Ban Update 9/24/24 Show

Hello and welcome my helium huffin' friends to the one and only Jolly Balloon Man freak show! Forget the boring old Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker and Zealous Conscripts combos and give this deck a try if you're looking for a strong, but original and fun token damage based brew. This Circus art themed extravaganza of a deck aims to ramp fast and exploit token creation creatures for direct lethal damage to our opponents for the victory. We achieve these goals by making use of new spells such as Agate Instigator and EDH staples such as Impact Tremors. We ensure we can keep copying our token creators and filling up our balloon animal tokens by untapping our jovial Commander or copying his abilities with classics such as Illusionist's Bracers and Magewright's Stone. Our balloons can get popping fast folks, especially due to our maniacal Commander, The Jolly Balloon Manaltered, having haste and being only a low three mana cost. This means we can often start creating numerous tokens early game and hitting our opponents for multiple direct damage triggers each turn. This can get out of hand fast, so much so that although I am still not able to get this card in paper for two more days, my online playgroup is already sick of me. Our deck runs a large amount of artifact ramp heavy hitters to help us cast our high mana token creator powerhouses, as well as a few fun damage inducing spells such as Prisoner's Dilemma for more entertaining gameplay purposes. Unlike most decks I build, Whippits has a much higher mana curve, the idea being that our high power 6-7 cost spells in the deck are indeed worth it for their abilities to end games on cast combined with a Jolly Balloon Man copy or two. We are also running a solid amount of legendary creatures in the deck, instead of focusing on nonlegendary creatures we can copy with Jolly Balloon Man. All these legendary creatures abilities are strong enough in our deck that we don’t need to copy them and we also have Cadric, Soul Kindler just in case. Being a brand new card from an upcoming set, this deck is a new brew with only a few games now under its belt, so am looking forward to everyone's inputs and comments on this one. There's a lot of cards such as Marvin, Murderous Mimic that I would like to get in for a try, so I expect there to be many updates over the next few weeks as I am able to run the deck more. The maybeboard listed will also continue to grow, as well as be soon updated to include descriptions of why I have chosen not to include those cards in the deck at this time. So, without further adieu, ladies and gentleman, boys and girls, children of all ages, grab your whip cream cans and sit back and enjoy the one and only greatest Jolly Balloon Man Show on earth.

This section deals with all of our doubling trigger ability spells. Our deck focuses on creatures that either ETB or die for token creation triggers or ETB or attack for direct damage triggers. We’ll use all these cards to multiply their effects as well as our Commander Jolly Balloon Man’s balloon token copy ability.

Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines Let’s go ahead and double all of our permanents ETB triggers with our favorite Phyrexian matriarch. Although we are playing Elesh for her first ability, don’t sleep on how strong it is to shut down all of our opponents ETB triggers as well.

Illusionist's Bracers The best activated ability copying equipment out there (sorry Battlemage's Bracers). Equip to our Jolly Balloon Man for 3 mana and watch us make x2 balloon animal tokens with no Anointed Procession in sight. A great Enlightened Tutor target.

Panharmonicon The EDH classic artifact staple itself. Let's now double every single of one our creatures ETB abilities.

Card draw and tutoring is an important part of every Commander deck, ours being no exception. We need to be moving through our deck in order to find our main damage dealing and token creation creatures and these cards all assist us in that quest.

Caretaker's Talent Fantastic new one from Bloomburrow, this enchantment is an absolute powerhouse in our Circus. With this adorable bunny, bat, rat trio on the field we now draw a card each time we create a token (only once per turn sadly) and for just one more mana can bump it up to level 2 and create another token of one of our other balloon tokens and initiate another creature ETB or death trigger. The final level 3 gives all our tokens +2/+2, which is always welcome to help us get life totals low for our direct damage ETB triggers. These new Bloomburrow class enchantments have been great all around the board.

Enduring Innocencefoil Sweet, sweet little Bo Peep. These new glimmers are all the talk of Duskmourn and for good reason. We're a bit sad it only triggers once per turn like Caretaker's Talent, but we'll take what extra creature ETB based card draw we can. Our naive little lamb also has the added benefit of returning to the battlefield as a harder to remove enchantment when led to slaughter.

