So I just started the game and so far have been excelling. I'm level 11 and have been playing some PvP and coming out even every game, just playing it careful pretty much. Now I'm just looking for a character to settle into. I play with my friends and we've got positions set out and I cover top. I'm playing Shyvana but want to play someone else though. The team so far however is: ADC - Draven, Support - Blitzcrank, Mid - Ahri, Jungle - Vi/Shack (depends on his mood lol) and then me. I'm thinking about playing I reliable top. Any other suggestions?

Irelia, Jarvan IV, and Wukong are beasts at top. Pantheon is another good one.

Get used to playing different champs. A team composed of people who specialize exclusively in one or two champs is destined to fail. Once you get to drafts, the chances of you securing the champs you really want drops pretty sharply. Also, a large part of the game is based on counter picking and knowing when a champ is and isn't viable. For example, you wouldn't pick a Draven ADC into a Morgana or Leona or Nami support because the Spinning Axes tell the enemy exactly where to throw their CC to lock you up.
As for viable top laners, the current Challenger meta includes Maokai, Rumble, Gnar, Jax, Irelia, Lissandra, and Lulu.

Jarvan IV is more common as a jungler, but he can top. Nasus is really strong if you're good at CSing.

My personal favorite for top is Irelia since her kit is similar to a bruiser/assassin hybrid. Granted I like her because of the assassin part since I usually play assassins at mid.
For bruisers/duelists, Jax and Pantheon are up there. Both are somewhat tanky while still dealing a ton of damage.
Are you wanting to go top as a bruiser or tank?

Cho'Gath is a beast and extremely easy to play. He's an easy mid, jungle, and top. Support too once you can comfortably land his Q.
Although I haven't played him for a while, Yorick is insane. He's far more than that guy who shows up and goes "BOOGA BOOGA" and runs away.

What Epoch said.
However the meta is always changing. People want to counter Maokai, so they start choosing X champion. X champion becomes super popular and is now the flavor of the month. To counter X champion, people start playing Y champion top, so on and so forth.
I always try to stay a bit ahead of the meta, and it always seems that the LCS copies me. I was playing Gragas jungle before the LCS picked it up and got it nerfed to the ground. Leona jungle? Good Game University must have watched my games. I played Fizz top since he was introduced. I have thought Lissandra to be a better top than mid since her release. I started seriously playing Ali top about 4 months before his mana cost buffs. I played Wu jungle before it was cool.
The point is that lots of champions, outside of what is meta, can play top... or any role. It is really just a matter of looking at a champion and asking what they do well and what they do not do so well. If they do well against the meta top laners and have kits that you can take top, then there is not much a reason to not pick them up and try them out.
Some of my favorite tops are: Malphite, Diana, Pantheon, Morde-huehue, Volibear, and Vlad. But again just because you like them and are good with them, does not mean you should pick them into every situation. You have to read what your team needs out of a top laner, and what your opponents are going to do in team fights, and also visualize how the lane is going to go. For example, if you want to play Pantheon, but the enemy top picks Maokai or Garen... I would not pick Pantheon. But if they pick Riven? Lolgg. Knowing your match ups is super important.

Honestly, find the champion you LOVE playing. You don't need to master 2 for each role, or even 1 for each role. Just know your champion you love to play. You'll excel at that champion, and carry yourself that way. When you're in a low tier ranks, playing "the best" champion vs playing your favorite/best champion will actually lose you more games. Learn to not care too much or get caught up in chat in general. Pings are good enough most of the time. Chatting will almost always just lead to salty bad annoyed teammate (or yourself). Contrast to popular belief, you can and will get forced into a position but you don't need to play a specific champion for it. If you want to play leblanc who you know you're good at instead of an adc you know you're bad at, bot lane then do it. You're much more likely to do well (just make sure you mute your team until you start stomping some fools).

I think the distinction needs to be made that we aren't inviting OP to play champs he's (or she's) bad at. We're inviting him to expand his champion pool so he can more effectively fulfill his role in the team.
That said, you do make a good point about lower tiers. It's possible to play unusual or mismatched team comps with high success if you know what you're doing and what your limitations are.

The champion pool will honestly change often. The best champions are subject to change weekly if not monthly. Hecarim is seeing more play in the top lane strangely, Gnar is great once you get the hang of him and the timing on his turning, Lissandra is a good choice if you want an AD mid like Ezreal. Though it seems that you need a tank(y) champ for your team. Maokai, Gnar, Volibear, Shen, and other offtanks that can have fairly versatile builds can all work well. Hell, I've been making Rammus top work extremely well when I know who their top laner is. Volibear is a great champ to play top, he's fairly straight forward to play and building hp builds you damage.

