So pretty much copied this deck with very minor changes, (Minor changes because didn't have some cards that i could trade for yet) and played my friend with his white/green wennie deck. Pretty much full of Voice of Resurgence , Fleecemane Lion and worm tokens. Talks all kinds of crap cause he has a pretty good win record. First turn pantheon. Second turn land and another pantheon with familiar. Third turn land and path of bravery and then forth turn nykthos and archangel of thune. He never had a chance. Just the look and his face was worth all the effort getting this deck online.

How do you play against a top end Gruul deck?
December 11, 2013 2:59 a.m.
Monoxidechild says... #6
@SpankiusMonkius Defensive until I get some good enchant stacking going on then I get aggressive as hell. I have an amazing record against Gruul, I don't think I've ever lost a round to Gruul to be honest.

Took a very similar deck to this to FNM tonight (i run an extra Celestial Flare , 22 land and no Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx ) Had an absolute shocking night just hit the worse draws ever unfortunately then got mana flooded or starved a few times as well. I completely love this deck and playing casually with my friends it usually train wrecks except vs my friends mono black deck running a ton of removal and a couple Erebos, God of the Dead although it lasts alot longer than my Gruul Deck vs it. Any tips you could provide for me in dealing with Erebos, God of the Dead and the removal and in general maybe?

Also forgot to mention i run 1 less Ajani, Caller of the Pride and main board Elspeth, Sun's Champion and no Gideon, Champion of Justice in the main or side board. From the post above and whats mentioned here are the only differences

Have you thought about the Hopeful Eidolon
and Ethereal Armor
combo?? A turn 2 7/7 first strike lifelink is devastating.

FalconZzz I'm glad you like the build, sadly there isn't much you can do to deal with Erebos, God of the Dead and he is a direct thorn in this builds side. My fun solution has been Soul Tithe ; plop that bad boy on their and now your opponent is either mana screwed and not dropping that t5 Merchant, or their god is gone. Mono black is a bad matchup for us in general though.
Rocknj06 I like the combo for what it is, but it's very fragile seeing as even enchant destruction can kill a Hopeful Eidolon . I regularly face a white wenies deck at my local FNM and game two his biggest issue with me is Sundering Growth .

Just letting you know, in the description you said Path of Bravery triggers Archangel of Thune multiple times. It doesn't. All the life is gained at once, and archangel triggers once. An easy way to confirm this is to look at the third ruling on it's gatherer page.

Sorry, forgot to clarify. Check Path of Bravery 's gatherer page, not Archangel of Thune .

Declare attackers; Path of Bravery triggers, spreading a slue of counters.
Implying that if I control, say, 5 creatures (4 creatures and an Angel), a slue will be passed out onto my board; five +1/+1 counters, one on each creature. I'm sorry that it wasn't specific enough, I suppose some people may read it and not understand how the interaction progresses and in turn will make misplays.

Oh, re-reading that now it makes alot of sense. In either case, I just wasn't sure if you knew or not. I just don't want anyone to make misplays :)

I see you getting really good scores on FNM and stuff. Can you describe how the meta looks like at your place? And the second thing. How do you handle with Mono B or B/x decks, where a single Erebos pretty much destroys your gameplan? You have little ways to handle him, only Soul Tithe which does not seem to be that effective.

Mono Black sets a tempo wanting to drop Gray merchant bombs on turn 4-5 with a 5/7 swing from Erebos next. Soul Tithe breaks that beat, now they decide to either keep my health from increasing, or dropping their Merchant. Does this have holes in it? Yes. No strat is perfect and no deck is unbeatable. Also don't forget the Celestial Flare , you'd be surprised how often this ends up removing gods.
Last Friday I faced;
- 2-0 Mono green ramp
- 2-1 Selesnya Aggro
- 2-0 America Control
Second place was MUD if I remember correctly.

Hey, how well your deck handles BW Humans? i have been trying this deck with a minor tweak or two, and it works great against control. Green Devotion just cant keep up! However, I ran into a match with a BW Human, and boy I sucked at it! Especifically the Xathrid human and Obzedat!

You might want to add Glare of Heresy in the sideboard for matchups with any white permanents. At it's worst it's a 2-mana white Doom Blade .

I used to run Boros Elite over Soldier of the Pantheon but the protection is just too good to pas up not to mention the life gain for Angel triggers.
Daring Skyjek is something I've contemplated, just haven't been able to find the right place for him.

Could you help me out? I've been playtesting this deck on cockatrice, and im having trouble knowing what to take out for sideboard cards. Could you tell me what i should put in for what, and what i should take out? I know you've said what to put in for matchups, but what do i pull out? (if that makes sense :O)

Very nice deck +1, I am experimenting with different white concept, however i usually strungling with playing against monoblack discard/sacrifice using first round Thoughtseize continuing with removals and discards (rats for example) together with Mutavault it really troubles me as he usually gains card advantage ( Read the Bones What is your response for these types of decks?

So I was playing this deck today against Black devotion, I lost 3 games straight against those damn rats that duplicate themselves. How would you counter that?

Okay sorry I've been off the page for so long, work has had my focus tied up so I've been unable to respond. I'll have them up soon.

I have a feeling I'm assembling a deck that closely resembles your original deck idea. Take a look at my Rule #2: Double Tap (Turn 3 win) deck. It is a fantastic working deck, quick AF.
