A scary thought ...

That may also make a good movie ...
What if ...
that ...
the internet ...
was HAUNTED!?
was POSSESSED by EVIL SPIRITS!?
What would happen? How would the world cope? What would it mean to the structure of the internet and every program and physical object that can access the internet?
It's a scary thought ... really scary.

Like literally, a spirit. Not a program, but a spirit.

A spirit possessing the internet will have complete and utter control of it, and programmers wouldn't be able to do anything about it, because the spirit itself is not a program. As a consequence of this, the spirit would be able to control any electronic that is connected to the internet in some way, due to the spirit having free roam.

In other words, we would have to exorcise every single thing that connects to the internet and all its servers.

Oh no! It can waste my money by constantly printing pages... In color!
(Lol, okay, on a somewhat more serious note)
Should something be able to possess electronics that are connected to the internet, I would rant about the physical capabilities it would need in order to intercept electrical messages, interpret them, and transmit messages of its own or else devices would just continue functioning normally or end up with connection errors.
If you are saying the spirit has greater power than that and can physically move peripheral devices connected to internet equipped electronics (say, a printer or camera) then there would be no need for the spirit to remain confined to the computer system.
Sorry to bash your horror story, but you were straying into an area that I have some experience in. (Computers and networking, not ghosts)

Evil spirits? Ah, so that's why all those dirty websites keep popping up on my browser. Not my fault at all.
totally.

And how those exorcisms would apply will change from area to area to. For Christianity, the cross would have to be placed on every page on the internet in a program that makes so it that it is always visible at all times (not hard to do), and be embedded into every electronic. Holy water would be used in the creation of electronics as well. You would then have sound programs of priests reciting specific parts of the bible being played on every page.
Roman Catholicism would have a hard time validating a reason to grant exorcism to programs and electronics considering the majority of the population is atheist. It wouldn't be until a higher member of the Roman Catholic church actually takes the gravity of the situation into account before granting mass exorcisms to the public. The main reason for this is the Roman Catholic church's general rule of only granting exorcisms to other religious people, or until a member of the catholic church agrees to put in the request themselves.
For Hinduism, mantra is mainly used, but techniques differ from variation to variation. In the Vaishnava variation, the 3rd, 7th and 8th chapter of Bhagavad Gita would have to be presented. Kirtan mantras and conch blowing for sound, water from holy rivers in creation, and holy pictures of dieties will also be used.
Islamic exorcism would once again have electronics made in holy water, and sound files present for the scriptures of specific verses from the Quran. In other cases, the adhan/"ah-zan" would also be read.
I'm not really well versed in Judaism ... so can't really say what will be used in the exorcisms beyond the reciting of Psalm 91 and the blowing of a Shofar.
For some reason Buddhism and Shinto forms of exorcism aren't really present in any article I can find, which is odd. Buddhism would include symbols of the Darmachakra and some object I can't remember the name for would be part of the structure of larger electronics. I looks sort of like a hand-held hedron, but stretched out from top and bottom. The Buddhist beads would also be embedded into electronics as well. In Shinto it is called purification, and not exorcism. It would be using depictions of the kami in their numerous natural forms. In particular, fallen branches of the holy kami trees would be used in the building of electronics. These would either be in the directly in the structure, or part of an accessory, probably formed as a Haraegushi. Salt would also be used. The Torii would be present generally in the beginning of each page and used as a border for many things.
The difficulty of this would be mainly the general public and hundreds of companies coming to turns with what they have to do to prevent the possession of the internet. As I hardly see Microsoft Windows becoming a Christian program, or Sony delving into Buddhism and Shinto.

Femme_Fatale: Orthodox Jew, here.
Judaism's version of exorcism is a bit different than other cultures, although we are the ones that 'invented' the idea, you could say. The methods are much more freeform, and lack a specific ritual. More of a 'power of g-d compels you' kinda thing. Except with lest red-faced preachers and spittle.

So there wouldn't just be one way to do it? That's a way to incite a bit of chaos.

I know how electronics and programming work weisemanjohn, I also know quite a bit on spirits and ghosts. Think about poltergeists. They have no physical form but can move objects around with just their will. A ghost or spirit is mainly just the energy of grudges, regrets and negative feelings that are released upon the death of an individual. Or at least, that is how I define it scientifically. I generally ignore how spirits are presented in media, and just try and stick with what I know.
If we consider that spirits are just energy that is directed, then we take into account the ability to manipulate physical objects. It also takes into account possession, as the energy overrides whatever currently exists in whatever they have possessed. So in terms of scientific representation of a spirit in the internet directly, it would be like a code that just moves through code and is able to change code directly how it sees fit. The only way to deny this code would be through exorcism directly in the code, which is generally suggested in the post I showed to GoldGhost012 on the methods of exorcising the internet and electronics. However you must also consider the gravity of this spirit, as powerful spirits can literally just erase methods of exorcism. For example, if you had a Haraegushi accessory on your electronic that is connecting to the internet, the spirit could just set the Haraegushi on fire. Scriptures and symbols embedded into the electronic would be harder to remove, but still possible to do.

Um. This is actually a movie. It's called White Noise I think. It travels through the internet and haunts/kills people.

Eh, White Noise isn't about the internet, but about the communication between the living and the dead through TV and radio static.

Yeah I realized wrong movie title. I'll have to find it. In the movie I'm thinking of they could block the spirits with this red duct tape or something. Can't remember the name for the life of me though.

Femme_Fatale says... #22
Red duct tape? Blah, I can tell it wouldn't be a good one. Red duct tape has no humanistic ideologies of hope, well-being, all-that-is-good etc etc to it, so it can't be used as exorcism material.

If that were true, I'd bust out a cyber Ouija board and find out it's life. I'd like to assume that it has SOME humanity left in it.

missed page 2. Oh the movie is complete garbage. But it fits the theme.

In what way does this evil spirit withing the internet manifest itself? This could be interpreted as any number of malicious programs that already litter the internet with the intent to harm personal data, waste resources, and expose private information.
