Zensunni Wanderers | Hazezon Tamar

Commander / EDH Battlecruiser Multiplayer RGW (Naya)

It all started when I walked in a friend's shop and saw Hazezon in the diplay case. I simply had to buy it, out of nostalgia.

Back in the days, Hazezon Tamar was the type of cards I would not have taken a second look at. High casting cost, delayed trigger, major drawback when it leaves the battlefield; I did not see the potential.

Flash-forward to the birth of Commander, then known as EDH. My playgroup adopted the format immediately, as it aligned with our mindset and goals of playing MTG; having fun in a casual, multiplayer setting, without two games being the same. My initial Commanders were Uril, the Miststalker and Teneb, the Harvester, eventually replaced with Karador, Ghost Chieftain. Later came Kaalia of the Vast and Sigarda, Host of Herons, the latter remaining one of my all-time favourites. Mayael the Anima replaced Uril.

However, abusing mana and tokens multiplication had never been a play style that interested me, so my collection had some serious blind spots. No Doubling Season, Parallel Lives or Mana Reflection. No Craterhoof Behemoth.

With the help of my friend Marco, I inventoried my collection and was able to free enough trade value to acquire them, and several other gems, that allowed me to complete this deck and add overall value to my card pool.
My deck focuses on Hazezon Tamar’s token creation ability, aiming to kill with Sand Warriors either by attacking with haste and boosts or dealing damage through direct triggers. I avoid Hazezon's drawback by sacrificing him before the Sand Warriors enter, keeping them safe for a big, game-ending attack.

**Playstyle**
This deck rewards smart timing and careful setup. The goal is to ramp quickly, get token doublers and sacrifice outlets in place, and then play Hazezon when I’m ready to generate a massive board of tokens. I clone Hazezon, sacrifice the copies before my next upkeep, and then unleash an army of Sand Warriors.

With Ogre Battledriver and Lovisa Coldeyesfoil providing haste and boosts, or Impact Tremors and Goblin Bombardment turning token generation into direct damage, I aim to win through overwhelming my opponents. If needed, backup finishers like Craterhoof Behemoth, Triumph of the Hordes, or Mirror Entity offer alternative routes to victory, ensuring that I have multiple ways to close out the game.

Key Strategies
Cards like Anointed Procession, Doubling Season, Parallel Lives, and Ojer Taq, Deepest Foundation allow me to maximize Hazezon Tamar's Sand Warriors. With Divine Visitation, these tokens even transform into 4/4 Angels for extra impact. In addition to Hazezon, cards like Avenger of Zendikar, Secure the Wastes, and Starnheim Unleashed contribute to flooding the board with tokens.

My ramp package, including Nature's Lore and Three Visits, also capitalizes on potentially making copies of Wood Elves or Yavimaya Dryad. Fetchlands like Arid Mesa and Marsh Flats ensure landfall triggers and smooth out my mana base.

Avenger of Zendikar and Rampaging Baloths benefit from the consistent land drops and ramp strategies, adding more power to the battlefield.

I aim to copy Hazezon with cards like Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker and Flameshadow Conjuring. This is ensuring I generate a large number of Sand Warriors during my next upkeep.
After cloning Hazezon, I use sacrifice outlets like Ashnod's Altar, Phyrexian Altar, and Goblin Bombardment to ensure all copies of Hazezon are off the battlefield before the Sand Warriors enter, protecting them from exile.

**Primary Finishers: Sand Warriors**
My primary plan revolves around giving my Sand Warriors haste and boosting their power with cards like Ogre Battledriver and Lovisa Coldeyes. With Torbran, Thane of Red Fell in play, any damage triggered by my Sand Warriors is amplified, making them even more lethal.

Impact Tremors, Terror of the Peaks and Purphoros, God of the Forge punish opponents with direct damage when my creatures enter the battlefield. With Ojer Axonil, Deepest Might or Torbran, Thane of Red Fell on the field, this damage output is further enhanced, making each token’s entry or sacrifice even more impactful.

**Alternate Win Conditions**
Mirror Entity serves as an alternate win condition. By pumping mana into Mirror Entity’s ability, I can turn my tokens into much larger creatures, often closing out the game in one explosive turn.
Backup Finishers: Craterhoof Behemoth and Triumph of the Hordes provide additional paths to victory if my Sand Warrior strategy isn’t enough on its own. These cards allow me to turn a large board state into a game-ending swing.

We are a friendly, casual, multiplayer group that enjoys high-powered good fun. As such, infinite combo are unwelcome, and we are enforcing a homebrewed [Casual Commander Banlist](https://tappedout.net/users/Hexapod/lists/casual-commander-banlist/.com) that is mostly focused on mass land destruction or cards that prevent play, like Winter Orb or Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger. Also we decided not to use Sol Ring because that just frees one spot for everyone in every deck to play something different.

Updates Add

My playgroup has evolved towards a casual but high-powered meta. We have updated our banlist with an aim to encourage variety in play and win conditions. This has brought me to refocus on tokens and to discover new cards I had missed.

The biggest decision is removing Avenger of Zendikar and Rampaging Baloths. I am doing this because they created a subtheme leading me to lean on landfall triggers which is distracting from the main mechanic. This means I am less likely to cast my commander several times, which is what makes me enjoy playing this deck. Besides, this is making for Panharmonicon and Delney, Streetwise Lookout, which I think will greatly contribute to improve how this deck performs.

I am also: - Removing Gaea's Cradle as well as creature tutors, for power level. - Replacing non-creature ramp spells by cost reduction and ways to cheat commander tax. - Adding Mondrak, Glory Dominus - Trying out Defenders of Humanity - Still pondering Strionic Resonator.

The outcome is a deck more centered on Warriors than before, which I like. Looking at possible inclusions based on this, like Bramblewood Paragon. The list feels more on-theme and custom, although still heavy on staples.

This remains a deck with a high potential for explosion. Looking forward to try out this build.
