Zandl's Big-Ass Wipes (1st @ FNM!)

Sideboard

Not to be confused with "big ass wipes". Note the hyphen.

Because I'm tired of watching all of these board-swarming decks win tournaments when all you need is a well-aimed board-wipe to shut them out.

Moved Centaur Healer to the sideboard in favor of Borderland Ranger. I feel like the Ranger would just help me more in the early-game against everything but Aggro. Against Mid-range decks, hitting my land-drops is far more important than simply gaining 3 life.

Figured I'd throw it down where my college friends play over their breaks.

Round 1: me vs. Esper Spirits

Destroyed him. He would play a Geist of Saint Traft, and I'd drop Supreme Verdict. He would keep using Lingering Souls, I'd drop Terminus. My deck performed EXACTLY how it was designed to: Fuck your creatures until I drop something you can't deal with. 2-0

Round 2: me vs. Junk Frites

Game 1 was a blowout in my favor. Game 2, he nearly Reanimated a Craterhoof Behemoth with a bunch of Lingering Souls tokens out, but by the time it happened, I had Alchemist's Refuge with Supreme Verdict on deck. After killing everything he had after he tapped out, I dropped a Rest in Peace I had just drawn and it was all over. 2-0

Round 3: me vs. RDW

Game 1 was simple. I saw 2 Thragtusks and that kinda means you win right off the bat. Game 2, I kept a hand with Rhox Faithmender, 2 Centaur Healers, a Supreme Verdict, and 3 good lands. I was doing very well up until about the fifth turn, when it occurred to me that I was only drawing lands. I drew 7 lands in a row (literally) until I drew a Thragtusk, but my Faithmender was long gone and Thragtusk simply came out too late to stop the onslaught. Game 3 resulted in a draw because we somehow managed to neutralize each others spells the moment we drew them. Went to turns and we were both at 1. I had Dissipate in my hand with a ton of land, so had time not been a factor, I'm sure I could've taken the game. 1-1-1

Round 4: me vs. R/B Aggro

Game 1 started off with me on the play. He dropped a Stromkirk Noble and attacked with it on the following turn, right into my 2/2 Soldier token from Selesnya Charm. Did I mentioned that Selesnya Charm is probably the best of the Charm cycle thus far? Its utility is undeniable. Anyways, a Supreme Verdict to mop up his 1-drop creatures left him without much fuel for Falkenrath Aristocrat. Game 2, I ramped like a mother and found my Alchemist's Refuge. He dropped two Falkenrath Aristocrats over two turns and I forced him to sacrifice one to the other when I flashed in a Supreme Verdict. A Drogskol Reaver flashed in on the following combat phase when he had nothing to sacrifice meant he had to sac his own creature to itself to prevent me from gaining life and drawing cards. No follow-up kill-spell led the way to me smashing his face, gaining a ton of life, and drawing a ton of cards. Game 2 ended with a Thragtusk, an Angel of Serenity, and all 3 Sphinx's Revelations in my hand.

Top 4: me vs. RDW from Round 3

Had a much easier time this round. My Thragtusks loved me in the first game and I started the second game with 3 good lands, a Farseek, a Centaur Healer, and both copies of Rhox Faithmender. I dunno. He shuffled my deck before cut.

Top 2: me vs. U/W Control

Probably my roughest match-up currently. Game 1 sucked. I drew crap that needed to be sided out and he apparently started with a god-hand. For the second game, I sided in Garruk, Primal Hunter, Sigarda, Host of Herons, and the Deathrite Shamans for secret tech. Deathrite Shamans killed him. He tried to use Detention Sphere on both, but it met a firm Dissipate with no response. I was gaining life with one Shaman and Shocking him with the other each turn. By the time he found a second Detention Sphere, he was way too low on life and I had just busted a nut with Sphinx's Revelation for, like, 9. I found my Cavern of Souls, named Spirit, dropped 2 Drogskol Reavers in two turns, and he scooped.

Game 3, I started with my Cavern of Souls in my opening hand. I named Angel on it, and dropped a Restoration Angel to deal with his Tamiyo, the Moon Sage. Not sure what he was thinking. He tapped my Cavern and I cast Resto in response, but since he was now tapped out, I threw down a land and a Keyrune, swung with the Resto in Tamiyo, and pumped with Selesnya Charm to kill it off. He had board-wipes for my creatures, but Keyrunes are an entirely different beast. He fell to two copies of Azorius Keyrune bashing in for 4 each turn, for which he could only bounce to my hand or the top of my deck.

Got first place and 7 packs. I opened a Temple Gardenfoil and then a bunch of shit that I gave to some little kid to make his day. 'Cuz I'm zandl and I'm awesome.
