Now trying to figure out if there's a way to include Legion Lieutenant without cutting gatekeeper. I've been out of the loop a while, I see Dominaria has some nice stuff so sideboard will need to be updated in time.

@Grandmaster5327 I decided to list him as "commander" years ago for visibility and now it won't let me undo that.

go in and edit it, and when you edit it, click on the box that has the added cards, and find where it says CMDR and erase it.

Hey man, I absolutely love this deck. The modern deck I'm using now is pretty similar to this, but a bit more on the spell-slinging side. However, I feel like it wants to have more creatures and grow more mid-rangey, and I'm not sure how to tune it in that direction. Would you mind taking a look and letting me know if you have any recommendations? It looks like you know what you're playing a lot better than I do.

Also; I would recommend Alpine Moon over Crumble to Dust. 1 CMC is a lot nicer than 4.

You can remove your vampire nocturnes as a commander but going to “edit deck” scroll down to the list of cards and Vampire Nocturus should have “CMDR” after it. Just delete the CMDR and it’ll stop being your commander.

@MagickedOne I've tried that, every time I go to edit ;_;

If you decide to go Marbu with Vampire Nocturnus I would recommend using a few Forerunner of the Legion to help keep black on top of your deck and get the vampires you need. And if you use them, you don't need as many of any given vampire in your deck.

Loved this deck and your love for it! I have some suggestion for cards tho, take a look!

Tried all those in the past. Too slow.

Thing I currently REALLY need to find room for is 3-4 Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord .

July 9, 2019 6:43 p.m.

Well okay, Nighthawk is an option, but, he's slower and more control-oriented than Vampire Nightpenguin, AKA Gifted Aetherborn. Dreadbore imo was always worse than Terminate, but now the game's shifting, new walkers are being printed and many are playable as basically enchants, and the meta's shifted to the point 'bore isn't trash at all.

For fitting in new Sorin, I'm pretty sure you could remove 1 Terminate and 1 Lightning Bolt for sure. Sorin can act as removal on a stick, as well as power up the tribal synergy. Plus, including the 4 copies of Fatal Push , the remaining bolt & terminate plus the four copies of the gatekeepers, you've got plenty of removal spells still.

-1 Lightning Bolt

-1 Terminate

+2 Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord

As for the other copy or two of sorin, I don't know what to remove...

How would you feel about using Knight of the Ebon Legion and/or Vampire of the Dire Moon instead Vampire Lacerator and\or Stromkirk Noble ? And what about Cordial Vampire ? We are getting lots of new options these days.

July 11, 2019 8:14 p.m.

I like Noble in this meta. He was great already but is unblockable against one of the top 3 decks in modern now.

Lacerator is kinda used for him being a 2/2, though he's god awful against burn, my worst matchup.

Vampire of the Dire Moon is legitimately an extremely tempting inclusion. Thanks for pointing out her existence as she's new. Aetherborn has an amazing body for 2 mana but I often said before he existed that if Nighthawk were a 1/2 I'd still use him. It's honestly a huge temptation to swap Lacerator for Dire Moon.

Cordial is really, really good but I'm unsure to use or not. He puts pressure on removal, and paints a huge target on his head. Something at a premium in vamps if we wanna hold a niche alongside Jund.

Ebon Legion is... ok. I like him more in EDH because I play Edgar and he's easily abused.

Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord is plain nasty. Consider the value of combining it with another new card, Cordial Vampire Sorin also combos quite nicely with Bloodghast , and can generate insane value by turn 3. Also, he shortcuts to nocturnus altogether, and is overall very mana-efficient.

Honestly, I think the biggest cut candidates are the red cards and the ones that are supported by them. I think Cordial Vampire just puts in so much work that it might just be better than Gifted Aetherborn , given some supporting changes are made. I'm thinking Legion Lieutenant for Stromkirk Captain , with some other removal spell going in for Terminate . I think for 3 mana, Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord puts in a lot more work than Gatekeeper of Malakir as a turn 3 play, because he is just about the best way to stick Nocturnus or Kalitas this early in BW. White has been known to be a great color to board with, so I think these color changes could seriously impact your game 2/3 win percentage as well.

Ironing out wrinkles now. Dropping my Nobles and Terminates makes this look less Rakdos and more Black with a Red splash. I honestly like Condemned more than Lieutenant but white gives amazing sideboard options, as another user mentioned.

My creature list looks borderline random, I know, but I'm at the point of playtesting to rearrange numbers, and every creature here has a reason for inclusion. I feel like the deck doesn't really lose much speed if any with only 1-2 Seers for t1 creatures, just gotta make your 2 drops count. I wish Anje Falkenrath were Modern legal.

K so... Aetherborn/Nighthawk feel obsolete mainboard with Sorin's first +1. He synergizes bizarrely well with Captain. So, probably Aetherborn or Nighthawk could be sided to make room for more Cordials or hand disruption.

I've been following this deck since 2014 and man, it feels weird to see this list without Stromkirk Noble. Excited to see what you eventually settle on.

August 22, 2019 10:14 p.m.

MaxwellKraft yeah, I feel like he's not even a bad card by any stretch, the deck just needed to evolve. He may or may not eventually get put back in, humans are still a solid tier 1.

August 22, 2019 11:53 p.m.

I am seriously beginning to consider returning to monoblack since almost all of the new viable vamps are very black-heavy in their cost and besides Lieutenant none are anything but black. My one reservation is... Captain is still captain. Though Cordial is very nice as a pseudo-lord if he doesn't immediately get This is Sparta'd or eat a bolt, and I really did underestimate Condemned together with ghast and visitor, the latter of which adds actual strategic value to being hellbent. And basically the entire deck benefits from new Sorin. Like mother of Alucard, this thing has so much tribal synergy it exceeds even my initial reaction upon seeing him.

Great build. Possibly the best thematic deck I’ve seen thus far on the site. A lot of care went into this, I can tell. +1

June 23, 2020 2:27 p.m.

Balaam__ Thanks! You were the 250th upvote! And a lot of care indeed. I'm still adapting to meta changes but it's been a labor of love and this was the deck that started it all for me. I mean I got into EDH and Pioneer because vampires are great in both.

June 23, 2020 2:42 p.m.

I finally got around to updating my sideboard.

Damping Sphere is for storm and tron

Nihil Spellbomb is a better Relic of Progenitus in Black. Cheap, fast grave hate.

Collective Brutality is for Death's Shadow, Burn, etc.

Liliana, the Last Hope is for tokens.

Ashiok, Dream Render is more grave hate and buys me time by locking down fetches.

Abrade is creature and artifact hate. Self-explanatory.

Dragon's Claw helps me not die to burn, and outlast them as their hand gets smaller.

Hey. Awesome deck by the way and I wanted to ask if you would have any ideas or suggestions or maybe even a rough draft of a b/w vampires list for modern.

July 17, 2020 10:46 p.m.

@Stabor depends on what white creatures you wanna use and if Nocturnus is a factor.

You COULD run 2-3 Blood Baron of Vizkopa and bank on playing him via Sorin's -3. I'm not entirely sure if any of the pure white vamps are worth running in Modern.

If you just wanna go with Legion Lieutenant, You'd build monoblack with a white splash essentially. Cavern can already make white, just follow something along the lines of my landbase here but swap the cliffs and crypts for Concealed Courtyard and Godless Shrine.

One of the benefits of running white is you have access to a ton of really fantastic sideboard options.
