That's brilliant! As a dedicated Meren player, I approve wholeheartedly. My only note would be on Gray Merchant. I personally prefer Kokusho the Evening Star. There is little setup required to get the full effect and he swings for five in the air. However, gary does scale with your board and he costs one less mana. I also sacrifice utility for more mana dorks but I think I like your choice of ramp better.

Well thank you very much sir! That means a lot. Also in regards to Kokusho I would agree that he is really nice and I will say that if I had a little bit more room in the budget I'd have him in as well. I normally like having both in my less budget friendly deck of Meren in case someone gets rid of one of them. And yeah I like to have utility because if someone builds this deck I want them to be able to have the ability to fight against any deck that comes there way. Hey man, this is a great deck and a great help for me. I’ve got the Meren pre-con from anthology and I’ve been wanting to tweak her to make her competitive in our casual group, but she’s been on the back burner due to other budgets for decks. But with this, you’ve given me some great ideas of how I can start fitting her into the budget as well, so thanks for this!

I hate to tell you but your deck is currently $150.81, meaning you need a 150+ deck : P Nice build though, I'm looking into making a Gitrog Monster deck as the obviously superior Golgari commander.

My deck is actually sitting at $145.86 according to TCGPlayer. You should never trust the bottom price on this site as it never accurately reflects the real price of the deck. It gives a ballpark figure and always assumes, unless stated otherwise, that the cards are in NM condition. But I appreciate you commenting since I didn't notice that Birthing Pod had gone up a few dollars since last I saw it. And as for your last comment, I think Meren is the better Commander in my experience at least, but to each their own haha.

Also I should say that, that $145 price is without me doing some finagling to get the price down. I was able to get it to $138 after doing said finagling. But I will certainly consider replacing Pod as since it is creeping up and I would hate for the price to go up more.

I just recently added Sylvan Awakening to my Meren deck. It's such a beautiful card when you have nothing else to do and plenty of lands to waste.

I don't think I see your point. Yes I can swing out with them, but that taps my mana. Yes I can sacrifice them, but then I am just losing lands at that point, which, as I said I am not fond of.

Llanowar Elves, arbor elf, birds of paradise, elvish mystic? Any mana ramp?

I currently have six Mana accelerants in the form of Sakura-Tribe Elder , Golgari Signet, Kodama's Reach, Cultivate, Explosive Vegetation, Sol Ring. I normally don't use creature ramp like that. But I do have ramp. I might put more ramp in like a Solemn but we will see.

Out of curiosity, have you considered Hythonia the Cruel as a repeatable field wipe vs token decks or other mass creature strategies? She is a little slow, but she has a large body and an excellent ability.

Creakwood Liege is a power buffer and utility creature that nets you additional sacrifice targets, I run him in my budget Meren build as well.

By the way, Meren is way better than Gitrog. :p How do you feel about Muldrotha, the Gravetide? I've been seriously considering porting my meren deck into Muldrotha. She seems incredible. Though a more expensive mana base is sure to follow...

Hey there! Thank you for commenting and upvoting the deck! Hythonia seems to expensive for my taste mana wise for just a board wipe like that.

Also I actually used to run Creakwood Liege in the deck but never felt like I was getting much use out of them. But it has been a while so I will start testing with them again.

Thankfully someone agrees with me about Meren!

I have seriously looked at Muldrotha and to be quite frank: she is incredible in so many ways. But I really like what I have going on here so for now I will keep Meren as the helms-woman of this deck for a few reasons, not the least of which is the mana base concern haha

Lastly I did not realize that Intent had dropped that much in price! I knew about the reprint but not how cheap it was. I will have to seriously think about dropping Birthing Pod now because I love Intent and Pod is becoming too expensive anyways like I mentioned in a previous comment. Thanks again for taking the time to comment and upvote the deck!!!

I really need to update the digital version of Meren to match my deck irl...I'm terrible about making changes to my paper decks and not updating them here. Which is really bad when i want comments to tune them. :p

Diabolic Intent is an incredible card in my list, I see you also run Altar of Dementia. This is one of my favorite cards to run...I also thoroughly enjoy it in conjunction with Nighthowler to mill out my opponents super quickly. Combos well with Jarad as well. Also you can bestow Nighthowler on Meren to push through some commander damage post board wipe. Have you used Nighthowler in the past?

Altar is pretty dope. Also yes I have. To be honest I hated having him in the deck. It makes sense to have him in a dedicated Mill deck but for me and how I run Meren I never cared for it.
