I am surprised that you aren't running Appetite for Brains .

@DarthTrevyn

I would love to have Appetite for Brains in here but can't spare the room. That's a very good suggestion though :-)

Nice deck. My friend has a similar one. He runs 2-3ish [killing wave]. It can be insane If he has one [blood artist], or even two stacked. Since both his and your decks can swarm the field with zombies it makes the combo somewhat of a game winning scenario.

@Reido987

It's even more insane with two! Whenever I cast Killing Wave It wins me the game. Especially against token decks which I see a lot of.

I love this deck! I do have one question though. This deck seems like it wants to use Mutilate all the time especially with it being Mono Black. Why is it only in your Sideboard?

August 19, 2012 1:26 a.m.

CrimsonKing says... #11

@mrvoss1

I have it side boarded against creature heavy decks like token decks.

There is a lot of synergy with card:Geralf's Messenger (or any undying creature) and Hex Parasite . Say you sac card:Geralf's Messenger to a Bone Splinters, bringing it back with a +1/+1 COUNTER on it. You then use Hex Parasite 's Ability to remove the counter, thus allowing the card to trigger undying again, the next time it "dies." Because of this, I run maindeck Bloodthrone Vampire s in place of the Highborn Ghoul s in order to sacrifice undying things, pumping it, while still activating the ability of Blood Artist and undying creatures and or creatures that can be played from the graveyard (Gravecrawler anyone?). I would also suggest some Demonlord of Ashmouth s for the same reasons. It provides another sac engine, while adding some more undying effects to the deck. Overrall, awesome deck, definitely something that I'm taking to FNM this week, and under no means must you take this advice (it's just that: advice)

+1 For this awesome deck!

@DamenPulse

Demonlord of Ashmouth is something to consider down the road. Advice is always appreciated my friend!

Run Diregraf Ghoul instead of Highborn Ghoul for sure. Cheaper to play, same P/T, more flexable.

@freelancre

Already have 4 of em :-)

freelancre says... #16

Perhaps Deathrite Shaman then? I know you want to keep it mainly to zombie types, but Highborn Ghoul just isn't up to par with the rest of your possibilities. At the very least, Slitherhead

@freelancre

Sounds like a good idea. I'm going to end up making this into a modern deck at some some point when I get back into it. I miss this deck :-(

You could turn this into a R/B deck and throw in "Rage thrower" for some late game potential since your creatures come back anyhow.

This deck reminds me of my R/B deck although mines has less big creatures. Cool deck thou.

Haha! Love it! I will have to go dig into the modern format a bit deeper! Looks like a blast! :D

An interesting addition people made to Zombies for the modern realm is using Blasting Station in conjunction with Blood Artist .

Surgical Extraction main deck is a bit awkward, but I can see this deck stands no chance against combo decks, so there is that...

Dregscape Zombie is something to consider, in terms of card advantage/reusable threat.

In fact, check out Raphael Levy's take on Zombies in modern, as seen during Pro Tour RTR.

Ok, I'll just randomly throw suggestions of black cards that might come useful.

Gatekeeper of Malakir, Dark Confidant instead of Sign in Blood, Mutavault to always bring back Gravecrawler, Smother, Unmake, Vendetta, Inquisition of Kozilek, Vampire Hexmage, Viscera Seer if you want a sac outlet, Wrench Mind for hand disruption, Oblivion Stone for artifact and enchantment removal, Bojuka Bog or Leyline of the Void for graveyard hate, and if you want to go full aggro, Vampire Lacerator, Sangrophage, Nantuko Shade, Tombstalker if you happen to fill your graveyard quite fast, and Bad Moon for overall pump. IF you want to go more for Control, Beseech the Queen is the best tutor there could be, Tendrils of Corruption adds a lot of tempo, and never forger both greatest creatures for black, Phyrexian Obliterator and Korlash, Heir to Blackblade/Lashwrithe.

Also, Killing Wave works wonders with blood artist, and Abyssal Persecutor with Blasting Station.
