FNM Report 6/14/13 (Top 8) —June 15, 2013
So this deck far exceeded my expectations on its debut night at FNM. It went 3-0 and drew in rounds 4 and 5 to land on the #1 seed in Top 8. I never realized how well the list runs and how well it can climb its way out of the brink.
R1: Junk Tokens (W 2-1)
This is the same junk tokens I played as the BUG control in the first round of Top 8 a few weeks back. The list is very potent, but was no match for my huge creatures that just swing back harder along with the lifegain to keep me alive. Won game 1 thanks to Garruk, Primal Hunter making a 5/5 beast token every turn with Master Biomancer on the field. My roided beasts proved too big to handle. Lost game 2 because I thought Sever the Bloodline took 2 black mana when I had only one when in fact it needed only one. I could have swept the board and stabilize since he was in topdeck mode then. Blew out game 3 thanks to Golgari Charm followed by Sever the Bloodline later to keep his board clear.
R2: Orzhov Zombies (W 2-0)
Got to play my friend alecroth28 who played his Sac Attack deck (He did pretty well after a long break from FNM and ended up with a 3-2 record). Was on the brink at 2 life to his 25 in game 1 but finally came back when I was able to make a Blood Artist token per turn with Progenitor Mimic along with Garruk, Primal Hunter creating all the beast tokens to sacrifice with my Progenitor Mimic who came in as Cartel Aristocrat. He had only one Blood Artist on the board against my 4 (and counting) so I was able to clear my board and completely drain him to death despite his Obzidat, ghost council being in play (who got me that low in the first place). He had relatively slow draws game 2 and I eventually went over the top.
R3: Naya Midrange (W 2-0)
Guy had poop draws in game 1, hitting a huge land pocket in his deck as I start pumping out large tokens, again thanks to Garruk, Primal Hunter. Game 2 he got me to 9 life before he had to switch back to defense when Garruk, Primal Hunter, after surviving 2 Bonfire of the Damned for 3, started flooding the board with huge tokens and swarmed him in the end.
So at this point, I was 3-0 and there being 5 rounds for the night meant that I could draw the last two matches and still be in top 8. I did just that and, to my surprise, I was #1 in the standings after 5 rounds of play. I've never placed first going into Top 8 before and I was ecstatic that it finally happened.
Someone decided to play it out instead of splitting so we did play.
R1: Jund Midrange (L 0-2)
Deck ran out of mojo in this round. The guy got to play first in game 1 and was able to get Sire Of Insanity out before I could cast my Prime Speaker Zegana, which killed my hand and mostly my chance to catch up. Game 2 went grim when he Slaughter Games my Thragtusk away, killing any chance at lifegain that I had, then proceeded to play Sire Of Insanity (again) to keep me down. I was able to resolve 2 AEtherling and I had 7 lands with him at 16 life, which meant that I needed to draw a land next turn to win the game or he will the very next thanks to Olivia Voldaren and Sire Of Insanity hitting for lethal. I didn't draw the land. I got him to 1 life but it was over.
All in all, I am very proud of this list that I made and will continue trying to improve the deck as it sees more play time.
MVP of the Night: Garruk, Primal Hunter
