Regarding Devastation Tide and Evacuation : I play them both in my Zegana deck and I love them. Simic has a lot of really good ETBs, including Zegana herself. Resetting your own board is usually a good thing. Sure, you can't just wipe and beat that same turn, but it gives you long-game advantage.
I'd swap Rampant Growth for Kodama's Reach and look into Skyshroud Claim and/or Explosive Vegetation over some of your mana dorks.
Oblivion Stone is probably the best straight wipe available in these colors, but Perilous Vault might be better if you really aren't going to play the graveyard.
Other pseudo-wipe options are Ixidron , Bane of Progress , and Kederekt Leviathan .
Just some thoughts.

I like my mana dorks because they work faster than Explosive Vegetation
, I might do Kodama's Reach
over Wood Elves
because it gets me more lands and one of each color so it's just as good fixing as tutoring up a Breeding Pool
, if not better. I don't want to turn any of my turn 1 or 2 things into turn 3 or 4 things, the deck is already among the slower of my group.
maybe I'll try out an Evacuation
or Devastation Tide
, reusing ETBs would be cool, and hopefully I could get like, Prophet of Kruphix
and just recover that round. maybe.
there is a Perilous Vault
in my group I'll be trading for, so I'll definitely be running that over Oblivion Stone
because of easy attainability. though I would rather the stone because it could pair with Soul of New Phyrexia
to do one-sided shenanigans.

Soul's Might might be decent in this deck. Good job either way, +1.

Soul's Might is cool but I generally need more creatures, not bigger creatures. thanks

Empyrial Plate has stupid amounts of synergy with Zegana. Not to mention creatures with power and toughness equal to cards in your hand, like Overbeing of Myth , Sturmgeist , Masumaro, First to Live and Molimo, Maro-Sorcerer . And if you want to go for a Laboratory Maniac win, adding Crystal Shard and Riptide Laboratory let you drop him from your hand for much less.

@Teal_Fox I believe you mean Multani, Maro-Sorcerer rather than Molimo

so far the power/toughness-equal-to-hand gang aren't my favorite cards for the deck. I need creatures that enable zegana for a first play, creatures with good utility, creatures that control the board, and creatures that give me mana. The hand-size gang don't have the most relevant abilities out there (some give small amounts of card advantage that generally are irrelevant to the amount of cards I'm drawing off of replays/plays/flickers of zegana). Empyrial Plate
is a mana investment for a power toughness buff. in this deck I tend to have no free mana until I'm ready to win the game. sometimes because I'm constantly playing cards, sometimes because I need to have spare for Elite Arcanist
or Soul of New Phyrexia
activations. sometimes for both. being sorcery speed is a really big downfall for it to have, or I would consider it.
Crystal Shard and Riptide Laboratory wouldn't help me get the maniac into play at all, they just put things back into my hand. but the shard might be something I play, it helps my control my opponents field or it puts zegana back in my hand for more draws in a situation where I need it. or Woodfall Primus replays. or reset Polukranos, World Eater monstrous, save something important from a board wipe. so maybe the shard will come in
thanks for the advice, I do appreciate it, but I've found that power/toughness equal to hand size is specifically ungood in zegana. They only win a game that I'm already ahead in and if I'm behind they are just a dead draw. All the cards in a commander deck need to be relevant while ahead and behind and they just don't fit that spot.

I like Eternity Vessel for mass life gain, and seeing as how you have a decent amount of ramp, it's not impossible to get it out early

I like Venser's Journal and Soul Conduit for life gain. I'll almost definitely pick up the journal next time I'm ordering cards, unfortunately that probably won't be any time soon. Thanks.
Eternity Vessel
is cool but doesn't help me if I draw it in the late game, I would need to get it early. the convenient thing about this deck is having 2 or 3 of an effect means I'm relatively likely to draw one of them after a first or second zegana play, so making things relevant the entire game is important, thanks for the thought though.

In terms of just great Simic value creatures, what do you think of Coiling Oracle , Lorescale Coatl , Shardless Agent , Trygon Predator , Mystic Snake , and Edric, Spymaster of Trest ? Also, from Khans, a great EDH card for blue is Kheru Spellthief.

Also, Voidslime , Plasm Capture and Mystic Genesis are all great Simic counterspells.

Shardless Agent seems not worth it to me, I could just draw the card it would cascade into, and the 2/2 body isn't relevant at all. I would hate to waste a counterspell off of him. Mystic Snake I have one of, but I don't have much instant speed flickering (aside from Deadeye Navigator so I would rather just have insant counterspells that I can use under Elite Arcanist at need, also I like 3 mana as a max-price for counterspells, for convenience of how much mana to hold on to. along the same lines, Plasm Capture and Mystic Genesis are more expensive ones without super good benefit (capture I consider every time I'm editing. but 4 color specific mana is a lot and annoying to play around. generally doesn't feel worth it)
Edric, Spymaster of Trest
I consider, but I just like Rhystic Study
more as a three-drop. doesn't give opponents value, and makes their lives a pain.
Voidslime
is unfortunately above my budget at 8 dollars for a barely-better Cancel
. Lorescale Coatl
doesn't do anything but be a beater, and I don't like having anything without utility in the deck. There's no reason to run a creature that doesn't net some amount of out-of-combat gain in commander, too many board wipes and removal.
Coiling Oracle
is cool, but I would prefer a consistent form of either ability. I like to know what my plan is when I start out a game, and being unsure how much mana I'll have is a problem. Maybe I'm making excuses against a good card, but I just don't think I'm a fan of it. I don't know what I would take out for it if I had one.
Trygon Predator
I've thought about before. as of yet it isn't super relevant in my group so I haven't decided to get one. Maybe I'll go for it, if I can find something to remove for it.
Kheru Spellsnatcher
is awesome and I hadn't paid much attention to khans for commander, I'll definitely see about picking one up, probably after a bit of opening khans to make sure I don't just pull one.
if you have any ideas about what can be removed for the spellsnatcher or the predator let me know, I'm running low on cards I dislike in the deck, and thanks for the thoughts.

Have you thought of Dictate of Kruphix or Consecrated Sphinx ?
October 16, 2014 11:29 p.m.
asasinater13 says... #17
I generally don't need the extra cards, Dictate of Kruphix
benefits everyone and this deck intends to beat people by just having more things than they can answer, filling their hands would be bad.
Consecrated Sphinx I regretably traded off right before I made the deck. I'm not sure I would include it either way, as the extra cards aren't always super relevant to me. I rely heavily on my commander for extra cards and the cards it provides me to answer whatever is going on on the board.

I don't quite know what I would remove for Crop Rotation as it doesn't net me any advantage accept switching lands. I've found between my amount of scry, Reap and Sow , Kruphix, God of Horizons , and the Reliquary Tower I tend to draw into some way of keeping my hand before I've discarded too much to it. I can also Worldly Tutor for kruphix at need, and ulting tamiyo adds a similar max hand-size effect.
if I was that concerned, I would probably include Spellbook before I would include Crop Rotation , so I don't have to potentially remove colored sources.
thanks for the thought, though.
