I thought running a list similar to yours but I was trying out mavren fein and would bloodghast but just as affective in a w/b with vampires and I thought about split of arid mesa and bloodstained mires as my 5 through 8 fetches.

Mires yes Mesas no. They need to be able to fetch Black as it's your primary color. Verdant Catacombs, Polluted Delta, Bloodstained Mire, Marsh Flats all work here. Just pick 7-9 of any combination if you have them. If anything diversifying your fetches is techically better as game 2 Pithing Needle type sides hurt you less.

I'm interested in Mavren Fein as a one-of. In Edgar Markov EDH he's one of the best creatures in the deck.

Bloodghast is just a good card period. I've seen him as a 4-of in non-vampire decks so you KNOW he's great.

OH! I just remembered BW has one of the newer painlands cycle. Silent Clearing is emergency draw power. That's a benefit to White.

What would you recommend cutting for silent clearing? I bought two just in case lol.

@Stabor in what deck? A BW version of this? I mean you'd want 4, but if you're running only 2 then cut Castle Locthwain.

As for red card substitutes, Lieutenant over Captain is obvious, Terminate for... I want to say Anguished Unmaking but that's a bit cost-heavy. A card I just couldn't quite fit in was Kolaghan's Command, a decent swap if I were using that is Kaya's Guile.

Zealous Persecution maybe?

I might say just drop Olivia for a second Kalitas. But if you really wanted to build around Sorin's -3 then Blood Baron of Vizkopa and Champion of Dusk are both extremely strong contenders.

Sorry I didn’t clarify better but I was talking about Bw version of your deck and I play champion of dusk in my bw pioneer vampires and it has insane value tokens and lifelink. I’ve also was thinking about trying out the new card eliminate because it hits some really good planeswalkers. And where would you fit Kaya’s guile in a bw version of your deck?

July 21, 2020 10:39 a.m.

I dunno if I'd mainboard Kaya's Guile, just spitballing ideas.

My Aria of Sorrow deck on my page is more or less the standard issue Pioneer Monoblack vamps. I did have a BW version at one point.

Oh and Eliminate is good if you can't make green mana. Abrupt Decay is better and that has access to Assassin's Trophy and Maelstrom Pulse as well.

I also played bw vampires in standard and just upgraded the pieces for pioneer. I posted the list that you gave me recommendations on my page if you would like to check it out. It’s called W/b Bloodrock. I gave it the name because I’ve always enjoyed midrange builds like Jund and gb rock and I want to see vampires make a comeback like Merfolk too lol.

I just wanna point out, my Pioneer vamps are not my own creation, they're based on a well-established competitive list. Unlike in Modern where I've had to brew my own. They're like tier 1.5 or something in Pioneer and in EDH, Edgar vamps were so tryhard that the commander is banned in 1v1.

With this low curve, you can easily cut a land for another spot.

So, looking at spoilers for Zendikar Rising. There are a few vamps in the set, 2 are only viable with Sorin.

But there's a callback to Vampire Nighthawk. It's literally nighthawk but it has a Tarmogoyf effect but only for its power and only counting your opponent's graveyard. This would be absolutely fantastic in a more control-leaning vampire or just black deck in general.

Minor Sideboard update: Engineered Explosives is back in (use Ratchet Bomb if your budget's tight) due to the influx of The Underworld Cookbook food spam decks.

swapped 1 Dragon's Claw for a Crippling Fear just to have a one-sided boardwipe. I really want 2 claws but I already have Collective Brutality for burn as well, so 3 slots devoted to a matchup that used to be a nightmare but is more manageable with Aetherborn and Sorin. Hitting with a flying+lifelink 7/6 Nocturnus on turn 4 is not uncommon here. I cut Ashiok because I was already running 4 spellbombs for my graveyard hate. If I don't keep Crippling Fear, either I'd toss in a third Abrade or possibly a Kolaghan's Command or Dreadbore given the larger role of walkers in current modern. Or even my old favorite, Rakdos Charm. That card is incredible.

So, if anyone is curious to hear my thoughts on the new vampires:

Evelyn, the Covetous is interesting. Little gimmicky but has potential.

Lord Xander, the Collector is the one I really want to talk about. I'm not sure if the second effect to mill is that useful, given flashback and other such mechanics are still a thing. However, his ETB effect and his effect upon death are ludicrously good. I'm legit looking at Xander as a possible 4-of. And I wouldn't need to go Grixis as I have Cavern and Sorin. Probably would be aiming to play him off Sorin's ult. I don't think I've seen a more perfect Imperious Sorin target besides maybe Champion of Dusk.

Ob Nixilis, the Adversary is probably good enough to be a 1-of here. With Sorin and Xander he can ult on turn 4 for a cheap shot potential win.

I have opinions on Crimson vow if anyone's still unsure regarding the vamps in that set (few good rakdos 2 mana vamps, also Edgar is actually quite good, so is the newest Sorin)

I've been putting together a list of usable white vampires as well. The quick list: Adanto Vanguard, Edgar, Charmed Groom  Flip, Blood Baron of Vizkopa, Legion Lieutenant, Welcoming Vampire.

I'll look at updating side soon, I need to find a new casual Modern group but things have been dangerous here with a certain virus going around.

Ok so something I completely overlooked is that Bloodtithe Harvester is like... REALLY good. Space is tight, otherwise he'd probably be my other 4-of 2-drop. He also synergizes very, very nicely with Olivia, Crimson Bride, who is actually kinda nuts with a discard outlet like blood tokens and Sorin, especially if you're running Champion of Dusk.

I've been considering a minor white splash for a 1-of Edgar, Charmed Groom  Flip just because he's hard to kill for non-white matchups. The other half of my reasoning being white has access to some seriously fantastic sideboard options such as but not limited to Blood Baron of Vizkopa, Stony Silence and Rest in Peace.