Enlightened Tutor I hate to reveal our tutor choices, but we don’t have many other mana friendly options in Boros. Some of our top tutor targets are Illusionist's Bracers, Magewright's Stone and Panharmonicon. Take your individual circumstances into account each game, as we also have plenty of other tasty artifact and enchantment cards to grab if we so please or need to answer a specific threat.

Esper Sentinel We like creatures that we can make horrific balloon animal art out of. Esper Sentinel fits the bill as everyone's favorite, re-occuring card draw trigger one drop.

Idol of Oblivion The token card draw baddie, Oblivion itself. We create a lot of tokens and we draw a lot of cards if Idol is on the battlefield. Don't think I've ever needed to make the Eldrazi for 8 mana, but hey options are options. No brainer include.

Imperial Recruiter and Recruiter of the Guard Our respective red and white recruiters grab us our most needed power 2 or less creatures and puts them into our hand. Can also make a balloon copy to search again same turn if needed. These are clutch for getting us our lower mana cost damage dealing creatures such as Agate Instigator into hand to start our damage rolling.

Skullclamp Make our 1/1 balloon animals and equip Skullclamp to ice them for a repeatable, 1 mana equip cost, 2 card draw. A new good twisted skullclamp clown looking art, I'll take it Warhammer 40K.

Trouble in Pairs Let's give this troublesome duo some props right off the bat because extra turn spells (and blue decks playing them) are one of the worst things in Magic and Pairs first ability puts an abrupt end to all that silliness. The reason we are playing Trouble in Pairs though is because it's the best white card draw piece since Esper Sentinel, arguably better. Every game our opponents are usually casting at least 2 spells each turn, not to mention often drawing a second card and possibly even foolishly attacking us as well. Getting this out early game whenever we have the 4 mana available can easily net us 3 cards each time around the table. An incredible new addition for mono white draw.

Our main wincons in the deck are the following direct damage "flame swallower" and "human cannon" trigger cards. We want to be hitting opponents with flying balloon token combat damage each turn and then using these spells to get their life totals below zero. Combined with our fearless Jolly Ballon Man and our many token creation creatures, these damage triggers can get lethal fast.

Angrath's Marauders and Fiendish Duofoil Angrath’s doubles all damage sources we control deal, while Fiendish Duo deals all damage any source deals to opponents. Copy them once or twice to copy that double dealing damage again. Two of our best options for hitting for massive damage. Don’t forget to be swinging with all our red creatures as all combat damage is doubled as well.

Agate Instigator Lizard me timbers, this is a great new one. This new Bloomburrow mechanic offspring means that for an additional 2 mana we can make an additional 1/1 mini Instigator (or more with Anointed Procession) for multiple 1 direct damage to opponent creature ETB triggers.

Brash Taunter I told this tik tokin goblin no flash photography three times now, but we'll let him stay for his powerful damage dealing ability and indestructible ways. A great combat damage deterrence blocker when on the battlefield from any high P/T non-flying creatures and his fight any target creature ability for 3 mana means we don't always need to wait to block. When Brash Taunter really gets good in our deck though is when we are able to make a few copies of him and then drop in Blasphemous Act for some show ending damage. Gets em' every time.

Court of Embereth We make a lot of creature tokens and thus often have a board packed full with creatures. Let’s take extra advantage of this by hitting all our opponents for direct damage equal to our number of creatures on our upkeep with Court of Embereth. We’ll also take another card draw (or more) by becoming Monarch.

Fanatic of Mogis Although this fanatical minotaur can sit around in hand too long when we don't have many red permanents in play, the strength of his ETB red devotion damage trigger and ability to copy it with Jolly is too good to not include. Bide your time and be patient when drawing Fanatic, as this is a card that can end games when the proper situations present themselves.

Impact Tremors Doesn't get much better than Impact Kevin Bacon. There's a reason this is in every single red color identity token EDH deck out there. We'll follow the world's suite and use Impact Tremors to keep nailing our opponents with damage to the face every time we cast a creature or create a balloon token.

