Clearing out comments and showing some results —April 2, 2014

Thanks so much to TheHiketeia for posting detailed results of this deck at an actual puaper tournament. I have cleared out the comments and added your results as an update to the deck.

Congrats on your success glad I could help. I will be playing this deck next tuesday at a sanctioned pauper tournament now that I am back from vacation.

TheHiketeia

I saw this deck and KNEW I wanted to take it to a local Pauper Tourney, particularly because we were being limited to RtR and Theros blocks for our construction. After some play testing, I found I had occasional problems with lack of mana, and that even though Hopeful Eidolon syngergizes well, the Bestow cost was too high for my play style.

I made a few tweaks to the deck, -2 Martial Glory and -4 Hopeful Eidolon and added another 2 lands and 4 Wojek Halberdiers

I ran the deck in the tourney and here are the results:

2-1 vs Extort deck. I only lost the first match due to getting mana flooded. I won overall and the final match had me swinging with an Akroan Crusader and an Akroan Skyguard for 7/7 and 11/11 respectively at Turn 4 with three hasty soldiers. Ethereal Armor is fabulous.

2-1 vs Selesnya Aggro. His deck was fast, but mine was faster. Again, Ethereal Armor is great, and Pacifism saved me from a Turn 3 creature at 8/8.

2-0 vs Dimir Mill. A terribly constructed Pauper mill. Akroan Crusader and Wojek Halberdiers raced out of the gate to bash the Mill in the face. Both were Turn 5 wins.

2-1 vs Mono-Red Aggro. He was fast, but my spot removal and flying won out in the end.

1-2 vs a NASTY Orzhov. She dropped Contaminated Ground on Turn 1 in two of the games and had some nasty unblockables. She managed to Asphyxiate a number of great creatures and for some reason, my Gods Willing and my (sideboarded in) Rootborn Defenses were nowhere to be found. Alas.

Over all I found this deck a ton of fun to pilot and it dominated the Pauper format due to it's speed and synergy. Akroan Crusader is a great T1 play, and having a flyer in Akroan Skyguard gives a great advantage too. Great build, thanks for helping a newbie out :) +1 a thousand times over.

Hey, Heads up, Stand Firm , in the sideboard, is NOT Standard. I do not know if that matters when playing Pauper, but just incase, there ya go. :)

Interesting deck. Easily +1 because fun, and i want to see this 10$ deck be an awesome foil deck :)

Thanks for the heads up I was just taking cool suggestions and adding them to maybe board for anyone that wants to build the deck.

xTCBxNightmare Thanks for the vote -> So far I have all of the lands save one Guildgate in foil and a good number of the spells/creatures. Should be able to foil the entire deck pretty soon. Then onto tweaking and testing the Populate Slivers Standard Pauper that I am working on as my next one.

Hopeful Eidolon

dsheldo2 I had Hopeful Eidolon in the deck before but it just did not work so I replaced with Nyxborn Shieldmate

I play the non pauper version of this deck, lifelink can be huge when playing against pesky pauper elf decks or pauper delver decks.

March 12, 2014 1:28 a.m.

MadScientist says... #6

This deck is Standard Pauper so delver and elf is not really a concern . Eidolon is a powerful card I have to agree and if I went non standard I would probably put it back in but in this decks current state it actually is no benefit over the nyxborn.

One day I might do a non pauper version, we'll see!

T1 hopeful eidolonT2 Double etheral armor swing 7. gain 7.

That has no benefit?

dsheldo2 Good point maybe I will put them back in and try it for a while with them. I have just never had that opportunity on a draw for that combo.

As nice as that is, an instant removal would pretty much guarantee a loss since losing 1 ethereal armor is bad enough for this deck, let alone 2. Plus you'd really only want to do that combo is you're on the play.

The other disadvantage is that the eidolon is an enchantment too, opens up a whole new world of removal.

Not saying it's a terrible idea, just that enchanting a skyguard is probably going to be more consistent. I guess that's been a running theme here, lots of good ideas, even more hard decisions. I'll put the Hopeful Eidolon in sideboard, could be good against certain match-ups.

Check out my Deck called Molon Labe. Its the same premise but its a mono white and is a spartan theme deck i think you'll enjoy it.

