M15 Standard (Jund Wurm)

Casual* BRG (Jund) Devotion RG (Gruul)

Sideboard

This is a modified, slimmed-down variant on a deck originally posted by BlackEcho which they called Verdant Explosion (can be found here: Verdant Explosion: Epic Green Devotion.) My build is different, however, in a number of ways:

  1. I splash black in addition to red. I did this to mainboard Golgari Charm. This was initially a response to wipes like Anger of the Gods or Supreme Verdict, but also because of the utility its other two abilities have. Being able to pick off a Courser of Kruphix or a Master of the Feast for 2 mana is no joking matter, and there are enough 1/1 tokens or x/1 threats out there (Master of Waves, for example, though Elvish Mystic is also a favorite victim of mine) that giving all creatures -1/-1 is actually quite useful a lot of the time. I also splash red a little bit more heavily, as will be explained below.

  2. Largely because of the mana requirements and the -1/-1 ability of the charm, I swapped Elvish Mystic for Sylvan Caryatid. This had the added benefits of giving me a hexproof mana dork with significantly better appeal as a blocker. This had the added benefit of improving my consistency against both aggro and control; the marginal loss in speed has been more than made up for in consistency. And it let me avoid Mana Confluence, which was not particularly impressive in my playtests with it.

  3. My sideboard incorporates Putrefy to further justify splashing black.

  4. I play at 60 cards, rather than 65. I did this to focus on consistency; Primeval Bounty, two lands, and a copy of Arbor Colossus are functionally what I ended up cutting.

  5. My mana curve is significantly lower than BlackEcho's; this was a deliberate choice, and it's one which has also improved the consistency of the deck against my meta. It was achieved by side-boarding Nylea, God of the Hunt and removing a copy of Garruk and both of Hydra Broodmaster. In their place went the Golgari Charms and 2 copies of Domri Rade; this was because, in addition to being cheaper to cast than Garruk, Domri's +1 combos ridiculously well with Courser of Kruphix, often allowing me to both play a land off the top and draw a creature in the same turn. Domri's -2 also turns my fatties into a form of removal, especially against fragile but obnoxious cards like Guttersnipe, and helps diversify the removal suite available to me.

  6. I play 3 copies of Xenagos, God of Revels and 2 of Polukranos, World Eater rather than 2 and 3. This is because Xenagod's ability is generally more applicable than Polukranos, as I have back-up forms of removal in both main and sideboard, and Xenagos into Worldspine Wurm is this deck's best win-con.

That said, it's pretty straighforward in terms of strategy: ramp into fat creatures and beat face with them, using Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx, mana dorks (Voyaging Satyr for its ability to target Nykthos, and Sylvan Caryatid as a hexproof blocker against aggro that also helps ramp and provide access to all three colors), Xenagos, the Reveler's +1, and Garruk, Caller of Beasts' -3 to get them onto the field. Domri, Courser of Kruphix, Scrylands, and Garruk's +1 all help provide card advantage.

This deck dominates in casual play, and I've been getting progressively better at playing it every FNM I go to. It eats mono-black and was great against mono-blue, but Polymorphist's Jest from M15 is an extremely irritating card that I expect to be seeing a lot of until rotation.

Pretty much all of my losses have come from keeping hands I should have mulliganed or other strategic errors; this deck is fairly resilient, and the sideboard helps transform it into entirely different decks as needed.