Knight Paladin Thank you space marines for this new heavy hitting combat vehicle. A 6/6 crew 1 trample shouldn’t be laughed at, but we’re more interested in hitting everyone for 4 damage on ETB or double with Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines or Panharmonicon. Keep copying with Jolly to end games fast.

Molten Gatekeeper MH3 common for the win baby. We keep the 1 direct damage ETB creatures coming with Molten and have the added benefit of being able to unearth him for a turn when he's in the graveyard for just one red mana. A good one to keep an eye on as reanimating him for a single turn can be the last touch we need for lethal on a low life foe.

Ojer Axonil, Deepest Might   We are often able to end games with all our token creation paired with re-occuring damage spells like Impact Tremor (SLD) that deal just 1 damage on ETBs. Let’s end games even faster by having all of our ETB damage creature spells hit for Ojer’s power of 4 (or more if buffed) instead.

Overlord of the Boilerbilges We’re going to try and skip this one’s suspend cost, but it is a nice option if we get stuck with it in a lower ramp opening hand. Otherwise, a card couldn’t fit our deck better. We get a huge 4 direct damage to any target not only on ETB, but on attack as well. Hello Jolly. Ya’ll know what to do.

Prisoner's Dilemma Talk about an entertaining, damage hitting force of a card. Even if everyone picks silence, that’s 4 damage (or more if we have any doublers out on the battlefield) our enemies are taking that we can flashback again for 7 mana to repeat again. This card gets really fun though as our opponents decide to get clever and one or more decide to pick snitch. A great politics piece that helps us get life totals low.

Purphoros, God of the Forge Are we starting to get the theme here? Now when our creatures and balloon tokens enter, we hit all of our opponents for 2 direct damage instead. As powerful as Purphoros is, he is not a good copy target for Jolly, as Purphoros is one of our few legendary creatures in the deck we do not get a benefit from dying when the legendary rule triggers. Still well worth the include for the large amounts of damage we can crank out with our immortal blacksmith in play.

Solphim, Mayhem Dominus Similair to Angrath's Marauders, this red Phyrexian abomination doubles all damage sources we control to our opponents, although this time non-combat damage only. Has the added benefit of being able to grant indestructible to in a pinch by discarding two cards and paying the mana / Phyrexian mana life cost.

Sunspine Lynx Lifegain tutor decks running Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose, Exquisite Blood, Sanguine Blood and now Enduring Tenacity are a major pain in the ass. Don't even get me started on Aetherflux Reservoir. Let's put an end to all of that nonsense with Sunspine Lynx. Oh yeah, now all of our direct damage spells can't be "prevented" as well, go right ahead and cast that Comeuppance why don't you? Players in Commander also have a nasty habit of playing lots of nonbasic lands, so Lynx gets a resounding 3 out of 3 for awesome abilities we are going to take advantage of. Similar to Fanatic of Mogis, our fiery backboned feline can end games fast when copied by Jolly multiple times a turn.

Torbran, Thane of Red Fell We don’t need to copy Torbran (legendary rule) to take advantage of him making Molten Gatekeeper or our other 1 damage pingers all hit for 3 damage instead. Don’t forget it’s a +2 damage for ANY red source, so this includes combat damage from any of our red boys or balloon tokens.

Warleader's Call As much of a travesty as Murders of Karlov Manor was, it did give us a Boros Impact Tremors, be still my red and white loving heart. Costs us 3 mana compared to Tremor's 2, but we get the added benefit of buffing all of our creatures +1/+1.

Witty Roastmaster Just like our other performers, a great Jolly Balloon Man copy target with a 1 direct damage creature ETB trigger.

Make sure to check out our token filled gift shop before you leave, these decks sure don't pay much, that's for sure. We're going to utilize the following token creation and token doubling ability cards to pump out as many twisted balloon animal copies as possible each turn.

Ancient Gold Dragon Our first high 7 mana cost token creation behemoth of a card. With a little luck on the dice roll we can create up to 20 1/1 blue faeire dragon tokens each swing. Remember this is dice roll based, not combat damage based like Ancient Copper Dragon so all of our 1/1 balloon animal copies can net us just as many tokens on a roll.

