Yeah, Mystic Remora is an awesome card. I think I tried it out right when I first net-decked the list, but I took it out because my meta was too slow at the time and I was playing a lot of 1v1 matchups. I think you're right about it being worth running now that Vancouver is gone though. I'll for sure test it out again.

Btw, do you think you could link your build? I'd love to take a look at it!

Yeah, of course: Zur and the Kitchen Sink. Would love to hear your advice on it.

I'm also running Land Tax for the same reason: I want 1-cmc cards that make me want to keep my opener. It's... not as good as mystic remora, but ok with scroll rack / chains / armageddon / something like that. That's probably the biggest difference in our builds.

I tried Cataclysm and Stasis but couldn't make them work... maybe they're good in 1v1? Cataclysm was sort of win-more; only good if I was already attacking with Zur and had Necro in play. Although it'd be strong against artifact decks, which my build is a little weak to. Hmm.

Hey there,

Don't you think a combo version of zur like this one is the optimal way to run the deck? http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/ad-nauseam-zur/

That seems to be the general opinion these days. I'd would like to hear your reasoning on why(if?) you feel this version is more competitive.

I'm personally not a fan of Doomsday combo. I feel it requires to many card slots, and costs too much mana to get off for what it does. As for the deck you linked: Skulloth himself has even admitted that he wins the turn AFTER he casts Ad Naus, whereas true Ad Naus combo wins the same turn. It's all personal preference though. The power difference is almost nonexistant.

I've slowly been converting my own list over to devoted Combo-Control, as the death of PP has made Zur mana denial too weak. I may take a second look at Doomsday combo in the future, but like I said, I feel it's not terribly efficient. It does have the added benefit that Sickening Dreams can be removed, since Lab Man works as a win condition for regular Ad Naus combo, but otherwise, there's no upside.

Enchanted Evening and Aura Thief? I use this combo in my Zur deck as an alternate win condition.

That definitely sounds like a fun combo. My qualm is that both pieces are relatively expensive to cast, and neither can be tutored up with Zur. Competitive combos should be cheap and efficient. The two I run (Ad Naus and Helm of Obedience) are both essentially one-card combos thanks to Zur, and both are extremely easy to assemble and cast in a single turn. Both require a minimum of 5 mana to go off in a single turn, whereas Thief + Evening requires 9 mana and a way to sac Thief. That, and Evening is more or less useless by itself, so its inclusion can't even be justified through that means.

Ok, thanks for the justification! I might just add the Helm of Obedience combo you mentioned to my deck.

re: Combo-Control. I agree it's probably a good (the best?) way to go.

re: Armageddon. I cut cataclysm, static orb, stasis, but kept Armageddon... it's sometimes fantastic and it's a two-card combo with Cyclonic Rift. EOT Cyclonic Rift into main-phase Armageddon is usually a concession.

I'm looking to possibly add the Ad Nauseam combo to my Zur deck. I believe it only requires 3/4 slots right? I think that is doable without significantly changing my deck.

I'm less sure about Doomsday as it requires more card slots, you need to run less than optimal cards, and it's easier to disrupt.

How is this deck running with 30 lands? Are you hitting drops and playing Zur on T2/T3?

For reference, you've already commented on it, Zur's Compelling Control.

Yes, Ad Naus only required a few slots. Ideally it's just Naus, Angel's Grace, and either Sickening Dreams or Lab Man. Some lists (like this one) runs Phyrexian Unlife, but it's optional, and not playable if Dreams is the finisher.

I was skeptical of Doomsday at first as well, but I've found the DDay package to be well worth inclusion. While Naus is still the slightly better combo, DDay makes up over 30% of all wins.

It runs fine with 30 lands. I rarely have to mulligan more than once, which is tolerable given multiplayer's one free mulligan clause. Keep in mind that while there are only 30 lands, there are over 45 total mana sources.

I love the deck! What do you do once the Laboratory Maniac has been removed from your deck? It is not uncommon in my meta to see Slaughter Games and other such cards running around.

Pull from Eternity. If something that exiles it facedown like Praetor's Grasp somehow resolves, cry and go to game 2.

I finally bought Zur as a commander and this has been one of my favorite lists I've seen. I like that it can switch between combo and control. Aside from Candelabra (which I'll probably never buy) the rest looks good for being picked up. I can't wait to build him. Ever since I started playing Commander with some spikes out there it's made playing commander much more fun!

@no_body: It's combo protection. If you manage to assemble DDay or Ad Naus while Zur is in play, it's a handy little target to tutor up to help ensure your wincon resolves.

@Erutan9: Thanks! Glad you enjoy it, and good luck with your own build! :)

a cheaper DDay pile would be gush, LED, gitaxian probe, yawgmoth's will, lab maniac. It only requires 4 islands in play (tapped or untapped) + a cantrip to go off.

Hello! I've seen your comments and recomendations on some Zur lists and found that you usually highlight interesting points.

Could you take a look at my Zur list? I'd like to have your opinion on it = ]

Dark Confidant over Lunar Force and Preordain over Sleight of Hand. In mana base I prefer Mana Confluence over Gemstone Caverns and City of Brass over Godless Shrine. With these changes I have to say, this is the best Zur deck. The best of Skuloth's Ad Nauseam Doomsday Zur with Aetherflux Reservoir included. Great work and thank you for inspiration!
