) If you want slightly inferior artifact hate in your sideboard for a much lower price, run Ratchet Bomb instead of Engineered Explosives. Explosives have the added benefit of hitting Jund and Merfolk, hence the higher price. I might drop my Chalice of the Voids for Dragon's Claw soon honestly. The price of the deck would be much, much higher if I threw in my Kolaghan's Commands Inquisition of Kozileks, Lorwyn Thoughtseize, Ravnica Dark Confidants and the 2 Liliana of the Veil I own (I want more of her but money's tight currently, I'm moving somewhat soon. I own full sets of all the others).

Awesome response, thank you for that... If I could pick your brain some more- what are your thoughts on Bloodline Keeper in the place of Kalitas? I didn't have Bloodghast in mine at all, which I have promptly fixed, and am considering tossing my Interlopers for Lacerators, to see if I like the flow. I do really like having Tragic Slip (probably one of my favorite) in the mix as well. Hero's Downfall is a great idea for replacement, I agree that the sorcery aspect of the other is a big negative. Maybe I will sell 2 of my Caverns and buy up Blackcleave instead.

July 13, 2016 12:37 p.m.

Bloodline Keeper is unfortunately just too slow in this meta. Kalitas is one of the best creatures in modern right now due to the fact that he severely punishes chump blocking and gives you stuff just for using removals. He's insane value, in yugioh he'd be called "card advantage". Blackcleaves are great to have. The only deck I know that ever runs more than 2 caverns is Merfolk. Tragic slip is a fantastic card, but Lightning Bolt is THE best card in modern.

If you want the budget alternative to my Fulminator Mages, try out Crumble to Dust, which is still exellent vs. Tron.

Other sideboard options: Slaughter Games, Deathmark, Shatterstorm, Boil are big contenders. You could also try out Pyroclasm. A single Dismember could be useful.

If you want budget draw power mainboard your options are Asylum Visitor and Phyrexian Arena. For budget discard you'd want Duress. As a one-of planeswalker I'm not against trying out a single Ob Nixilis Reignited.

July 13, 2016 3:26 p.m.

A key strategy to this deck since I don't run Viscera Seer, is the single Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth. I can sit on my fetches and tap them for mana, to force a shuffle for nocturnus, or for when I need to flash Bloodghast back into play. Bloodghast is resilient against non-white removal, and together with Mutavault means I'm not completely screwed by Supreme Verdict.

Also, Vampire Nighthawk and Stromkirk Captain have an insane pressure game together and force stalemates like you wouldn't believe.

Gatekeeper of Malakir is imo the best vampire in the game. Walking Chainer's Edict on a 2/2 body with tribal support. With cavern he's an uncounterable removal. With Kalitas he's 3 cards for the price of one. Again, value.

Vampire Nighthawk has, to this point, been my favorite creature card of all time. The bonuses offered to it from the Nocturnus and Captain are ridiculous in the matches that I had been playing. Granted, these were by no means tournament caliber, but a group of friends, so the competitive nature of our gatherings was mild. I'm looking to start playing at the local Modern events, just to experience it, but don't really feel like getting laughed out (although that might be unavoidable considering how newbie I am to community events). In addition, Sideboarding is still very new to me, so have to also express my appreciation for your explanation of your choices. Logical and direct! Are there any replacements you would recommend for the Verdant catacombs? I just can't float that price... the Mires were easier to float under the wife radar.

July 14, 2016 10:22 a.m.

Polluted Delta is the go-to for cheaper black fetches besides Mire right now, since it was in print recently in khans and the Zendikar expeditions. I'm kinda sad I sold my set of Marsh Flats when original Zendikar was still in standard.

Oh, another side card that might be useful for ascendancy and storm is Mindbreak Trap. Other useful colorless cards are Tormod's Crypt, Relic of Progenitus, Grafdigger's Cage, Torpor Orb, Pithing Needle and Ghost Quarter.

Depending on how popular Eldrazi are near you, a powerful but expensive option is Painter's Servant.

July 14, 2016 10:49 a.m. Edited.

Two other vampires I don't run that are very powerful options are Viscera Seer and Vampire Hexmage. Also Blood Artist and Kalastria Highborn to a lesser degree. I myself like Stromkirk Condemned in the new set a lot. Falkenrath Gorger is great depending on your deck/how common Liliana is near you, and Insolent Neonate is great draw power, but I wouldn't run these two with Nocturnus. Stromkirk Noble is too good to not use.

Are the fetch lands only good for basic lands? If not, wow, those are pretty amazing for activating several benefits to cards in your deck. Bring out a mana source, bring back Bloodghast(s), increase chance of having black card to activate Nocturnus. Very powerful tool. I've been play testing this all afternoon... Fun stuff.