Anointed Procession It took a way too expensive Secret Lair Commander deck to finally give us some new Anointed Procession art options. I've leaned towards our cuddly kitty cats, but feel free to slot the stick fetchin' dogs in (Anointed Procession) if you prefer man's best friend in your deck. Who's a good boy?!? With Procession in play we now make two tokens instead of one every time we activate Jolly or get a Smothering Tithe trigger. We'll take it

Battle Angels of Tyr A few special ability card draw, life gain, treasure creation chances combined with, you guessed it, more tokens (thanks myriad) and thus more direct damage ETB triggers. Always great to have a flying blocker or two up the sleeve as well.

Boss's Chauffeur Our main goal with our tokens is just to create as many as possible, so Boss’s Chauffeur is a great (lower for this effect) 5 mana cost addition. Each one of our balloon animal copies enter with counters equal to 1 + the other amount of creatures we have and when they die at our endstep we create that many 1/1 citizen tokens. Another one we can create a huge amount of tokens and initiate our direct damage dealers with each turn.

Cadric, Soul Kindler In this first brew, I’ve gone away from including the likes of Mirror Box, but now that I have gone the route of including many more legendary creatures that may soon change. Currently, we just don’t have room for any added synergies regarding the “legendary rule”, but Cadric is our one current exception because he is just so good. The very first game I played with this token version of the deck, I drew 4 lands, Cadric and 2 ramp artifacts. Not a ton going on. I played Cadric turn 3, and by this time had drawn Fiendish Duofoil and Purphoros, God of the Forge. I copied Duo next two turns after I cast him with Jolly and then with a single cast of Myr Battlesphere and a swing at one opponent the game was over. Cadric is not the main reason we are running so many legendary creatures we can’t keep on copy, but he is a nice bonus to be able to get around the legendary rule. This holds true not only with Jolly’s balloon animal copies, but also with Cadric’s own pay 1 to create a token of any legendary creature that ETB’s under our own control ability.

Hero of Bladehold A great balloon animal copiable nonlegendary token creator classic. We’re pumping out at least two attacking soldier tokens a turn when we swing and most importantly buffing all our other attacking creatures with a +1/+0 (or more when our copies swing) until end of turn.

Liberated Livestock Another great one for creating multiple tokens each turn. As our balloon animal tokens are sacrificed at the end of our turn, every time we have a copy of our newly independent bovine led trio on the battlefield we are creating a minimum of three tokens per turn.

Mondrak, Glory Dominusfoil Everyone's favorite new Phyrexian horror, Mondrak, like Anointed Procession above doubles all of our token creation triggers. We can also make him indestructible by paying 3 mana or 1 mana and 4 life and sacrificing two other artifacts or creatures. Another great use for our balloon animal tokens before they are sacrificed at the end of our turn.

Myr Battlesphere Myr Battlesphere can do some cool stuff. The coolest thing it does for us though is merely create 4 tokens on ETB. Copy with our Jolly Commander per usual for even more.

Ocelot Pride There’s no better way to start creating a lot of tokens FAST and early game to boot with Pride’s low one mana cost. Run that expensive extended art and have it really look like we have a lion like creature on a stand ready for some tricks.

Ojer Taq, Deepest Foundation   I'll list Ojer's downsides first, he's a high 6 mana cost. That's about it. We make a lot of balloon animal tokens if we want to win and with Ojer on the battlefield we now make THREE balloon tokens instead of one. Don't get me started on what happens if we have Anointed Procession and Mondrak, Glory Dominusfoil out as well. A quick way to end games with a few of our direct damage ETB creatures in play.

Precursor Golem and Siege-Gang Commander Two more great multiple token producing creatures we will exploit with our balloon animal copies to enable our direct damage triggers.

Tempt with Vengeance *f-etch* I moved away from all other token creation sorceries and instances to focus on creatures we can copy with Jolly, but this is the one I elected to keep. It’s just a one red mana in addition to the X cost, so we can pour whatever mana we have into it to create as many tokens as possible. This card is most fun though because often our opponents are either too stubborn or just foolish to realize the implications of their choices on this one when we have even a single damage ETB creature in play on the battlefield and often spell their own doom without even realizing it.

