Sideboard

Welcome to Storm 101 here in Witherbloom, where we will go over how to delve into more sinister combos of Strixhaven. If you lack funds or are new to the area, we have setup a regiment that will be very friendly to new comers budgets using very little rare materials.

For those who are not familiar with the term "Storm", it is an old keyword that was on very few instant and sorcery cards from a few sets that made a card put extra copies of itself on the stack based on the number of spells cast before you cast the spell. People made decks to try and close out games with this feature with a finisher like Grapeshot . This function is very similar to the new card Plumb the Forbidden where it creates copies of itself based on the number of creatures we sacrifice to it causing triggers with Witherbloom Apprentice and Professor Onyx to drain the opponent out of the game.

Deck Goal: try to make a very budget friendly combo deck that will be able to wind through attacking or draining the opponent of health. Limit the number of rare cards used as much as possible for for cheaper paper pickup or easier card acquisition for arena.

Primary Card Combo

Combo Step 1: Daemogoth Woe-Eater + Tend the Pests This will allow you to force your opponent to discard a cards, you will gain 2 life, draw a card, and gain up to 7 pest tokens. These tokens are 1/1 tokens that will give you 1 life once they die. To do this comobo you will want to typically wait till you opponent's end phase or you can do it on your upkeep with the Daemogoth's trigger on the stack (Arena users remember to click the icon to hold priority on your upkeep before you let it come back to your turn). Lovestruck Beast is a secondary target for the sacrifice.

Combo Step 2: Plumb the Forbidden + Witherbloom Apprentice + Tokens from step 1. Using the spell Plumb the Forbidden of your tokens with Witherbloom Apprentice in play will allow you to draw a lot of cards and drain your opponent for each spell that gets put on the stack from the sacrifice of the tokens.Warning! your opponent can interrupt this combo with a kill spell on your Apprantice by killing it before the spell trigger puts the copies on the stack.

This combo is enhances with the addition of Dina, Soul Steeper and Bastion of Remembrance . Dina will drain the opponent for each life you leach with the Apprentice triggers and will drain additionally for each pest that dies as they give you one life when they die.

Side Notes

Counter Card Warning: Valentin, Dean of the Vein   is a powerful card that stops the death trigger portion of our deck and should be dealt with before you try to combo off. Have not seen many people trying this new card out, but just wanted to make sure you are warned.

Life lost over Damage dealt: Just a reminder that all the triggers from our cards comes from life loss and is not considered damage for the purpose of Valkmira, Protector's Shield damage reduction. The shield will reduce our token attacking damage to nothing, but we can sacrifice our pests for victory easily enough.

Lands: This is the part that needs the most help with rares if you have them. I do not have them unlocked and would recommend getting the new Necroblossom Snarl and a full set of Darkbore Pathway   for your deck over the Jungle Hollow and Witherbloom Campus if you can optain them.

Personal Take

Fun deck with some serious power. From testing it has managed to take on the ultimatum deck and has won a couple times in testing (bout a 50/50 at the moment). Most deck matchups this has shown good results with most losses coming from bad lands draws (mana shorting or flooding).
