In the olden days of yesteryear there was an effect in magic known as Mana Burn. This old school effect caused players to be damaged by any unspent mana at the end of each phase (Beginning Phase, 1st main. combat, 2nd main, end phase). Now Wizards has given us this same ability, but on a commander Yurlok of Scorch Thrash!

The main strategy is to flood your opponents with as much mana on their off turns that they cannot spend, allowing them to die to mana burn effects. For this we will be running several untap effects such as Sword of the Paruns, Umbral Mantle and Staff of Domination to allow us to spam the commanders mana production abilities and flood our opponents with (hopefully) unusable mana.

Hand hate has been added in the form of spells like Necrogen Mists, Oppression, Court of Ambition, and Bottomless Pit forcing your opponents to play their cards or risk losing them. Additionally, slug and stax pieces like Citadel of Pain and Dosan the Falling Leaf are used to punish our opponents for untapped lands and prevent them from casting spells on their off turns.

Helix Pinnacle serves a dual purpose in this deck. Both to protect yourself from your own mana burn effects by allowing you to sink your unused mana at the end of turn, but also as an alternative wincon.

Ankh of Mishra and Nightshade Harvester help provide landfall hate etc.

Ensnaring Bridge + Bottled Cloister = Nobody attacks me

Yurlok of Scorch Thrash + Sword of the Paruns/Umbral Mantle/Staff of Domination + Nyxbloom Ancient/Mana Reflection/Leyline of Abundance = Flood your opponents with Jund mana

War's Toll/Mana Web + Price of Glory = Control players cry

Awakening + Power Surge + Price of Glory = Take damage or destroy your lands (there are several similar iterations of this type of combination)

Awakening + Power Surge + Manabarbs = No matter what you take damage from your lands.

Awakening + Power Surge + City of Solitude/Dosan the Falling Leaf = Tap your lands and take mana burn, or don't tap and take damage from power surge

Mana burn go brrrrrrrrr

Updates Add

Phyrexian Arena was removed to add Harsh Mentor back in. While the arena can be great to get some regular card draw, the mentors ability to shut down enemy combo pieces/payoffs is pretty strong.

Might switch it back, but unsure.
