Who Let the Dogs Out? (Xenagos EDH)

Commander / EDH Budget Casual RG (Gruul) Werewolf

Dark_Matonic

I am obligated to do this given my decks name:

Welcome to the deck that references possibly the worst period for pop culture: The early 2000's

All unwanted nostalgia aside, this deck is a result of my hype after seeing a werewolf ledgendary, then quickly realizing it was terrible as a commander in every way possible. No direct synerigies, not even good on it's own, I knew it would never work. Luckily, before I died of shock, I saw a red and green card sticking out the top of my old Theros collection. By pure chance, "Who Let the Dogs Out" started playing on my radio as I walked over to that pile, finding my old friend Xenagos, God of Revels. After throwing together some cards from Innistrad and my new ones from Shadows, this deck was born.

A few notes before I begin:

  • Like any person living in the 21st century, I don't have many funds
  • If you like playing blue in any way, shape or form, you will hate this deck
  • Suggestions and upvotes are always welcome, so please enjoy.
Most of the early game for this deck is getting out small creatures to ward off attackers and creating a small but powerfull boardstate.
In my experience, most of the mid-game is used to either push aggression or set up for the late game.

If your board is ahead and you want to push in extra damage:

If your board is behind and you need to play conservatively:

Finally, after getting through thick and thin the late game has arrived. In my opinion, using whatever you have left over from the early/mid game is enough to kill someone with the help of these cards.

Buffing your creatures:

Creating more creatures:

More mana:

  • Savage Ventmaw can bring out almost any card in your hand after attacking.
  • Zendikar Resurgent gives you extra mana and can draw any last cards you need to win the game.
Altough there is plenty of land in this deck, mana consumption is on par with that of a werewolf, the hunger never ends. To sate this hunger I have added a mix of mana dorks and classic ramp spells which usually get the job done.
The removal in this deck goes along with the flavor, kill anything that isn't living or isn't yours.
Finally, everyone's favorite portion, tribal elements. Why not turn your ruthless killing machines into even better ruthless killing machines?
  • Moonmist and Waxing Moon can turn the tide of games, both flipping and powering your werewolves.

  • Immerwolf and Geier Reach Bandit   help with transforming your humans.
  • Mayor of Avabruck   acts both as a lord while providing an army.
  • Full Moon's Rise and Howlpack Resurgence buff your werewolves whenever you want.
  • Instigator Gang   helps you beat the living hell out of your opponents.
  • Ulrich's Kindred protects your attackers.
  • Wolfbriar Elemental can create tons of wolves if you have the mana.
  • Obelisk of Urd and Door of Destinies are good all-around tribal buffs.

  • I did some more digging and removed/added some cards:
  • Took out Hanweir Watchkeep  /Added Courser of Kruphix. Hanweir was too slow.

  • Took out Seasons Past/Added Nissa, Vital Force. Seasons Past was honestly just filler till I could find something better, Nissa helps with aggression.
  • Took out Gaea's Revenge/Added Archetype of Aggression. Gaea was too slow and I needed more trample enablers.
  • Took out Hinterland Logger/Added Eldritch Evolution. Evolution helps me replace any dead cards on the board.
  • Not only have I had a blast playing this deck, but building it as well. For a Gruul deck, there are seemingly limitless synergies, everyday I find more and more cards that I could add. If you have any interest in werewolves I'm sure you will love this deck. If you have any suggestions or reccomendations, I would love to hear your feedback.

    Thanks for looking!
