AMA - Spootyone

The Blind Eternities forum

Posted on May 6, 2015, 2:05 p.m. by Spootyone

Hello peeps!

I've been seeing a lot of AMA's lately and seeing as I have the day off today and I'm pretty bored I thought "what the hell, I'll do one."

So, as some of you may already be aware, I am Spootyone. I try to participate in forums and in deck help as much as I can. My love of the game led me to creating the article series Showdown, which is currently on hiatus, unfortunately. I've created a couple "successful" decks through the site, as well. These are probably the most likely ways you would know of me. Unless, of course, you happened to see me on Cockatrice!

So, what's on your mind?

Hey Spootyone! Here's my question... Am I the only one who actually liked RTR-Theros standard? Because I miss my old Esper list.

What's your favorite format?

What's your favorite deck?

Why?

I think I would certainly consider that to be an unhealthy format. While it certainly wasnt as back breaking as some in the past, its wasnt great. Because it centered around just a handful of cards (namely rev, verdict, spectre, etc), creative playstyles were greatly hindered. That said, I do greatly miss RTR block.

Are you still experimenting with rogue Standard brews, or are you thinking of branching out into other formats?

May 6, 2015 2:54 p.m.

Spootyone says... #6

My favorite format would have to be standard for constructed and sealed for limited. Unlike many, i actually prefer to be given a small number of cards to work with so that I have to McGuyver my way out of the situation. Breaking open a stale format or finding victory with a pile of garbage cards is how I prefer to play this game!

My favorite deck...thats a hard one. I think it's safe to say it would be a primarily GW brew of some sort. Ill go with old Conclave GW midrange deck that had Archangel of Thune, Voice of Resurgence, Advent of the Wurm, Loxodon Smiter, etc in it. Nothing like good value creatures.

I think there are too many AMAs going around.

can we try to limit these to when something actually happens instead of "why not"?

anyhow,

do you love me?

have you heard of me?

are you sure of your answers to the first 2?

how old are you?

how old do you think I am?

Vault: Yes and yes. While I still don't really play anything beyond standard I have been following Modern a lot more and could see myself casually playing it at some point in the future.

Love her...I hardly know her!

I have seen you around here quite a bit though. Did you have an older name or have you always been Derplingsupreme?

I'm about 69% sure.

I'm 23 years old, and given the average age I assume everyone is on here.....let's go with an even 20? shrugs

Lol sorry. I swore that I saw you call yourself female at some point so that's how I've assumed up until now. Ah, the anonymity of the internet....

What's your opinion on Temur in Standard right now, Spooty?

What are you most hoping for when rotation occurs?

May 6, 2015 3:49 p.m.

Spootyone says... #13

I gone through my trials (by fire) with Temur in standard and I think that it ultimately has settled into being an archetype that will never be T1, but will always easily be T2.

Temur asks you "why are you splashing blue in your aggro/midrange deck?" Usually the answer is Savage Knuckleblade, counterspells, or something like Sarkhan Unbroken. These cards are all really good cards, but the problem is that knucks makes your mana so difficult that you end up with a deck that is pretty hit or miss. Sarkhan is fine for the mana, but the 5 mana slot is already pretty heavy with cards like Whisperwood Elemental, Stormbreath Dragon, Nissa, Worldwaker, Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker, etc.

As for rotation, I'm hoping to get to brew a bit again. The entire meta may shift simply based on the mana fixing and that may make it more reasonable to run decks like GW without feeling dumb for not splashing cards like Dragonlord Ojutai or Siege Rhino. I've never been a fan of 3 color decks. I much prefer the 2-color variety.

Where are you on the Kinsey scale?

Don't answer if that makes you uncomfortable. I'm a pretty solid five though, so no judgements.

What is your worst habit when it comes to playing a game of MtG?

May 6, 2015 5:11 p.m.

Spootyone says... #16

FinchFalcon: I think I'd go with a 1 on that scale. I think it's pretty hard for someone to suggest they're entirely 0 or 6, but to each their own. No judging here.

fluffybunnypants

My worst habit when playing MTG is probably getting too easily tilted by random chance. It's something that I've actually been trying very hard to overcome recently and it's also the very reason I became burnt out on the game. I want to play more, though. So I've been trying to change my point of view and come to the realization that I'm not the only one it's happening to, it's perfectly normal, and even pros can have a 60% win percentage.

So to answer your question, I guess I have a tendency to become overtly negative about the outcome of games when I should be calm and look to them as learning experiences. :)

I get that. Last Friday I played RDW and went 0-3, drop. I drive about 35 minutes to get to my preferred LGS. I felt very salty. Questions like "Is this even worth it?" or "Why try so hard when it all just comes down to chance?" popped into my head.

Ultimately I keep coming back. I love the game. I just have to learn to accept that some days, you are doomed to draw poorly while your opponents draw well. That's part of the game.

I have to try to curb my disappointment with realism. Furthermore, I have to focus on enjoying the game for its own sake, as opposed to only enjoying it when I win. I can't assess the fun factor of my MTG hobby based solely on the amount of prize support I take home each week.

That said, I really hate losing when I know I misplayed. I get super frustrated at myself if I lose because I forgot a trigger or something. And I still get annoyed about chance tilts. I mean, all that gas to drive out to FNM to go 0-3 leaves one with a sour impression of the game.

JakeHarlow: My situation was basically the exact same as yours. Misery loves company haha. I'm sure that Zendikar will get me back into the game. I've been wanting that return since I first learned about Zendikar, so choosing not to be a part of it would be a disservice to my psyche lol.

derp you have no right to say that there are too many ama shits goung around. not too long ago you did the same

Spootyone says... #21

Sure, but it's not a super awesome story lol.

Have any of you watched or remember the TV cartoon "The Angry Beavers"? I used to love that show. In that show, they call things "spooty" instead of "crappy" or "shitty." Therefore, I am "the crappy one" xD Not the best title to have but well...it stuck like a bad nickname.

And for the record, I tried to create a new handle to fit my love for bass guitar by making one called "4stringf3nd3r", but that just didnt roll off the tongue the same.

How do you feel we can stop Famine in Africa.

Spootyone says... #26

I believe the fox is trying to communicate to us that we're all equals and that we should respect each other for who we are and that he really just wants happiness. And food.

Africa is a tough situation, but I'm pretty sure if we just manufactured an Island or two there that we could send them Counterspell.