Threefold Thunderhulk A lovely suggestion from TitanWalls to the initial version of this deck that got the wheels turning and started to lead me into changing this deck into more of a heavily focused creature token creation theme. As with our other monstrous token creators, get a damage ETB creature on the battlefield combined with Jolly and go to town on our enemies life totals.

Wurmcoil Enginefoil One of the most fun creature cards to transform into balloon animal form in our deck. Besides the power of just having a regular Wurmcoil Engine on the battlefield, when our balloon token version dies at end of turn, we get to keep the 3/3 lifelink and 3/3 deathtouch wurm tokens it creates as well. A great token creation option to get our direct damage ETB creature spells hitting hard.

Taking home too many ramp souvenirs from the show can sometimes be difficult in Boros, but we'll use the following cards to do our best to keep the kids happy. We are running a lot of heavy colorless producing artifacts in order to ensure we have the mana we need to cast our most powerful high mana cost token creation creatures like Threefold Thunderhulk with a single mana to spare to copy them with Jolly Balloon Man.

Arcane Signet, Boros Signet, Mana Crypt, Mana Vault, Sol Ring and Thran Dynamo Our EDH ramp staples. It was hard for me to take out this beautiful circus fitting Dr. Who bowtie Talisman of Conviction for Mana Vault, but Vault is worth it every time if you're trying to win. Slot Talisman right back in if you don't want to dole out the extra cash and like losing (it's really not that bad). As mentioned above, we run both Mana Vault and Thran Dynamo to help out our higher mana curve.

Ashnod's Altar All of our balloon animal masterpieces are sacrificed at end of turn. Let's instead sacrifice every one of them after we swing for combat damage on our second main phase and create 2 colorless mana each time we do so. Another great Enlightened Tutor target.

Cursed Mirror We’re taking advantage of all the sensible mana rocks we can with our higher curve, so why not add in a three drop that will produce us mana each turn and possibly even with a little luck turn into an Ulamog, the Defiler on ETB for a turn? Especially effective under our control to copy a damage doubler like Fiendish Duofoil before we create the rest of our tokens for the turn.

Dockside Extortionist From one of the best cards in our deck to one of our best Jolly Balloon Man copy targets in the deck. Wait for our opponents to greedily fill their board with artifacts and enchantments and then cast our beloved goblin pirate (who's now a monkey somehow? I don't love it, but it's for the circus theme) for as many audience treasure tips as possible. Creating 20+ treasures a turn with a Commander untap or two has been more than satisfying so far.

Jeska's Will Great opening hand keep for obvious reasons. It's great with Jolly on the battlefield to be able to use both abilities, but don't be shy to use this early game when opponents hands are full in order to get off to a fast, powerful balloon filled start.

Smothering Tithe You just can't go wrong with collecting treasures in between every act. We run multiple token doubling spells such as Anointed Procession, so everyone's favorite taxation is even better than usual in our deck.

Solemn Simulacrum I opted to move away from creatures like Knight of the White Orchid and Loyal Warhound for ramp in favor of artifact and enchantment staples, but our stern robot with his ramp ETB and card draw death trigger are too good for our deck to miss out on. Whenever we make a balloon copy we get the basic land on the battlefield and when the token (or plural) die at the end of our turn we get the card draw trigger. Our one other creature ramp option besides Dockside Extortionist.

Throne of Eldraine I haven't been playing enough as of late to notice if everyone has caught on yet how incredible Throne of Eldraine is in mono or dual color identity decks. For a net loss of just one single colorless mana (if activated on the same turn as cast) Throne is an incredible source of 4 mana for us each turn that we can use to cast our higher cost red damage doubling spells and creatures. Don't snooze on paying just 3 mana to draw 2 cards each turn either instead if needed. Be sure to pick red when this enters, as we don’t have many comparative high mana cost white spells in the deck.

