It all started with the decision to make an eldrazi commander. Which meant: No colors at all. During the development process, which is still ongoing a lot of ideas had to be discarded (mainly due to the fact of understanding how deep "color identity" actually impacts: Even colors in the rule texts apply, which threw out some very much loved cards). What's left is a deck which has two targets: Gather as much mana as fast as possible and slow down the enemy long enough till the monstrous commander is in game. Among all the legendary eldrazi, I chose the ceaseless hunger, because the deck already provides a lot of card draw, so Kozilek is not needed, because Ulamog is indestructible, making it harder to get rid of, and because he removes two permanents instantly, enabling the player to exile problems on the other side of the board. The rest is a nice gimmick.
