Overview

Introduction

Zombies was the first commander deck that I built as a fledgling commander player. With Eldritch Moon wrapping up it was the perfect time to be a zombie player. I was playing a Blue/Black zombie deck with two separate commanders: Gisa and Geralf & Grimgrin Corpseborn. The deck was pure jank that would occasionally do something stupid. Gradually the playgroup built better decks and Zombies gradually slid into obscurity.

For the last year I had been toying with the idea of finally breaking zombies back out. Commander 2018 released Verina, Lich Queen, which would have upgraded the shell to work with white zombies as well, but I had been thinking about going back to the basics with Mono-Black Zombies. Mikaeus was an option but I didn't want to go combo with him. Time passed, and I let the idea fester in the back of my mind while I put together another theme deck. At last Modern Horizons hit and with the introduction of Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, I knew it was time.

With that said here is my attempt at a Zombie Deck led by Yawgmoth. As time goes on I will continue to try and update the deck so that it becomes more stable and hopefully starts racking up some wins. I submit for your approval, Yawgmoth's Vile Horde.

Design Philosophy

1. This is not a CEDH Deck.
2. The theme is: Zombies & Yawgmoth
3. It shouldn't feel degenerate/unfun to play against.

Budgeting

• Cavern of Souls would probably be my first cut its probably the most expensive card in the list and at best it just makes one zombie a turn uncounterable. I had one in my binder so I included it.
• Cabal Coffers. Another powerful land. This one really shines in mono-black, especially with Urborg. But its the second most expensive card and there are other big mana generators.
• Demonic Tutor. Another card that I included cause it was in my binder. It's good for finding something that your are really hurting for. In a lower power group you could do the same thing with Diabolic tutor a couple turns later.