OK, I'm a noob, and I have a question. How does Pacifism on a blocker buff your attacker? Are you referring to the situation where the attacker has Ethereal Armor on it already?

Nice deck. I love fun decks that don't cost a ton. :-)

March 12, 2014 3:43 p.m.

MadScientist says... #12

eHowitzer The Pacifism is an enchantment that you own so if one of your creatures has an ethereal armor on it then the pacifism is going to buff the armor.

Also you cannot have a blocker with pacifism on it once you enchant your opponents creature with it, the creature becomes a dead card on the battlefield for combat.

Love the deck a big +1 from me, maybe a Fencing Ace though? I suppose he isn't pauper

throw some Phalanx Leader in there, it would do work

March 13, 2014 12:45 a.m.

MadScientist says... #15

@808shadow No can do Phalanx leader is an uncommon. This deck is pauper so ONLY commons.

March 13, 2014 12:47 a.m.

MadScientist says... #16

@tiassa all these uncommons and rares that are being suggested has me seriously contemplating a non Pauper aggro hero deck in my near future.

March 13, 2014 12:49 a.m.

This deck is absolutely incredible. I piloted it against several of my own standard decks (all of which cost much more than $9) and your deck came out on top against 2 out of 3 decks. Great work, +1!

This deck is sweet!! I too made a boros pauper, check it out if you'd like: Token Pauper is a Killa. It's a completely different playstyle but still really fun to play. +1 from me!

Love this deck +1 from me.

The only change I would make or at least try out would be swapping out 2 Hopeful Eidolon in place for 2 Daring Skyjek . The battalion trigger from Skyjek along side a double token trigger from Martial Glory on Akroan Crusader . He and his tokens can swing for a whopping 9 points of damage without spells backing them up. Hopeful Eidolon is decent board presence early game and it can act as a bomb with Ethereal Armor but its bestow cost is a little high to fit the curve. I don't think it should be a four of in this deck. IMO life gain should come second in a deck primarily maximizing damage output.

March 14, 2014 5:20 p.m.

Tuanald says... #20

GorehoundABB Martial Glory is able to only trigger Akroan Crusader's effect once. However it may target two different creatures to trigger each creature once.

March 14, 2014 6:53 p.m.

GorehoundABB says... #21

Tuanald Ah thanks for clarifying. The strat still works though even if the trigger goes off once for 8 damage. I dunno where I got 9 from.

I am gonna try to run this at FNM next week. I am trying to work out the sideboard kinks to meet my shops meta which is mostly, Red Green Monsters, Blue White Control the odd Mono color deck and homebrews. I'll still keep it pauper because its more interesting like that. Heres what I got so far.

4 Rootborn Defenses - to combat Supreme Verdict and Aggro

2 Guildscorn Ward - to shut down any multicolor spells. Also applies to creature abilities if they of multicolor origin. All for 1 White? Value.

2 Auramancer - To get back any enchantments we might have lost along the match.

2 Smite - for a cheap combat removal on my opponent's turn during the "declare blockers" stage. Gotta love it for 1 white. Only downside is that it doesn't take out Stormbreath Dragon . Still thinking of a viable strat around killing that thing.

3 Revoke Existence - Kills Gods, Detention Sphere , and Bestowed creatures.

That's 13 cards down. 2 to go.

I am at odds thinking of what to put for the two open slots.

The cards I am considering are Awe for the Guilds , Aerial Maneuver ,Riot Control and Celestial Flare . All for various reasons. Got any suggestions before I make the plunge?

March 14, 2014 11:50 p.m.

EKGwins says... #23

GorehoundABB, since you have 2 slots open and you said that you need something against Stormbreath Dragon go with the Celestial Flare .

March 14, 2014 11:56 p.m.

MadScientist says... #24

@Tuanald Actually this has been confirmed by a top level rules judge from MTG.

The Martial Glory will trigger the Akroan Heroic Twice as the card specifically states that it targets a creature with both effects.

You can target the same creature twice triggering heroic on the creature with both targets.

That makes it even more powerful of a spell in this deck.

GorehoundABB I can't wait to see your results at FNM with this deck. I will post your results in an update if you put them in a comment here.
