Who Said Rakdos Can't Support

Commander / EDH

Wanted to make a support deck because my other EDH is Dimir control/mill/discard and gets me a lot of hate. However, I didn't want just any old support deck I wanted to use arguably the dumbest color identity possible to do so. Thus, I have birthed this deck the Rakdos helper and I am pretty proud at how successful it is as a helper without relying heavily on artifacts as I had initially expected would be necessary.

Flavor:

  • The flavor of the deck is built around its color identity. A deck that should most certainly be hosted by a cruel foe actually lending a helping hand to flip the game on its head. As is the case with most helpers, its is centered primarily around abusing cards, that in most cases either shouldn't be in the format or shouldn't be used in tandem, in unintended ways to support your "opponents".

Commander:

  • Dragonlord Holaghan - is the primary choice. He fits the flavor of the deck perfectly. Hes last ability is effectively null and void in most cases considering the one-of nature of the EDH format. He provides utility in order to make quicker use of the other creatures in the deck so that your "opponents" wont have to wait for that helping hand.

  • Tsabo Tavoc - is the backup commander. She is there just to check other commanders. Some commanders can cripple and, in some cases, entirely nullify a decks efforts to help (e.g. Maralen of the Mornsong).

SHOW STOPPERS

Sorcery:

  • Head Games - has the perfect flavor for the deck as it provides a support mechanic that is unique to its color identity and as a result of an abuse of intended use.

  • Twilight's Call - counter target Wrath of God

  • Exhume - a bit more fair and balanced than the other multiplayer graveyard recursion as it helps equally (assuming it is cast when each player has legal targets in his or her graveyard) and doesn't innately lend itself more to the heavy aggro decks in the same way as the mass multiplayer graveyard recursion.

Instant:

  • Darkness - did you forget about the black Fog?

  • Insidious Dreams - tutor up you best support cards for any given scenario at instant speed. Also allows for a discard outlet for creatures you intend to reanimate perhaps with very spell(s) you just tutored for.

  • Misinformation - reads "as Misinformation is being cast each player with value cards in his or her graveyard will engage in politics to receive the resulting recursion."

Creature:

  • Abyssal Persecutor - nuff said

  • Aku Djinn - I don't see how this could have had any other intended purpose. It was meant for a support deck i am sure of it.

  • Bazaar Trader - I found that red, though sparse in quantity, has some of the most helpful cards. Bazaar Trader is great because it serves as the poster-creature of the deck in being insanely helpful but, also offers defensive utility in trading away permanents that can be harmful to the controller (e.g. Aku Djinn and Abyssal Persecutor). This mechanic is obviously saved for rare occasions in which an opponent may be targeting you.

  • Boldwyr Heavyweights - Blightsteels and Eldrazis inbound.

  • Hunted Horror - a 2 drop body that provides help for target "opponent" isn't a bad deal.

  • Humble Defector - great for causing mass political debate and bargaining for control and will often be passed back to you.

  • Soldevi Sentry - draw factor is the cocaine of EDH/MtG in general and you are the dealer. You've never seen your "opponents" want you to attack them so much.

  • Underworld Cerberus - mass multiplayer reanimation on a stick.

  • Witch Engine - pass the mana dork

Enchantment:

  • Bludgeon Brawl - what other chance does one have to make use of a card like this.

  • Guild Feud - will insight politics upon your upkeep and give a boat load of value to either you or your "opponents" and ideally both.

  • Mana Cache - pass around the the leftovers

  • Mana Flare - very inexpensive way to provide everyone with ample mana.

  • Wild Evocation - another somewhat chaotic form of support that can accelerate games very quickly.

Artifact:

  • Anvil of Bogardan - I know for one of the most helpful cards in the deck to be an artifact may at first appear as a bit of a crutch for the color identity and flavor of the deck but, I consider this to be one of the strongest helper cards among any of the color identities it is just that good. It's one card that no one is ever sad to see at any stage of the game. It has great utility at all stages. I mean... Who doesn't like draw and no max hand size?

  • Lifeline - much like the Anvil of Bogardan this card is self explanatory. Keep peoples toys safe and sound as well as allow for multiple ETB's of creatures if you have a sac outlet.

  • Jester's Mask - this card serves as a sort of Head Games on a rock. At first glance it is much less valuable to its sorcery counterpart as it is much less accessible due to its costs and conditions but, offers its own unique mechanic. There inevitably will be a political mechanic the turn it is placed as it comes in tapped meaning most players will want to make pleas or bargains in order to get their dirty penny of a hand transformed into a crisp 100 dollar bill.

MAY NEED SOME CLARIFICATION

Lands:

Sorcery:

  • Thieves' Auction - serves as the only intended "win con" of the deck. The deck isn't meant to win but, I felt that if it did it should be as a reward for enabling a swollen board state. It also provides a fun minigame and if one is to win as a result it will require some good drafting as well as luck.

Creature:

  • Eater of the Dead - is only meant to provide some small amount of defense when mass reanimating. If their are any problematic creatures or if the graveyards are in need of some balancing Eater of the Dead can be used to surgically sculpt a better and more precise mass multiplayer reanimation.

  • Goblin Welder - will most often serve as utility to recur better artifacts that are bound to get destroyed over the course of the game by the odd boardwipe or what have you. However, it can also be used to support other players in the same manner. Lastly it offers some amount of defense in that, for example, it can turn target Blightsteel Colossus into a Soul Ring.

Enchantment:

Artifact:

  • Library of Leng - simply happens to be one of my favorite cards so it finds its way into most all of my builds
