Intro/Summary Show
This is my paper
Maelstrom Wanderer
EDH deck, a goodstuff/combo deck built around optimising value from the cascade triggers. It can win with a few different infinite combos or simply by out valuing opponents and beating down. I have found that this gives the deck a certain inevitability, can make it hard for opponents to know what to kill with their spot removal
Every non land card is or under so that it can be cascaded into and I've tried to eliminate chances of bricking on cascade, for this reason I excluded clone effects, auras and X spells;
Vandalblast
is the only one that has a chance of not having a legal target on resolution (albeit a small one).
My group also plays a lot of Planechase EDH and we have banned infinite combos so there is also a combo-less variation of the deck.
Why Maelstrom Wanderer? Show
Primarily, I love the value. Maelstrom Wanderer brings extra stuff with him and gives everything haste. He also enables an infinite combo that allows the deck to headshot every other player at the table.
The Combo Show
This deck has several infinite combos and multiple ways to win. The combo works by assembling 1 of 2 infinite mana + card combos :
-
Food Chain
and 1 of
Eternal Scourge
,
Squee, the Immortal
or
Misthollow Griffin
which generates infinite mana that can be used to repeatedly cast
Maelstrom Wanderer
and therefore the rest of the non-land cards in the deck.
-
Palinchron
+ Card: zendikar resurgent which creates infinite mana and draws the entire deck.
Then, the entire deck being either in play or in hand with access to infinite mana enables several infinite combos revolving around
Deadeye Navigator
, the simplest being the combo with
Inferno Titan
to infinitely headshot the rest of the table. But there are alternatives if either has been exiled; for example, if
Inferno Titan
ate a
Swords to Plowshares
earlier in the game infinitely bouncing
Venser, Shaper Savant
can return all of the opponents permanents to hand. If
Deadeye Navigator
has been exiled then it is also possible to use
Crystal Shard
to bounce
Eternal Witness
back to hand to continuously re-buy
Time Warp
and take infinite turns.
Nexus of Fate
can also be used to generate infinite turns.
Deadeye Navigator + Peregrine Drake
also gives you infinite mana but without the card draw.
The combo pieces are also not dead cards on their own, the food chain creatures, although possessing unimpressive stats, can be persistent and hard to get rid of. Cascading into
Food Chain
with no combo pieces can often enable casting
Maelstrom Wanderer
multiple times in the same turn . I am considering
Paradox Engine
to turn this into a psuedo-infinite mana combo with any signet.
Top Deck Manipulation Show
Few more notable cards:
Non- Mana Artifact Suite Show
Bribery
- hilarious in metas you are familiar with, but also fun when casting blind, as it's usually pretty obvious which opponent has big creatures in their deck. A lot of big eldrazi in my usual groups, so the haste from
Maelstrom Wanderer
can be fun with annihilator or
Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger
, but also works just fine if just cast for its mana cost on turns 3 - 5.
Garruk, Primal Hunter
- is usually just a draw 7 if I cascade into it, but if I think it can survive until my next turn or if I cascaded into an extra turn card I will generally plus it first.
Cards Maelstrom Wanderer doesn't like Show
These are a few cards that I have encountered that can really ruin
Maelstrom Wanderer
's day:
Combos:
Food Chain + Misthollow Griffin
/Eternal Scourge + Food Chain
= infinite mana, and 99% time means I can win then and there
The
Food Chain
combo lets you play out your whole deck and win if opponents can't respond (casting spells hit with cascade is optional so you don't have to worry about
All Is Dust
fucking you over), but
Food Chain
can work nicely on its own with
Maelstrom Wanderer
too as a way of returning him to command zone. This makes multiple casts a turn not only possible but quite easy, especially if you hit expendable creatures that can help contribute to making the mana necessary. The goal in this situation is to dig for either Card: Misthollow Griffin or
Eternal Scourge
and win that way.
Palinchron
needs no introduction - combos with
Deadeye Navigator
to give you infinite mana, or with
Zendikar Resurgent
to give you infinite mana and the ability to draw your entire deck and therefore win with one of the Deadeye combos.
Deadeye Navigator + Peregrine Drake
also gives you infinite mana.
What can you do with infinite mana?
You use it to infinitely blink an
Inferno Titan
and headshot everybody or
Venser, Shaper Savant
and bounce all opponents' permanents.
Deadeye Navigator + Eternal Witness
+
Time Warp
= infinite turns, if you have the mana.
Deadeye Navigator
+ a lot of things is just amazing -
Venser, Shaper Savant
and/or
Glen Elendra Archmage
is just broken, even without the infinite mana combo.
Only real nonbo is Spelljack + Surrak Dragonclaw
- this hasn't happened to me yet but cascading into Surrak before Spelljack wouldn't be ideal.
==Spoiler: Deck Variations
I've also designed the deck to be able to go back to its good stuff value town roots and go combo-less, by taking out the
Food Chain
combo pieces:
Eternal Scourge
,
Squee, the Immortal
Misthollow Griffin
,
Palinchron
and
Peregrine Drake
with:
Shardless Agent
and
Bloodbraid Elf
for cascade-y flavour;
Etali, Primal Storm
(which might make the main deck soon too - way too much fun)
