Casual* Control Discard WB (Orzhov)

Weston Ayarza

Maybeboard

So I've been playing magic since New Phyrexia was released, and for the most part it's been casual play, with a touch of competitive at the local FNM venues around town. Browsing tappedout every day, I've found a serious lack of original Black/White deck concepts, I mean theres a universal understanding that both colors are good at gaining life, and sacrificing things, but in general it's an abandoned road.

In a lot of ways I'd say I'm more white oriented than I am black, but I'd give my color identity to a close second in the black category. So I'm ashamed to note the lack of creation in my favorite color combination.

I'm here to create a deck that is fun and competitive to play in casual, so that I can make changes to the deck to play the same kind of control in modern, and maybe even standard when gatecrash strikes.

In the past i've usually piloted Azorius control, in various types ranging from polymorph via Proteus Staff, midrange via Baneslayer Angel, and even hard lock via Venser, the Sojourner. All of my decks have included white in it's identity, and most of them have won via card advantage, which is describing of a control deck in general.

An interesting article for you all to read:https://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtgcom/academy/29

In regards to the normal U/W control decklists, I've seen them all, and it's not that I get tired of playing the same archetype, in fact I love playing control decks. But I get somewhat tired of counterspell as a mechanic, and lately I've been digging at discard, because it's proactive against tempo, aggro, and control decks universally.

The flavor and play this deck supports is geared towards the hyperselfishness MBC usually has, but with a touch of exile, and lifegain to make the most out of my friend Yawgmoth, as he makes a very good Bargain. It's mostly trying to trade cards with your opponent strictly on a 2 for 1 basis, through Horrifying Revelation, Hymn to Tourach, and Gerrard's Verdict so that my hand is always more full. It also ramps, and races your opponents resources via Weathered Wayfarer, Orzhov Signet, Pristine Talisman, Due Respect and more efficient threats. Also running the traditional board clear setup of any control deck with white; Day of Judgment in this case, but with the small creature base, and incurrence of black graveyard abuse like Restless Dreams Profane Command and Sheoldred, Whispering One allows me to rebuild my more powerful board faster than my opponent. Well, Mindshatter and Overwhelming Forces helps too, as well as Curse of the Cabal. It includes a sometimes awkward, and sometimes Damning black counterspell entitled Dash Hopes which accompanies an undercosted tempo card called Temporal Extortion. Occasionally it is forced to remove pesky things on a 1 to 1 basis, via Castigate Tidehollow Sculler and of course Doom Blade and Oblivion Ring or Path to Exile. But that's what the draw engines are for! Yawgmoth's Bargain Survival Cache Phyrexian Arena Night's Whisper and Necrologia.

All in all the deck makes a Promise of Power that through Zealous Persecution and a Profane Command an overwhelming Death Grasp can be achieved.

It's all very flavorful, but I'm having trouble deciding the actual 60 card decklist, as there's so many options. I'm also unsure of what matchups are particularly unfavorable for B/W control, and suggestions are welcome. Especially those for a good addition to the creature base, which I feel could become even more elitist.
