Ive been contemplating a build like this; I loved the idea of Rabblemaster and Brimaz constantly pump out tokens to sac for the Butcher. And there so much boss Red burn and Black-White removal in standard right now its insane. +1

Brimaz, King of Oreskos is a legendary creature, so you cant play two of hem at the same time, so it isn't good if you have two of hem at your hand. Three of hem is a good number. And I have a suggestion for your deck, did you think to add Soldier of the Pantheon he is very good since there are a lot of multicolored cards.

I used to run 2-3 of the soldier, but they just never measured up to the champion or swiftspear. It was also my least favourite of the three to draw in the late game. Thanks for the suggestion though!

The new set (Fate Reforged) comes with some awesome new cards for Mardu so far. There will be a good burn/kill card: Harsh Sustenance. Cause you play a lot of tokens and small creatures this spell might become huge! Also it heals you. It could also be a good trickcard. Because in fact it is just a burn spell that does not red mana. So your opponent sees you dont have red mana. So he casts a big creature or a walker cause you cant burn him. Then you play this card and it is bye creature/player/walker.

Mardu Shadowspear is an OK card. He always does damage when he has the chance to attack (he has with dash) and it is just a 1 or 2 drop.

But probably the best new card for mardu and black aggro is: Mardu Strike Leader. It is maybe even good as Goblin Rabblemaster. You might count him as your 5th till 8th Goblin Rabblemaster.Think it will be great in this deck.

Because these cards are not in the inventory of Tappedout yet I posted the links to them for you:

Thanks so much for those links! I hadn't seen Harsh Sustenance yet, it is in for sure!! The deck is in dire need for some lifegain that doesn't depend on the butcher's abilities. The Strike Leader is a must as well!! The deck will get a big over haul with FRF coming out.

Also it just occurred to me that if I have Souldfire Grand Master out at the time I will gain double the life! This set it getting ridiculous!!

Mardu and Jeskai are getting a bit out of control atm with the new set... And yes, Soulfire Grand Master will be strong. Altough im not sure if it will be good in this deck. In Jeskai combo or burn/lifegain that card will be really strong!

First off love the deck and Kudos on the tournament things. Control is a B***h. Secondly, I have a question. has Kolaghan, the Storm's Fury worked well for you? What are your takes on something like Ashcloud Phoenix in a build like this. I think it could serve you well.

Hats off, and +1 from me.

Thanks a bunch DragoLion!!

Kolaghan is awesome, I have swung for the win with it more times than I can count. Nobody really expects or plays around it. Ashcloud isn't a card I've thought about but I probably should.. the 4 drop slot is something that needs work. I'd probably test both it and Thunderbreak Regent in that slot.

Thunderbreak Regent is really awesome. Once they resolve they have to either trade it with something good or they have to take 3 damage. Both of it is fine. A lot of times they wont even have the chance to block it. I mean abzan doesnt have a lot of flyers appart from a Wingmate Roc which isnt in all abzan decks. How about the new Dragonlord Kolaghan. Against some aggro decks and maybe even against abzan/temur decks it is really nasty. Against sultai or B/U control it wont do much but it can work. I mean if they have a counter/kill card in their yard. They will think twice about casting it. Also nice it has haste and all you creatures get haste.

And since we are talking about Wingmate Roc it might be a good card for mirror matches and aggro/burnish decks. The life gain can just be enough. You can also use Foul-Tongue Shriek which i think is a really nasty and underrated card. It can swing a game, can give you lots of life (together with Soulfire Grand Master a buttload) and damages a lot.

Edit: oops read wrong Foul-Tongue Shriek doest do damage so it doesnt 'lifesteal' together with Soulfire Grand Master. But you can get the card back if you want.

Xydroth, thanks for the comments and suggestions :) I think Dragonlord Kolaghan would be too slow, at 6 mana it's going to be hard for me to cast it on curve. As for Wingmate Roc I think Stormbreath Dragon is just a better card. At best they both dominate a game but at worst stormbreath can help bring the game back. Foul-Tongue Shriek is Brutal Hordechief without the 3/3 body, and without the body the card needs too much help to be good. At least with the hordechief you can cast it on an empty board. Thanks again for the comments! If you have any more suggestions please send them through!

For the Zurgo Bellstriker vs Monastery Mentor question, I'm not sure I like either, but I think Zurgo is better for an aggro deck than Mentor is for a midrange deck. However, this seems more a longer-range controlling deck so Mentor is probably the better fit.

Or maybe something like an Ire Shaman would be a completely different kind of approach for that slot.

I noticed Foul-Tongue Invocation is getting much more play in the top tier tournaments over Ultimate Price. You're running a good amount of dragons so maybe it fits for your needs.

Love the Kolaghan's Command in the deck.

Thanks for the input jawz, after the bit of testing I've done I'm leaning toward mentor as well.

Ire Shaman is on my radar for the deck, I had it in a R/B aggro deck and I always put in a lot of work and whenever I had the chance to morph it the card advantage was amazing.

Foul-Tongue Invocation has been on my mind as well, how often do you think not being able target would hurt more than help?

The command is amazing! Definitely an all star in the deck

I'm trying! :p It's just not as good as thunderbreak. At least not in this build. I'm really hoping he gets better post rotation

I'm worried every creature here dies to a Languish, a solution could be Dictate of Heliod to put most of the team out of range, and it can trigger prowess for a super combat trick. You could even run both to pump your team and kill theirs. Looks like a fun deck, +1. I think the Dictate could make it unbeatable

ValueBear says... #21

Jimmy_Chinchila thanks for the input! Dictate of Heliod was a card I toyed with and used way back when I first made the deck, there were a couple reason I don't run it now. My creature suite got bigger, so the more mana expensive creatures pushed it out of the main deck and put it into the sideboard. Then my sideboard got updated and upgraded with the new set releases. So unfortunately it has just been pushed out by better cards.

As for dealing with Languish I have a couple options. If someone is running languish it is usually pretty obvious that they are setting up for it. So I have to be able to read those plays, and not over commit to the board. Second option is the newly added High Sentinels of Arashin the +1 counter ability just makes languish null and void. Option three is accept that it beat me in game one and board in my Outpost Sieges in and bury my opponent in card advantage!

I hope all that helps explain my decisions on dictate and beating languish!

I think running it as a one of in main and maybe one more in side could do some work. Testing it couldn't hurt

Alrighty then, what do you guys think the dictate could replace? In both the main and side. Jimmy_Chinchila yoshiman95

For the sake of testing I'll try a couple different cards
