WU Control Theme and Variations

Modern

Manskittle

Sideboard

DISCLOSURE: This theme and variation was made using entirely "The Comprehensive Modern Azorius Control, Stoneblade, & Midrange Primer" by Francesco Neo Amati. This is just compiled in this way to help people looking into how to build the list.

The primer:https://www.reddit.com/r/ModernMagic/comments/i1k0w9/primer_the_comprehensive_modern_azorius_control/ How to use this:

Core represents a card that is either common in the mainboard and/or sideboard. The number on the mainboard represents the minimum number in performing lists. Some lists do run more, and some lists do run less. The following are typically ranges for some of the more variable cards:

3-4 Snapcaster 2-3 Jace 1-2 Teferi, HoD 1-3 Teferi, Time Raveler 2-3 Cryptic 2-4 Supreme Verdict in Traditional Lists 2-3 Hallowed Fountain 5-7 Islands 2-3 Plains 3-4 Field of Ruin 2-3 Mystic Sanctuary 0-2 Vendilion Clique in midrange/traditional lists

Flex represents cards that are uncommon/not in most performing lists. The number represents the maximum number in performing lists. Flex generally has the following limitations ater including the core:

  • 0-9 creatures
  • 4-10 planeswalkers
  • 4-8 cantrips/card advantage
  • 6-10 counters
  • 4-6 spot removal
  • 2-4 sweepers
  • 0-4 enchantments/artifacts
  • 1-3 equipment in stoneblade
  • 0-8 other flex slots
  • 24-25 lands

Miracles represents the miracles package. This normally at least constitutes of removing the verdicts for the terminus, and increasing mystic sanctuary to 3. The rest represent other cards typically in that package.

Stoneblade represents the stoneforge package. This normally includes at least 3 stoneforges, batterskull, and sword of feast and famine, and includes at least some collonades in the list. The rest represent cards sometimes played in the package.

Midrange represents the "midrange" variant of UW control. This uses a bunch of creatures for threats instead of the stoneforge package, and therefore is intensive in 'core' cards.

The sideboard doesn't have numbers intentionally - the sideboard is incredibly variable. The core of the sideboard are cards commonly seen in sideboards, and should be prioritized. Midrange represents sideboarding into a midrange plan, although some of the cards are still good outside of the transitional plan. Flex are cards good in certain metagames, when they hit a majority of the field.

EDIT: For some reason, the sideboard categories aren't working. I'll be editing this when they are.