Removal or in our circus themed world "ejection" (read the terms of services on your tickets their folks) is a crucial part of any Commander deck. This time we are running almost none of it, as we’ve decided to load up on our ramp, token creators, and damage increasing cards instead. Remember, this deck is all about getting a damage trigger card or two onto the battlefield with Jolly Balloon Man, saving up a good chunk of mana and then dropping in high mana cost creatures and copying them for huge amounts of damage in a single turn. This sadly means making the sacrifice in the removal department in order to focus on these goals, aiming to not give our enemies many chances to remove us instead.

Blasphemous Act 99% of the time, this devilish act is wiping the board for just one red mana when we need it most. Add in Brash Taunter before we do so and hit an opponent of our choosing with 13 direct damage as well.

Farewellfoil Exile it all. ALL OF IT. Alright, keep your pesky lands, I guess. One of the best battlefield and graveyard cleansing spells in years and after Covid we all know how important disinfectant and hand sanitizer are. Our answer when a total battlefield reset is the only way out.

Skyclave Apparition Don't be like me and get excited when you draw Skyclave and forget that our spectral friend only can hit targets with mana cost 4 or less. None the less, Skyclave Apparition is an excellent include for permanent removal and another great Jolly Balloon Man copy target in the deck.

White Sun's Twilight Have I said that we like creating tokens yet? Why not wipe the board at the same time whenever we can afford the X cost of 5 or more.

Untapping our maniacal Jolly Balloon Man is an important part of our strategy to ensure we can make more than one balloon animal token per turn. In the end I strayed away from going with an all in untap synergy route with the deck, passing on the likes of Manifold Key and Thornbite Staff, but we are still including a significant amount of untap options for our good-humored clown Commander to utilize.

Magewright's Stone and Patriar's Seal Our two main artifact untap spells. Shoutout to Patriar's Seal for being an excellent new creature untap option that was not on my radar until I started building this one. Don't forget many turns it is better to hold up the 1 mana to untap these and copy a powerful creature that is already on the battlefield for a second time or third time, as opposed to using all your mana on a new creature whose ETB will only trigger once that turn.

Village Bell-Ringer Even without Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker in the deck, our more handsome Quasimodo is great to untap Jolly Balloon Man on its original ETB and then to continue to copy as many times we can per turn to keep untapping Jolly and activating direct damage ETB creature triggers each time.

We run almost every Boros color identity land that comes in untapped we can. Check out the decklist for the full list of bond, dual, fetch, filter, flip, shock and surveil lands we run. Listed below are our few other special ability lands.

Exotic Orchard Besides that this one HAD to go in for our colorful circus theme with this wild Secret Lair art, we can usually count on at least one opponent having some red or white mana producing lands.

Homeward Path There was a time I had moved away from playing Homeward Path, and there was also a time I was foolish. Any Commander centric deck such as ours where we are at a total loss without our Commander, Path is well worth the slot in.

Minas Tirith and War Roomfoil Extra card draw opportunities tied to lands are great to have as backup options. We swing with a lot of creatures and can usually manage to get Minas Tirith coming in untapped with the decent amount of legendaries we run. We also only have to pay 2 life with the additional 3 mana to activate War Room’s draw ability with our Boros color identity.

Strip Minefoil and Wasteland Land destruction is an absolute must in any EDH deck. The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale exists people, not to mention Gaea's Cradle or now it's even worth it for a Three Tree City. We'll play both Strip Mine and Wasteland to protect us from hard to remove land based threats.

Urza's Saga Grab our Mana Crypt, Mana Vault, Sol Ring or Skullclamp.

Basic Tents

We run x8 basic Mountains and x7 basic Plains in the deck. I've chosen the full art ones from Wilds of Eldraine as I feel they fit our circus flavor quite nice.

All great things must come to an end and our entertainment for the evening is coming to a close. As I mentioned in the deck introduction, I've played less than 10 games with this deck, so it will continue to be updated quite frequently over the next few weeks as I get the chance to playtest it more. All comments / suggestions are more than welcome. Hope you enjoyed the ride and get home safe! Ignore the clown with the shiny little canisters in the back seat, he won't hurt you...Please throw a Whippet my way with an upvote if you enjoyed the show. Until next time.