Thanks a lot of advice guys!! The team so far has about 2-3 champions they can each play. I can play Hecarim jungle, Karma Mid/bot Support and Shyvana Top. I just want a new top lane champion because I don't like Shyvana much. So I decided instead of tanky champion I wanted to go bruiser and played a game against someone playing I reliable and got WRECKED. Then I looked game play videos and watched Legend of Gamer on YouTube and I just realized that I wanted her or Fiora but I reliable was less IP so she's the choice. After I need anew ADC. Idk who I want for that.

Lolpro is a good site to look at champions, their playstyles, tips to play/build them, runes/masteries etc. And each article is written by a pro player. Some great offtank/bruiser champions are Gnar, Jarvan, Fizz, Darius, Garen, Jayce, Jax, Renekton, Nasus, Sion, Trundle, Voli, Wukong, Hecarim.
I'd recommend Darius, Garen, Volibear, Wukong, Renekton, Nasus, Sion based on ease of picking them up and playing them fairly well.
And Fizz, Gnar, Renekton, Sion, Jax for strong champions to pick in the current meta.
I'm not an ADC player myself so I can't make any strong recommendations. Draven is a fun pick up, and Twitch has been my all time favorite.

Jax has been a consideration for a while now. He and his abilities have always interested me and he's more tanky too isn't he? I'm also currently considering Vladimir Mid. Good choice?

Vlad is usually a top laner where he can actually abuse the fact that he is ranged. Mid, he usually just gets outpoked. Though Vlad mid is pretty okay vs some popular mid picks like Zed since you can pool to pretty much negate his ult. As far as Jax goes, he is kind of artificially tankier than some top champs -- especially Fiora (for a comparison that you named) in that he has a dodge and his ult gives him armor based off his AD and magic resist based off his AP. So he doesn't get as thick as say Volibear or Sion or Maokai or Shen. But he would be thicker than something like Fiora or Teemo or Lissandra. He is considered a hyper carry though. If a Jax gets to late game, it spells a lot of trouble for the other team.
As far as ADCs go, the ones that you will see time and time again are Tristana, Lucian, Corki, Jinx, Caitlyn. Those are the ones that I would say are flavor of the month most of the time. But you will see a spattering of Koggles, Graves (current), Vayne, Ezreal, and Varus. Draven is also pretty decent, but he gets countered pretty good by Leona, Thresh, and Blitzcrank. I also really like Kalista as she generates a lot of objective control. Rend OP.

My general rule is that I don't buy anyone over 1350IP unless I've tried them when they're free first. There have been exceptions of course- my first bought champion was Thresh because I liked that he was ranged but also relatively tanky (given I play him ADC more than support).
Feel free to add me as well, my summoner name is the same as it is here. Not really applicable to League, but its become my go to username for hobby-related things.

Right now I'm trying out Rengar and I wanna try Nidalee and Kalista also. I tried Elise and didn't like her

ducttapedeckbox says... #24
Nidalee is a lot of fun, once you get a feel for her abilities she becomes extremely strong. Tough to learn the timing though, with two sets of abilities.
February 25, 2015 1:24 p.m.
Epochalyptik says... #25
Elise and Nidalee are inherently complicated because they have two forms and six normal abilities. Don't be discouraged if you can't get the hang of them. I suggest working on your mechanical ability first, then learning more complicated champions as your sense of timing and management of opportunities improve.
Are you dedicated top, or are you experimenting with roles? Kalista is not really a top laner; she's an AD carry.

My advice is if you plan on playing in Ranked after hitting level 30, get all the champions you can and practice them. One should know how to play each role with at least some degree of skill, and you should have 2-3 champions for each role that you know the best. As for toplaners, Garen is easy to learn, as he just builds tanky and has insane life regeneration with his passive. Gnar's a good counter for enemies with melee range, as he can poke with his boomerang and deny them farm. He also has good initiate and kiting, but is difficult to master, due to his passive in changing to Mega Gnar. Nasus is also good if you learn how to farm effectively with your Q. Last hits are crucial on him.
If you really wanted, though, you could go Teemo. Just existing as him is an advantage in his own. He blinds melee champions so they can't farm well, makes them play cautiously, and when they make a mistake, capitalizes and gets the kill 95% of the time. Also poison.
