Yidris Unexpected Results

Commander / EDH

flawgon

Yidris, Maelstrom Wielder prototype. Essentially get maximum value out of Yidris' ability.

The main idea here is more mana more cascades. So you essentially have a nice big ramp package, ways to protect Yidris/give him haste and then value spells. In addition you are going to want to cast Unexpected results as many times as you possibly can (for value). I haven't done it in an actual game yet but I suspected that casting Unexpected Results with Cascade may be good.

Especially exciting parts of the deck:

  • Unexpected results is a fun Magic card. This deck has ways to tutor it up, ways to pull it back from the graveyard and enough ramp to cast it multiple times a turn.
  • The deck can adapt to the play styles of the other deck at the table. Lots of battle cruisers being built and craziness happening? Use your tutors to find Unexpected Results or Blood Mist for that sweet double cascade action. You can pull Avenger of Zendikar out of an opponent's deck with Bribery and kick Rite of Replication on it for the ultimate plant army. Among a more cut throat group tutor into the Omniscience/Enter the Infinite combo as fast as possible or grab Blightsteel Colossus and throw some boots on it.
  • The deck has many flex slots. Essentially anything in the "Free Stuff" category is not needed for the deck to run properly (barring maybe Omniscience) and you can go even further than that if you want to change the feel of the deck.
  • Consistency in the form of library manipulation also helps fuel the decks main focus (Yidris' cascade ability). Also comes with plenty of shuffle effects to get cards you don't like off the top.
  • Casting a one drop with cascade gives you Ancestral Vision as long as it's in your library.
  • The mana base does not need to be as expensive as it is as this is essentially a Green/Blue deck splashing for Black and Red.

Potential issues with the deck:

  • Casting a spell that shuffles your library (Ramp spells, Unexpected Results, etc) and cascading into a tutor that puts the card on top of your library feels bad. Probably not bad enough to take out excellent cards like Mystical Tutor but still bad.
  • Epic Experiment is a nonbo with both cascade and Unexpected Results. However there are 39 instants/sorceries in the deck and a lot of ramp so the hope is that it's still worth the inclusion.
  • The deck was an Intet, the Dreamer deck prior to Yidris' reveal so some things that worked in Intet may not actually be good any more. For instance Omniscience and Enter the Infinite can't be cascaded into and since Intet is simply in the 99 it may be more trouble than it's worth to try to get Omni/Infinite into play. There are also probably some good black spells I'm missing out on because of this (let me know!).
  • There aren't as many boardwipes as I tend to play. It just feels bad to cascade into Damnation when you don't want to so the ones in the deck are either unreasonably large like Blasphemous Act or adaptable like Toxic Deluge.
  • Cascading into Cyclonic Rift is very lukewarm. On the other hand, it's Cyclonic Rift.

Also, if you flip enter the infinite off of Unexpected results too early in the game to follow it up with an Omniscience next turn don't panic. If you have 6 lands in play (or 5 + Deathrite Shaman) simply cast Heartbeat of Spring into Turnabout next turn.

I'm super excited about Yidris and am excited to see what everyone brews up in the next few days.
