I went full fail, and the +1/+1 ruins everything.

Crypt of Agadeem is a great hidden gem for mono-black decks looking to use the graveyard, a swamp is you don't have many creatures in grave but once you hit 6+ it starts to ramp.

Remember that if you skullclamp a 1/1 creature, it will die with greater than one toughness, negating Shirei.

With so many ETB and when put into the grave effects Cauldron of Souls could be another fun card for you, give stuff persist and sac them, where the majority of your creatures have 1 toughness they'll come back and immediately die as a state based effect giving you a second trigger, with Shirei, Shizo's Caretaker in play they will then come back a second time with no counters giving access to a third trigger.

Sorry I meant to say power.

@drpeppercan Good suggestions. I will pick up a Crypt of Agadeem , and I'll have to test out Cauldron of Souls . It sounds interesting.

@alexanderholt Thanks, I'm aware that Skullclamp isn't exactly best friends with Shirei. However, it is excellent with token generators such as Pawn of Ulamog or 0-power creatures like Blood Artist . Maybe I will add in Myr Sire to give more token targets

HAYYYYYYYYYY....

You have probably seen my decks around Ghost Dad, and The Happening -- Shirei is one of my favorite generals. I like your list.

I wouldn't worry about doing things with the same creature more than once in a turn --rather, aim to do them once on every turn instead. But, if you do want to go the route of reanimator combos, I would recommend Corpse Dance as your best friend in that department.

Consider how much ammunition you can get for your effects when you have Kormus Bell in play. It seems a lot riskier than it actually is, so long as Shirei has proper protection. Each swamp becomes a 1/1 ready for service, -- and consider the likely event that Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth is on the field -- then all of your opponents lands are creatures too.

Gate to Phyrexia seems like a good idea, but there are better options for both artifacts and permanents generally. Black's strength is in removing creatures! Why try to remove artifacts!? Turn them into creatures instead with Karn, Silver Golem. Then you can recur your small artifacts too, mainly Expedition Map.

The newly spoiled Unstable Obelisk is a strictly better Spine of Ish Sah -- and I would recommend including it when it is up on the site

You can do a lot of work with Genesis Chamber, and it usually benefits you more, especially with something like Disciple of the Vault on the field, alongside blood artist of course.

Contamination -- duh

Xiahou Dun, the One-Eyed is good for those pesky other permanents you need to recur

@illumfolly Thank you for the many solid suggestions. Unstable Obelisk, while not actually strictly better than Spine of Ish Sah, is already on the way in the mail. I just haven't had the opportunity to add it to the decklist yet. I will as soon as it arrives and is in the actual deck.

I own a Corpse Dance and I will put it in the maybeboard for now, it's definitely a solid card. Karn, Silver Golem is cool, but I think he is just a bit too situational for this deck. Kormus Bell definitely is risky because Shirei will die to any board wipe unless he is equipped with Darksteel Plate and Kormus Bell only seems good in that situation. There's also Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite to think about.

Genesis Chamber is a solid suggestion, and I'll stick it in the maybeboard for now. If I see one, I'll try to trade for it. Contamination is also a solid suggestion that I have been thinking about adding to the deck, but I feel like it's just too mean. Again, it seems like a good choice for the maybeboard. Xiahou Dun, the One-Eyed is way out of my price range, so that's not going to happen right now.

Thanks again for your input! Best of luck with your Shirei deck.

True facts about those suggestions --

Check out the new Wake the Dead if you haven't yet -- situational, but mass reanimator at instant speed without an exile clause, and with shirei in play, makes for some pretty sweet value

I'll tell you right now, Contamination is a must have for this deck. Does it suck for everyone else when it comes out? Yes, it does. But it sucks just as bad for you when your Kaalia of the Vast playing friend drops in an Iona, Shield of Emeria and names black.

It's 1 card in 100, but it can win games.

@Chocolatekisses
Pestilence lets me kill all my own guys, if that's what you mean. If I activate it more than once, though, it kills Shirei. I'd rather have a real sacrifice outlet that gains me something by way of sacrificing creatures. Thanks for the idea, though!

Mutilate is a great boardwhipe card to abuse your commanders ability with, while maintaining board control simultaneously. It also kills indestructible critters. And with the new commander rules, you don't need to put your commander into the command zone as id dies, so you can just nice and danty return it to play from your grave at end of turn, along the rest of your creatures.

What about Contamination

December 9, 2014 10:29 p.m.

TheFanatic says... #22

@zepample I have a Contamination and it's in the maybe board of this deck, but right now I feel that it's just too spiky of a card for my commander environment. If that changes, I'll swap it in.

Okay, if you want something close to contamination but more soft, there is always Winter Orb
