Yidris - Cascading Superfriends

Commander / EDH UBRG

Hello fellow MTG fans! I have had a hard time finding a deck that utilizes Yidris' Cascade engine with Planeswalkers. I decided to show case the deck design I am currently undergoing. It both controls the board state with board wipes and bounces, as well as preventing damage with fog esque cards.

First up, lets talk about why we picked Yidris, Maelstrom Wielder vs more popular commanders like Atraxa, Praetors' Voice. Certian commanders have a rep to be hated on. To me its important not to be the biggest target on the board untill you're ready to make your plays. Atraxa is a great commander for a planeswalker deck and I would recommend her 100%; just be ready to be the focus point. Back to Yidris, our Ogre offers us Cascade:

Cascade (When you cast this spell, exile cards from the top of your library until you exile a nonland card whose converted mana cost is less than this spell's converted mana cost. You may cast that card without paying its mana cost. Then put all cards exiled this way that weren't cast on the bottom of your library in a random order.)

There are 2 important notes here. 1 since it is a trigger, it will resolve before your first spell. This can be good and bad and why we have certian cards that allow us to align the top of our deck. 2. Since it is a cast, it can be countered.

Lets talk about our friend's a little bit. Planeswalkers can completely get out of hand. I have witnessed a few decks that can take off within of couple of turns. One of the bigger weaknesses I find to other decks is the amount of Planeswalkers they can get out. This deck is designed to bring in multiple big pieces at a time. Scroll Rack + Sensei's Divining Top gives a tremendous hand in organizing how you will cascade. Reorganizing the top of your deck so you can hit exactly what you wanted.

One of the more important parts of all Planeswalker decks is to be able to get those ultimate's off. The way we work up our Planeswalkers is by using these key cards: Contagion Engine + The Chain Veil +Deepglow Skate + Inexorable Tide +Doubling Season + Gilder Bairn . These are our counter increasers. One of my personal favorites is Inexorable Tide. When you cascade it counts as a cast; you will be getting 2 proliferates off of casting 1 card from hand. When you have a reasonable amount of Planeswalkers out, you want to have 1 of these to start pumping up the loyalty.

The biggest downfalls I have seen in other Yidris decks are that if Yidris dies or cannot be played, their game becomes very weak. This deck is stuffed with other ways to bring out multiple Planeswalkers so you aren't always reliant on your commander.

Combos:

  1. Alchemist's Refuge + As Foretold - Allows you to free cast Planeswalkers opponent's turn.
  2. Teferi, Temporal Archmage + The Chain Veil - You get some serious use out of your Planeswalkers. Utilizing Teferi's second ability to untap 4 permanents is very powerful All you need is a mana source that provides at least 2 and you can go crazy with doubling up tokens on your Planeswalkers.
  3. Heroic Intervention + Jokulhaups - Your stuff stays, opponent's lose theirs.
  4. Rogue's Passage + Yidris, Maelstrom Wielder - Allows you to guarantee that your spells will cascade this turn.
  5. Alchemist's Refuge + Toxic Deluge - Very strong defensive. Allows you to cast Toxic Deluge on an opponent's turn. If someone is swinging in with a ton of indestructible creatures, this can save you or even win the game.

This deck is still in testing. Any suggestions are appreciated!
