This is my pet and passion project. When I saw Zurgo, I was just getting back into EDH and I was in a bit of a rut, and focusing on building him really helped pull me out of it. I'm always trying to find ways to improve it and the like, but at its core this decks purpose is for me to have fun. I'm in the process of trying to foil it, slowly, but I'd still like to figure it out.

The Idea:

At his heart, Zurgo is a Voltron commander, as I see it. The thing is, hes pretty Voltron-y already. He doesn't need much in order to kill an opponent, he's a 3-turn clock as it is, so the goal is to make sure that he can clear in to swing, and to suddenly boost him up if possible, reducing that 3-turn clock to a 2-turn. Most of the time, that will end up looking something like double-strike + a follow up combat phase.

This deck is not meant for a competitive play environment, but rather for an all-around environment. I'm not opposed to playing cruel or having cruel cards that I can swap in. So I'm open to anything and everything in the hopes that the deck will evolve to something greater than its current form.

The Execution:

You want to get Zurgo out as soon as you can, unless the board state reads hostile. We don't want him to get removed the second he hits the field. Ideally there is some kind of protection for him when he gets onto the field, thanks to our tutors grabbing Lightning Greaves or something. After that, if the mana is available, drop a board wipe and go in swinging. We've got some light control in the hopes of taking down an enemy's field early, and hope that it stays that way.

The creatures that we run are here for their utility and support. Aurelia, the Warleader gets us those extra combat steps while Stonehewer Giant fetches us equipment. Dimir House Guard can be a tutor for any of our 4-mana cost spells, Weathered Wayfarer is ramp, Knight of the White Orchid is ramp, Brutal Hordechief and Ashling, the Extinguisher are both creature control.

We need draw power in order to keep the gas going, so we have Phyrexian Arena and Ob Nixilis Reignited to draw us those cards.

A lot of the card choices have come from their utility that they could have with Zurgo, like Arcbond and Chandra's Ignition. The latter is great for pseudo-boardwiping while boosting Zurgo.

We've got a suite of wide scale and targeted removal and double strike, varying from Vindicate to Boros Charm.

Fun Synergies:

Worldslayer + Zurgo: This is one of our wincons. Zurgo is indestructible on our turn, so we might as well abuse it.

Chandra's Ignition + Zurgo: This will kill every creature without indestructible that has less than Zurgo's power, and then Zurgo will get counters for each creature that dies from this.

Any destory board wipe + Zurgo on our turn.

Assault Suit + Zurgo: This lets our opponents whack each other for us while giving Zurgo semi-permanent indestructible. Toss on some boots to give him protection from targeted exile, and then let him go.
