Sideboard

When I first started playing Magic, the first deck I bought was an Innistrad Intro Pack based around Spirits. I converted that deck to a pretty fun casual deck, and now I have converted it to Modern.

If you want to make this the ideal deck, throw in Aether Vials instead of Spectral Procession, Cavern of Souls in for basics and fetches, shocks, and stuff. Maybe splash black if you want to add in cards like Lingering Souls or control in Thoughtseize and Fatal Push.

Interested in more of a budget version than this? Throw in Deprive or Dungeon Geists or some other counter/control for Spell Queller. Seachrome Coast is a great first-two-turns draw, but to get more budget, throw in more basics. Same for Port Town . The sideboard is a good chunk of money so cutting that saves a chunk and probably gets you under $20.

That being said, in this version, you can still easily get a good curve going with a turn 1 Mausoleum Wanderer, turn 2 Rattlechains, and a turn 3 Drogskol Captain--which means that if you hit all your cards correctly you can win by turn 5. Not bad for more casual-end Modern.

Even if you can't tempo out, this deck is built for long games as well. A control package of 4 Spell Queller along with Remand s and Mana Leaks is enough to keep you as the dominant player on the field, and the Path to Exiles do their job effectively. Selfless Spirit protects you from the inevitable Wrath of God in game 2, and a second one slots well in the sideboard.

The ideal hand in this deck results in a turn-4 win. Obviously that's not always going to happen, but it's a cool possibility.

Opening Hand: Seachrome Coast (6.6% chance), Mausoleum Wanderer (6.6% chance), Plains/ Seachrome Coast (18.3% chance), Plains (11.7% chance), Spectral Procession (6.6% chance), Drogskol Captain (6.6% chance), Selfless Spirit/Rattlechains (8.3% chance)

The odds of this specific hand happening are 11 in 2,187,000,000. Also roughly .00000352%. I'm pretty sure I did my probability right, but I could be wrong. Anyway, it's pretty unlikely. But in the negligible chance you do draw this hand, here's how you play it:

T1: Seachrome Coast , Mausoleum Wanderer. Opponent life total: 20

T2: Either land from hand, Selfless Spirit/Rattlechains, trigger Mausoleum Wanderer, swing for 2 (2 from Wanderer). Opponent life total: 18

T3: Other land from hand, Spectral Procession, trigger Mausoleum Wanderer 3x, swing for 6 (4 from Wanderer, 2 from 2-drop Spirit). Opponent life total: 12

T4: Drogskol Captain. Give all Spirits +1/+1, trigger Mausoleum Wanderer, swing for 12 (3 from Wanderer, 6 from assorted Spirit tokens, 3 from 2-drop Spirit). Opponent life total: 0. HE GONE

The cool thing about this ideal hand is that you can achieve this without drawing any cards. I didn't include the probability of drawing your cards on the right turn but still be aware it's pretty unlikely--there are 60! ways to arrange these cards and though this combination comes up many times it's still not very likely to happen.

Feel free to playtest it out and have some fun!

Drastically lowered curve and changed this thing into a huge tempo deck. Aether Vial fits in really well and would make this thing more competitive but dropping $200 when the rest of the deck costs ~$150 isn't viable in the more budget area.
