Maybeboard

There are plenty of cards to turn your artifacts into creatures, allowing them to beat face with the best of 'em. The ways one can animate their trinkets seems to fall into one of two categories - either they assume a set size, a ala Ensoul Artifact and Rise and Shine, or they become a size equal to their mana cost, a la Karn's Touch. Either way, you know how big of an artifact you're getting out of the deal.

Of course, that's if you're just using any old garden-variety artifact. Some put in a little more work than your average doohickey, in particular the newcomer Agent's Toolkit. Why bother spreading its counters around? Slap an Ensoul Artifact on it and you have a 6/6 with flying, deathtouch and a shield counter. Vehicles can similarly put in work seeing as they have their handy keywords regardless of how they might be animated. Heart of Kiran might require a tapped creature or spent loyalty counter to function, but you can simply point Rise and Shine at it to get a permanent Serra Angel for dirt cheap.

Using counters to give your artifacts power and toughness can be key. Anything that dies can shuffle their +1/+1 counters to The Ozolith, which will either hold onto them for safekeeping or become a big bruiser when it's animated down the line. Simic Keyrune can be animated with four +1/+1 counters and still be able to turn into a 6/7 with Hexproof at a moment's notice. The Blackstaff of Waterdeep can turn any 0/0 with four +1/+1 counters into an enormous 8/8. If all else fails, Tanglepool Bridge is a very safe choice to animate. Not many indestructible 4/4s can be had for zero mana!
