Oh my god I love this. The ability to add Dark Ritual to make such an already cheap deck compete with other powerful cards like Sol Ring is amazing.

Gruesome Deformity is bad. REALLY BAD.
Try Duress as it can help clear the way of removal like Path to Exile or Liliana of the Veil. Even Despise might work.

Normally I agree, Scorprix. But here it's used to slip the lich through unblocked with Worldslayer on to wipe the board. The blue/black version with Aqueous Form worked better, but wasn't budget friendly once you fixed the mana base. Keep in mind, this is for casual play with your friends where the goal is more about having fun than winning as quickly and efficiently as possible.

But is seems inconsistent, and honestly should probably be a Doom Blade if you want to pass through non-black creatures.

It serves its purpose. A Doom Blade only clears the way of one creature. Assuming you're not playing against another black deck, Gruesome Deformity is basically unblockable for 1 mana. If your friend is playing another black deck, swap it out for something better. Maybe the equipment that grants unblockable. I welcome customization to personal tastes to my decks.

At the cost of legality in sanctioned Modern events, kengiczar. But if you're just playing with friends, go for it! It's awesome to drop the Lich or the Nighthawk turn 1!

How about Throne of Geth? You could simply proliferate loads of Phylactery Counters so your Lich will never die.

Have you considered running Apostle's Blessing over Gruesome Deformity?
It gives you evasion from that what u want.
